It's tedious.
Chrono Trigger is to the point, solid, and well framed. From start to finish, you're looking at 20 hours. During that twenty hours EVERYTHING you do is related to the main plot in some way.
Chrono Cross is 60 hours longer than it needs to be, and has 60 more characters than what is necessary. It came out during an age where everyone was looking at Final Fantasy 6 like the new golden child. Everyone needs a million characters. The longer we make it the better it is. That is simply not the case.
One of the reasons Chrono Trigger was fantastic is that it threw away a lot of the faults that was plaguing the RPG genre. You never faced a boss you had to grind for. You never NEEDED to grind once in Chrono Trigger. You could, but you didn't need to. It was well paced, and it was concise.
Chrono Cross abandons those principles. I'm not saying CC is a bad game, it's not. It's a lot better than most RPGs. But as a successor? It fell extremely short. It would have done better as its own title and its own story. But seeing as how it is tied to a masterpiece it will be shunned due to its outright betrayal of the principles that made the first so spectacular.
