>their payload is limitedSo? That's like asking why America bothered building the stealth fighter when a conventional strike fighter can carry more bombs. The answer is that it can go places and strike at targets that a conventional fighter cannot. Even then, I don't see why a Mech's payload would be much more limited than a tank's, and no one says you can't send a squad of them.
