It could have been so much better if they'd included a part about how the collectors base had the schematics for the crucible - perhaps some kidnapped guy gets a transmission through to Cerberus, perhaps Legion learns about it somehow and joins the crew at the start of the game...
That would give Shepard some real motivation to take out the collectors and it would explain how they got the plans in ME3, instead of that weak "oh, we coincidentally found them somewhere!" excuse.
