The OG trilogy (and even ODST and Reach to some extent) had a sense of awe and uniqueness to them. Everything from the music to the art direction reinforced your immersion in a wondrous world. The storyline revolved around magnaminous events and ancient wars, and the characters were likeable (if somewhat one dimensional) heroes. The multiplayer was challenging but not too fast and never gimmicky.
Then Halo 4 came out and it's just Call of Duty+Transformers+GI Joe in space. The enemies make wubstep sounds and the art design is heavy and industrial and the characters are always shouting at each other like it's some gritty primetime TV drama. The gameplay is CoD with SPARTANS, you sprint everywhere and whoever has the best twitch reflexes wins. It's not an awful game but it doesn't feel like Halo at all. It's generic as fuck, the spectacle is cranked up to 11 but the uniqueness is gone.
As someone who's been playing Halo since CE came out I didn't like sharp turn Halo 4 took. I haven't played 5 but it seems to have moved further in that direction.
