I know I'm really late on this but please bear with me. I like isometric rpgs a lot; I love Fallout, Planescape, Arcanum, etc. I'm playing a lot of Age of Decadence right now and really digging that too. Is Pillars of Eternity worth getting? Does it hold a flame up to the classics?

It's not that good honestly. I see praise everywhere yet if you dig deeper many admit the story is just ok and the combat sucks. That's already two components of what should be in a rpg.

What does get praised often is the so called 'world building' which I think is also shit because they have npcs everywhere with stories that do not relate at all to the world. (these npcs were backer written stories i heard) and the npcs that don't do this don't have much to tell and are rare.

There's almost nothing good about this game,
the story is shit, the combat is shit, the mechanics are meh, you get a stupid castle to build, characters you meet are blank as shit. It only gets nostalgia points, it ran Obsidian to the ground imo.

If you really like RTWP it's worth playing I'd wager but I was left disappointed by it. Didn't have that same wit and liveliness to the dialogue as their other games. Doesn't help the world is so painfully not-DnD.

Divinity is the only cRPG that got gameplay right. Age of Decadence gets an honorable mention for it's choices and consequences but its gameplay was also meh. Now if only Larian and Iron Tower can team up.

a game doesn't have to be exceptional to be good. I never said it is the savior of crpg's or a goty contender. I just refuse to see how the game is shit when games like ride to hell retribution, obscure 2 or warlords of dreanor exist.

It's fucking awesome, OP. Better than Baldur's Gate 1, Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 (Not counting Mask of the Betrayer) and all of Icewind Dale.

It's also the best modern CRPG, better than every Shadowrun, Wasteland 2 and Divinity: Original Sin

I haven't played Age of Decadence yet, though. Maybe that game is better.

However, you'll need to go into it understanding that it's not an RPG. It's a tactical combat game.

Seriously, there's an insanely disproportionate amount of combat in this game. If you're not fighting, you're moving across the map to get to the next fight.

At the very least, the combat is good. It would be better if it wasn't RTwP garbage, but it's still good.

Speaking as someone who really enjoyed isometric RPGs and continue to replay them to this day, no.

Pillars of Eternity was mediocre.

Its story didn't draw me in. It has no memorable characters. It has some novel mechanics, I suppose, but overall it is a forgettable game that I wish I hadn't wasted my time on.

I tried it, I really did, the plot was getting good but I just couldn't fucking stand the fighting mechanics. I restarted like 8 times thinking maybe I was doing something wrong, but it has always been the same. The only strategy is to pick as many companions as you can.

It's okay. Writing is a bit lacking by Obsidian's standards (with a couple of notable exceptions), but gameplay and especially combat is better than usual (which means bearable most of the time and mildly fun at best). It's good value for the Steam sale price (not so much for the normal price), so if you're thinking about getting it, I'd say go for it now.

I played on hard, and even if you somehow think you can't just tank n spank everything, the game recycles encoutners like crazy
