1. Collecting rings is fun and satisfying (so you can survive when getting hit, get higher score(chance of getting a continue), building up to a getting a new life at 100 rings, chance of having enough rings to enter special stage, you always feel like you are making progress towards a goal)
2. Holding onto rings without a shield creates tention for the player as they carefully navaigate the level to the goal ring without getting hit and staying engaged constantly because of it
3. And getting a shield or invincibility is super satifsying because of it, you can run for a bit without worrying
4. Multiple pathways makes every playthough unique and different so you don't know what to expect (you can't predict what pathways you will feel like going to or will actually get to)when you are playing at all times
5. You are rewarded with spectical (going fast) for skillful play, via rolling at the right time, fast reaction time when enemies appear etc
6. The super difficult final bosses creates a tention for the player through the whole game as they don't know how well they will do, and beacuse of that will find collecting lives, rings, continues very satisfying especially in the early game, all because of no save feature
7. Has the best pacing out of any of the classic games, the player just goes from stage to stage to stage in very quick succession that is very rarely bogged down with padding (metropilis act 3, sky chase fuck u), making the player feel rewarded at nearly all the times
8. the stages have actual variation with unique assets unlike mario, so you are constantly adapting your playstyle to suit the stage in question
