3D Metroid isn't dead. Even if Federation Force ends up being dogshit, it's supposed to serve as a way to expand the lore and Tanabe said he had plans for future Metroid games (with Sylux having a role).

But 2D Metroid remains dead. Sakamoto said that he's done with Metroid and while this is probably a good thing, it means that no-one else will pick up the series.
