You can also chain attacks with different effects like drain HP, drain MP, or do extra damage by timing button presses correctly after the initial attack. These chains can go as long as you can keep getting the timing correct.
The depth and challenge comes from the risk system, which builds as you attack and chain attacks. This increases healing abilities and critical hits, but also lowers your ability to hit.
There is also the affinity system which determines resistances and damage output that is important if you want to survive. This is tied to all the different weapons and armor. Buffs and debuffs are also pretty important.
It's a bit complex, but really cool when you get the hang of it.
