Never played Quake Wars.

The difference is you picked a character/class with a preset loadout, with minor variations, ie soldier with machine gun or rocket launcher, and pushed/defended objectives.

Being in beta, I'd say it's a lot more complex actually. In TF2, you have X number of classes to deal with who have Y number of variables.

Though it's the same for OW, the numbers of classes if far higher (and remains constant) and the variables as well; in fact, you could say there is a Z variable involved due to compositions of teams + map. Far more complex than TF2.

No, it's depth when you decide to use X class on Z map because X has Y ability. Then you have counter picks, just like in Dota.

Blizzard isn't going care-beary with this one. That's what Hearthstone is for. Then you have Heroes. OW is for their true competitive crowd.

I actually purchased a few Halo 1 PC CDs for myself and a few friends so we can have some sniper fun in Blood Gulch. But it still felt slow in comparison with UT.
