Not always though. Take Fallout for example, you can pretty much just skip the first two games.

Play 1 and 2. If you need to have more then you can play 3 I guess. Skip the reboot, it's not even in any way similar to the first two/three and is an awful game in its own right.

Use TFix for Thief 1 and Tafferpatcher for Thief 2. They include the NewDark patch that fixes all compatibility issues on modern systems.

Start with Thief Gold and download tfix, then play The Metal Age, you'll need tafferpatcher for that one.
