After an entire console generation of Lightning, I need to expand my jRPG horizons a little.

FF13 made me want to kill myself half way throuh the first game, and time has not sweetened it.

Is pic related a good game in /v/'s opinion?

I've never played a DQ game before, but I heard they're all the blast in Runeland?

How's the story?

It looks a little "light hearted" (for better or worse).

Honestly, OP, it's probably the BEST place to start. Rare is it to find a game with such charm, and it will lay the foundations well for other DQ games, if you want more.

Not really. DQ3 is considered the best DQ (hell best JRPG ever). 8 is alright but not amazing. Personally I love DQ7 but because SE are fuckers we will never see the 3DS remake.

DQ8 is only as deep as it should be. It's "light" on story by the fact that there's not a million things going on at once. So you always invested in what is happening.

It doesn't have super deep themes like Xenogears or Xenosaga or whatever but the dialogue in DQ8 is very literate and clever. This combined with the art style makes the game just unbelievably endearing. It's the best PS2 RPG tbh.
