In UT, it kinda tries to do the opposite of saying "it's just a game", right? Whenever you try to do something because "it's just a game", it basically swipes that power from you to some extent. There are choices you can't completely run away from without tampering with the game files directly.
Besides that, I also think the game plays out everything completely straight. It's not meant to be deep or philosophical or anything, and anyone who says otherwise probably is just taking the piss.
