Sega tried to pass Yakuza of as GTA IN JAPAN GUYZ back when there was an oversaturation of GTA clones. No wonder it failed.
But Sega was like "okay, they don't like the game, let's not think too much and stop the ads".
I heard a lot about the first game. It was marketed pretty hard - "look, new Shenmue, GTA in Japan", that kind of stuff.
Read the reviews (8/10, 7/10) and shrugged, cause I didn't have a PS2.
In 2009 or 2010 I was reading a game magazine and saw review of Yakuza 3 and was like "what the hell, they made not only two, but THREE?"
And in 2011 I've bought PS3 (after a year of working as a news guy at a game site) and saw Yakuza 4. Again, my reaction: "The hell, another one, what, when?"
They released games in total silence, no fucking wonder it doesn't sell.
Sega just aren't even trying.
As I said, they had plenty of chances and fucked up all of them.
Ishin could've been and exclusive for PS4 - nope. And don't start with "oh, nobody would've bought it, it's a niche game". Sony can market stuff, and they desperately need exclusives.
HD remakes could have been released digitally. Nope. Fuck that.
They miss every chance and you people act like it's fucking okay.
