I've been playing Mass Effect 1 on the PC for the first time these past couple days. And the more I play it the more I realize that, while incredibly engrossing and entertaining, it's still a deeply, deeply flawed game.
It took two dozen infuriating romps on the same planet surface, while surveying the same pile of Thorium, Uranium or what-have-you to make me realize that perhaps some of the streamlining done in the later games in the series might not have been a bad thing at all. At the same time, it still galls me that some of these features might have been improved as opposed to completely removed.
I would've been all for returning to planet surfaces with the physics-defying Mako (seriously, that thing can climb fucking 90 degree inclines, what the fuck.) if it wasn't such listless and uninspired affair.
The inventory system was also a major pain in the ass in the first game, with the 150 item limit and practically no sorting tools I think I spent more time in the inventory trying to figure out which item was actually worth keeping, than fraternizing with my alien bros ("Wrex." "Shepard.") and listening to Shepard ask a question with the same stupid tone of voice. ("What can you tell me about XYZ?")
Regardless, I'm still having a fair amount of fun. The game looks a lot UGLIER than I remember, but I guess that makes sense considering Mass Effect first came out 8 years ago in 2007.
But I digress. Perhaps then it's time to play Mass Effect 2 with a new perspective, since it's supposed to have better gameplay. Who knows, I might even play 3 at this rate.
Liara is best girl, by the way. Taliposters pls go and stay go.
