What are some Silent Hill games that aren't Silent Hill?

Pic related, it's a free HL1 mod called Cry of Fear. Even though it's a FPS, ammo and medicine are really scarce.

Lone Survivor. Pretty much a 2D Silent Hill. The music/sound effects and the grungy urban setting are super reminiscent of Silent Hill.

Cry of fear did remind me of Silent Hill in a lot of ways and I did enjoy it, but it's a lot more dependent on jump scares than a Silent Hill game.

Is Cry of Fear any good? I played AoM and loved it, but the cheap jumpscare at the beginning really turned me off when I tried CoF.

If you liked CoF, you definitely need to try out the same author's older HL1 horror mod, the Afraid Of Monsters: Director's Cut version.

Pretty much the same style and mood too, just with less extreme visual and gameplay overhaul. Definitely spookier than CoF though.

Other horror titles I could easily recommend:

-Scratches (PC)
-Fatal Frame -games (PS2, Wii)
-Penumbra: Overture & Black Plague (PC)
-Condemned: Criminal Origins (PC, PS3/360)
-Resident Evil REMAKE (GC, Wii, PC/PS3/360)
-Underhell: Chapter 1 (PC, Source mod)

Honorable mentions: STALKER trilogy, , FEAR 1 + Expansions.

Cry of Fear has a pretty good atmosphere and some cool levels, but it's pretty much jump scares all the way through. If you're okay with that, it's worth playing.

The game's no more jumpscare-y than AoM or any old RESI game. A good majority of its horror is atmospheric and creepy shit happening.

I'm not sure why everyone is saying Cry of Fear is all jump scares. I'm on chapter 4 and the only real jumpscare I've seen is the one at the beginning. There's a lot of enemies waiting right around corners, and sometimes an enemy will break down a door, but I don't really think of those as jumpscares.

I kind of like them because they make a nice sort of Roullette if you've got no idea how good any of them are going in. You can wind up playing an overlooked gem like Darkseed 1, or you could wind up playing one of the worst games of all time like Darkseed 2.

2BF played a game called Forgotten Memories. It might be an iPad/mobile exclusive but it seemed REALLY similar to SH in terms of gameplay (puzzles were pretty weak though) as well as storytelling methods.

a fan-made tribute mod for HL2. It's mostly just roaming some familiar and some all new places in SH, solving puzzles and shit.

It certainly is.
They did some extreme overhauling to the code to allow stuff like normal-maps, actually dynamic (HL2-style) flashlight, water shaders, etc.

Plus the game has a bit RE-style limited inventory, dual wielding, and save-spots. You also actually lose the remaining ammo of the magazine if you reload the gun before it's empty.

That first segment is pretty unlike the rest of the game. I can understand why the jumpscare right at the start might give you a bad first impression, but I'm about halfway through and there hasn't been another cheap jumpscare like that.

I could recommend doing so.
I replayed this for the first time since 2012 early this spring, and it was still brick-shitting as ever.

The attention to detail is pretty amazing in the maps. The fact that it's also set to Stockholm and its real-life places kinda makes it unique. Plus the maps look very much like the generic neighborhoods of my own country, only added to the appeal, and horror.

But both CoF and AoM:DC really became big NOPE experiences when I got to the woods.

Pathologic is a bit like STALKER crossed with Silent Hill crossed with an old WRPG. Even has the whole fog gimmick, fairly in-depth survival aspects. Light on horror, much more about the mood and setting.
