Its wasteful for performance. In Borderlands 2 it literally halves the frame rate on a GTX770 from 120+ fps to 60-70fps.

Also Nvidia Gameworks is the devil

Physx is okay. Hairworks is great. HBAO+ is acceptable. Nvidia CHSS is much better than the AMD version.

They're alright effects, but GPU intensive.

I don't have any issue with it, the settings are always clearly marked up and optional so you know what to turn off first if the game is chugging.

It could have been done in a way that didn't drop your frame rate by fucking 30-50%. TressFX is far less performance demanding and actually runs on systems with AMD hardware

Because for the most part it doesn't actually make the game that much better, just adds neat parts here and there rather than make it look better as a whole.

The drop is performance is gigantic even if the frame rate is bearable. No developer in their right mind would integrate it heavily into their game.

Project Cars did and its a fucking disaster for anyone not running Nvidia's newest top end GPUs.

The GTX780Ti a fucking $700 GPU is matched by a damn GTX 960 in Project Cars

My concern is, why doesn't nVidia go after OTHER companies and goad them into using PhysX/GameWorks? Why do they insist on making generic AAA tripe into nVidia showcases, and not trying to strike a deal with Japanese developers. FF15 would be the perfect opportunity for a HairWorks promotion, have you fucking seen how the hair looks on PS4? I reckon this would cause a huge surge of GPU sales, since this is one of the most anticipated games of next year.

The reason you can't officially use a Nvidia GPU for physix with an AMD GPU is due to AMD refusing to work with Nvidia. I don't blame AMD at all for this actually. The hassle of working with Nvidia's drivers while handling their own would be more trouble than its worth

No, that's not why at all, there are a few reasons.

Devs don't have access to the code. So when it gets implemented it's either minor thing, or looks horrible - see The Witcher 3 harworks. Looks good on monsters, bears etc. but I wished I could turn it off for Geralt while keeping it for monsters, it was collar-clipping fest.

GameWorks is a GPU-based physics solution.

GPUs are extremely good at parallel processing, like ones used for advanced physics simulations. However, since the calculations for these advanced effects are done on the GPU, while traditional physics are better handled on the CPU along with gameplay logic, the delay in sending that data back and forth between the two is too much to use these effects for actual gameplay. That is why GameWorks effects are almost always things like smoke effects, which don't change the game in any meaningful way.

If you're wondering, yes, APU solutions do eliminate this issue.

You can do it with Windows 7 I've seen it work first hand. I made Mafia 2 physx run on my HD6970 and 8800GT. I still saw performance penalties but instead of running blow 20 fps I ran 30-70 with full physx enabled

Nvidia hair looked good in Tomb Raider 2013.

Like I could actually notice that it looks pretty. But in some cutscenes your fps dipped heavily when there was multiple haired characters close to the camera.

You must not have been around a few years ago. People used to have AMD GPUs for their main workhorse, and a dedicated Nvidia PhysX GPU for dedicated PhysX processing.

Nvidia didn't like this, so they went ahead and added a check in their drivers to see if your computer is using an AMD GPU, and if it is, disable all Nvidia functionality. Completely artificially. You can still download third party modded drivers without this check and do the same thing.

look a the grass, there basically isn't any.
Look at the low as rock textures.
The reflections in the pond are shit.
The shadows are plain and look at the rocks, barely any shadows.
The road is a fucking line in the ground, no indentation that anyone has actually used it.
The game looks like utter garbage.

they didn't. performance fluctuates from driver to driver, but overall it improves 1st year and then meanders around, usually going back to the usual FPS count.
nVidia doesn't butcher their older cards by drivers, see 6 month tests, FPS sometimes drops, sometimes raises up.

They kill them with something old cards can't do physically. Works as an extra failure from people trying to mess with their drivers. 780Ti is closer to 980 in games without excessive Gameworks implementation.

I was suing nVidia at that time, so I can't say. Usually AMD issues are overblown, but their DX11 driver overhead was kinda shit, still is. But in retrospect 7970 is a better choice IMO. DX12_0, and you can find benchmarks under the name 280X.

What I'm interested in, is how the hell they will use TressFX for Jensen.

Fable Legends doesn't use AC and nVidia is fine with it. They hate AC, not DX12. Because they cards suck at it.
Also new nvidia driver improves AotS performance.
