Is portable gaming dead?

Did smartphones kill it by filling the market with cheap garbage?

I don't understand why despite the amazing levels of technology we've reached, the worst shovelware available for this beige brick was still better than the most played smartphone games today.

I wouldn't mind all games moving on to phones if it was actually a decent way to play games. Touch and tap games almost all suck, and I don't like that there aren't physical buttons. most good games would take up far too much space to play on a phone and also the graphics could never be console levels. It's just sort of inefficient unless you're playing those awful free to play games. If they made a phone capable of all of those things, and actually released good games on it I'd probably be all over it.

3DS still has decent games, although I sold mine a while back since I never really played with it. Hell I still play with my old PSP all the time. I wish vita has cfw.

Apple alone is responsible for this. Their whole "everyone can be a developer" bullshit encouraged scam artists and hacks from all over the globe to start churning out shovel ware shit for the chance at getting $0.99-$5 per click from gullible normies. The concept of micro transactions only made it worse.
Google desperate for Android to gain traction eventually followed suit with their own store.

This is what happens when you have no real criteria for publishing on a platform. Its all Apple's fault.

I'd say that handheld gaming is the only form of gaming thats still truly alive.

People are going on about how the handheld market is dying but the 3DS is still the best selling system this gen and even the flop that is the Vita sells as much as the Xboner and WiiU.

I never minded playing roms on my phone when I had a slide out keyboard. Plenty of buttons without sacrificing screen space. But hey lets completely do away with keyboards and just have bigger screens nobody wants a keyboard right? Fuck that shit.

Yes when you can feel buttons you don't have to pay attention to them and just control them by touch alone while you focus on the actual game. Not the case when you have to look at the virtual buttons to make sure you're hitting the right one. Unless it's just one of those shallow gesture games.
