The main problem is the perception of female leads in games. A woman lead can't JUST be a woman lead. She has to be a badass or a sterling representation of the gender, or else the devs are sexist. She's not allowed to be put through the same psychological torture as male characters, she's not allowed to be injured bodily to the extent of male characters. And she's not allowed to just be a player avatar, or else the devs just wrote a man doing man things (like shooting guns and jumping around) and put a woman's skin on it.
Its kind of sad that, in a genre where historically the writing has been memorable but not high-grade, both sides of the coin will usually only accept a woman that is handled extremely well, rather than accepting that sometimes a character is just a character and doesn't have to come flying fresh hot out of the same old mold we've come to expect
