It's the second best MGS game as far as I'm concerned. Doesn't beat 3, but aside from that it blows everything else out of the water. It's no surprise /v/ over-hyped themselves over the new Triple A game and shitposted about it non-stop. It's this board's modus operandi.

If most of the promotional material advertises itself for the story and the way it's meant to conclude the series as a whole people have every right to complain when it ends up writing it's way around every question and theme that would have been interesting to explore in the context of the series and ends up having very little impact on it.

If you were to tell me 4 years ago the plot to MGSV as it stands now, you would be labled clinically insane. Nothing happens in this game that affects the other titles. Not skullface, not the man on fire, not venom, nothing. All we learn is shit we already knew. It's basically a good standalone open world game with new made-up shit but is awful compared to any core metal gear game.

Going back to Shadow Moses island was the best.
The metal gear Rex Ray fight was fantastic.

The story was open ended so almost any theory on the Patriots identity was valid. Everyone wanted to know the answers. A popular theory was the one when Vamp came back to life whenever he came to contact with water. But we were all grasping at straws, looking at MGS4 now...I wish we werent so demanding to know. Well, there were quite a lot of things happening in that time period that would have been morei nteresting than what we've got.

The conflict between big boss and Zero was pushed to the sidelines, the Les Enfants Terrible hardly factored into the plot, all the members of Foxhoung Big boss would have recruited around that time didn't show up, I'm pretty sure the war Raiden served in as a child soldier under Solidus happened around that time... and who's idea was it to have a character named Revolver Ocelot never even fire a single shot over the entire game anyway?

You'd have plenty of content to build a story around but instead they chose to make it kind of a one shot story, mostly diconnected from the other game. I guess it puts the events of Metal Gear in a new light and kinda sheds some light on Liquids motivation in MGS 1 but that's it.

This is an Action game for the CoD Audience, and they obviously wanted those, but they forgot that they had an audience, they didn't care to pander to

This is the worst installment despite its technological efforts, the gameplay and the story got butchered down to a minimum to satisfy the self insertion of player and the director.

All this personalizing, and then they present such an unpersonal, unappealing story with only good acting and nothing more to add.

Western audience seems to not care that much about unfinished stuff.

The only good thing MGS4 did was pull yet another major themeing at the expense of some gameplay aspects.

MGS4 was largely about nostolgia. No, I don't mean that the game relies on nostolgia to be good (even though that IS also true), I mean that the story is literally about look back at nostolgia and learning to accept things for what they are now. Chapter 4 in it's entirety pretty much perfectly sums this up to the player, even though they still hammered on the concept leading up to that point. The problem is that outside of that themeing, MGS4 was an incredibly cutscene bloated game that took control away from the player every chance it got to achieve this.

While MGSV may have been "Good game, just not good X game", it's hard to break the thought that MGSV was literally striving to do exactly that in the first place. I also hear how the game's structure is similar to Moby Dick, but I've never actually read that, so I can't say for certain.

I liked the story in all the MGS games, but moving on to a game with less story and more gameplay is in my opinion a step in the right direction. I honestly never thought the gameplay of MGS was that good, but Phantom Pain had some of the best gameplay I have ever seen in a game.

Maybe it's time to accept the game for what it is and not what it could've been. Its a game that focuses mostly on gameplay, but less on story. Aren't we satisfied that we got other MGS games with good stories, but now we finally have one with excellent gameplay?

I'd say it's more about accepting limitations and allowing the past to go away. Snake has given up on all ambition, war has become a ton of AIs fighting proxy battles to drive up the war economy, soldiers are conditioned to rely on nanomachines to the point that true soldier instincts no longer exist, and Snake and his cardboard box stealth is obsolete among the new world. He obviously doesn't feel up to the task, but something larger pushes him to go back to the battlefield, like it'll be his destiny to keep on fighting metal gears until he pulls the trigger on himself and ends the meme big boss's genes started.

Which can be put parallel to kojima's unwillingness to explain mgs2's story, or continue with the series as a whole.

Skullface also had somewhat noble intentions, of at least creating a fair playing field for the world of war that Big Boss wanted to impose. But skullface also wanted to truly control all nuclear distribution and determine which languages lived and died.

i would have rathered a linear narrative and kojima fucking build structure around it but he got too lazy for that now i guess hes more focused on having his name flash in as many credit scene as possible and put his likeness in a fucking dumb side mission. he's been going off the rails for a while now

most of the story is told in audio tapes?! fuck that horseshit they're long enough to make my controller turn off on its own.and a bunch of filler to make the story seem longer than it is

cant shoot the radios on the soldiers bodies which is stupid but is the only difficulty since they'll wake up unless you extract them or shove them in a port-o-potty. outposts are easy since you can come from any direction which you would think is open gameplay but its fish in a barrel. i remember the struts on Big Shell had harder soldiers to get around since they had posts to keep eyes out for threats and their placements were more though out. i mean yeah you can sneak but at some point everyone has their back to you. it feels like you accomplished something ransacking and outpost but all you had to do is run up on everyone cuz they have no fucking situational awareness, so to up that difficulty they whole post gets alerted automatic if you're spotted without radioing it in

i finished it just yesterday and still dont know if i like i or dislike it. it cant evoke any strong response from me like love/hate. just ehhh i feel like i got pic related

Basically it did exactly what 5 did in that people were expecting it to be heavily connected to the overarching plot of the series and the patriot stuff introduced in 2 and instead you only learn aboout it in some dialogue at the end and the rest of the game is about a completely isolated incident.
