Actually there was, but Bethesda cut it due to time constraints. There was also a plan to have it that, as you did the MQ, the blight spread. There's a mod that puts them back in.

Morrowind's addition to TES lore was so underrated. As a 10 year-old I spent hours reading the in-game books and piecing together Tamriel's history. The design/lore of Oblivion and Skyrim were comparatively bland, but Morrowind is a pretty tough standard to live up to.

Morrowind definitely stands out there, but by no means would I call it underrated. It's a pretty common opinion that Morrowind has unique and in-depth lore.
