When there wasn't a plus version it was, now i would say starting going Totori > meruru > Rorona makes more sense. It's a long time since i played them but i believe mechanics wise it might feel weird going from rorona plus to totori, not to mention Rorona plus has a part with both meruru and totori in it.

Escha & Logy is another good starting point. There's an 18 year old male protagonist for those who want a more traditional RPG experience (basically he's not a wet paper bag with early defense stats) and by the time you get into alchemy you're comfortable to move on to the other games where the alchemist immediately seek out the nearest tomboy to assist in battle.
