The reality of the situation is that the character you create and control is your avatar, a manifestation of your will and identity into that world. The connection between you and the game.
When you willingly choose to be identified as a woman in that fictional world, to be addressed and treated as one, it just says something about you, ya know.
Of course I'm not gonna claim that you and literally everyone is self-inserting, but a vast majority do, and even if you don't realize it, you're still tying your identity with that character.
