The Emperor being hot shit was hammered home back in ESB, it has nothing to do with Vader being weak. it's all about show don't tell.

Vader may have been telling us that the Emperor was too powerful to challenge, but the sheer deference he displays also shows us the force of his belief far better than an hours worth of exposition and CGI fight scenes ever could.

Did anyone else get the feeling from the original trilogy that Sith didn't normally use lightsabers?

Palpatine called Vaders saber basically a stupid Jedi weapon.

To me that really seemed to push the idea that the Sith didn't use Lightsabers, Vader only had his because he was a fallen Jedi and kept his weapon of choice.

Then the expanded universe and prequels came and all Sith had them and even Palpatine had one.
