You do realise that games like Fallout and Elder Scrolls have entered the mass market consensus as big, amazing games right? Reality is most of this medium, even at its best, is still niche compared to others. Every so often a franchise or single title penetrates into mass culture, like Call of Duty or Wii Sports. The kind of game people who don't even game much, but like the idea of it, know about and play and really enjoy.
Bethesda's modern Fallout and Elder Scrolls are that. In the same way ~everyone~ gets hyped for Marvel films and all that shit, so do people get hyped for Call of Duty, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, etc.
