>>314825679>It might be dumb but it's doing its job.It cannot not do it's job. It's a connected vessel, rather than just simply mirror though: art can change, and with it change the society - and likewise, the society can change and with it, change the art.
There is no reason to be fatalistic about it, unless you actually AGREE with the values the art is representing.
>Also it could be seen as self-expression, which again comes under the umbrella of art. That is actually just one of the many modern nonsensical values that needs to go. It's predicated on the assumption that self-expression is inherently valuable - a form of intrinsic value of individuality. And yes, if you embrace this, art is going to be shit, and our society is going to be shit because rather than incentiving people to better themselves, you celebrate self-indulgence and arrogance.
>I don't really buy into this whole idea of certain models of values being better than others.Yeah, that is kinda symptomatic for the problem I'm talking about. THAT IS A FUCKING RETARDED ATTITUDE: Values exist for pragmatic reasons, they are tied to most prevailent behavioral patterns, and those are tied to our very survival.
Of course we need to constantly re-evaluate our own values and constantly improve them: they are, quite literally, key to our survival.
>There's no absolute or objective 'better', and people are just using past value systems to judge anyway, and they are entirely subjective too. Here is a tip: start treating the word "subjective" as a vulgarism. Seriously it will help you a LOT to actually get somewhere in your thoughts. "Subjectivity" is a worthless concept that has no place in ANY rational discourse.
As for no objectively better values: that is both wrong and right. There are objectively better and worse values, but the criteria of which are which are inaccesible to us. That is no reason to give up though: giving up means death for certain.
