Halo 5 is a mixed bag.
The campaign is a huge disappointment imo.
No, it's not terrible, but compared to the other Halo games it doesn't hold up well. There are no memerable levels, the squad commands are lackluster and restrictive, and the whole thing feels very streamlines, like they tried to make it more cinematic than even Halo 4.
It's better in co-op. If you play it, make sure you do so with at least one more person.
As someone that actually liked the Halo 4 campaign, this was a disappointment.
I'm not buying that this story was the plan the whole time. It seems like it got majorly shaken up and changed late into development. Everything leading up to the game, from the Spartan Ops cutscenes to Hunt the Truth seemed so carefully played out and then this just feels disjointed and awkwardly forced. It just feels like maybe a good third of the campaign was cut out.
The multiplayer however is ducking incredible. Sure, not everyone will love it, every halo plays differently, but it feels like they finally figured out how to make Halo work in the post-COD 4 era without sacrifcing what Halo is. It's addictive, it's smooth, and it feels really good and rewarding for every kill you get.
The maps are not the best in the series, but they're fine enough and there's more of them than any other halo had at launch. Plus all Halo 5 DLC is free.
Does the multiplayer make up for the campaign? Yes I think it does. The campaign isn't terrible after all. However, it does keep the game from being the GOAT Halo or GOTY material.
Probably the best multiplayer game to come out this year, but if that's not what you like Halo for, then let this one pass.
Otherwise, see you in Breakout anon.
