as I know handhelds were always more popular in japan than home consoles, and now that mobiles can run the same games or better without having to buy buy/carry another device it's pretty obvious why they become the most popular thing

also japan never cared as much about the graphics as the west does and as the new consoles only look a minimal better than the old ones it's really not that appealing to buy for example a ps4 when you still get games for ps3

In short the players who like console games didn't disappear, contrary to popular beliefs

Companies like Square and Sega started to cut their console output to focus on phone games, but they're quickly noticing it's not actually sustainable to only focus on them as successes are a matter of luck, while the console audience is still waiting for games

VNs aren't games and it's not like there isn't an even bigger industry that caters to massive casuals in the West. All the most challenging and "hardcore" games in this gen and the previous one were from Japan.

Because consoles were just an inconvenience. Playing games in bed under the covers is better than on a couch, and being able to play on the train, or on a plane, or during break at work, or at lunch at school is way better than being shackled to a TV and a power outlet. Now that the 3DS and Vita are managing PS2-level graphics and above, there are no technical limitations holding back certain genres, and there's no need for consoles anymore.

There are care centers and charities that do house calls for reclusive people who can't help themselves. That sort of pitfall/mental illness is probably deeply embedded in the public's subconscious. Parents take preventative measures, kids adapt. Friends or family members scrutinize, adults' interest diminishes or they adapt with their mobile, become discreet or go to arcades/pachinko parlors.
