I think the most disappointing thing is that every M&L game has had at least a minor sprite update except this one. I like Dream Team's sprites yeah, but to just reuse them seems lazy. You can tell that the battle animations are exactly the same, even from the screenshot.

Combat is still Mario and Luigi style.

The biggest change is that Badges are now cards that need a certain amount of Star Points (earned through nailing Action commands) to activate.

Why do people keep posting this as if it's actually a bad thing as opposed to a great thing?

If I want an M&L game I want an M&L game.
If I want a Paper Mario game I want a Paper Mario game.
An actual full on crossover between the two would likely fail to capitalize on the strengths of either.

Doing a proper M&L game with Paper Mario being nothing but a complement sounds much, much better than a full crossover. And the same would be true if they were making a Paper Mario game with M&L elements.

All these damn shitposters. I can't even tell if the people repeating this supposed complaints are even fans of the Mario RPGs yet being deluded enough to think a full crossover would somehow be better, or if they are just shitposting.

Disregard Paper Jam itself. I have only argued about the idea of crossovers themselves.
People have complained about this ever since Paper Jam was first announced.

Paper Jam can be complete and utter dogshit. But doing one game with elements from the other to complement it still has far more potential than doing trying to do all things at once in a complete and utter mess.

Playing through Sticker Star right now and I'm actually really enjoying. The only main gripe I have with it is how generic the characters are. I don't mind Toads, Goombas, or Koopas but it'd be cool to give them a name at least.

Most of the hate for Paper Jam comes from the fact it's not going to be a Paper Mario game, let's be honest.

As someone who has loved every previous Mario rpg including SPM I got bored of Sticker Star after the first few hours and Dream Team after the first 30 minutes and dropped them both. Am I missing out on anything at all? They really do feel like both franchises entering their NSMB phases.

Sticker Star's changes are definitely more drastic, Dream Team has a handful of highlights but it's still probably the weakest entry. If you hate tutorials and just can't get into it then it's not worth forcing yourself.

The soundtracks and general art design for both are fuckin' outstanding, though.

The story is the weakest part of the Paper Mario games, this guy is technically the driving force behind the plot for 90% of Paper Mario TTYD and he's dull as dirt.

They could have removed the main plot and the game would be just as good if not better.

You could remove the plot and still have almost all of those in the game because situations like Fort Francis aren't "the story", it's a self-contained story where you get a pure heart at the end.

The self-contained chapters are what people like about Paper Mario not the overarcing story.

It didn't NEED to be a "true" M&L/Paper Mario crossover, that's for sure, it can get by just fine by the way they are doing it: M&L featuring Paper Mario

The problem is how it's presented. It's lacking the charm of both series that makes it so great. Instead of Paper Mario boosting Mario & Luigi, it feels like Paper Mario is trying to bring Mario & Luigi down instead, and it's just so depressing.

This game has every right to be great, it has the potential to even be one of the best Mario RPGs ever. But everything we've seen so far is just so "by the numbers" that it feels like it's all being squandered. It feels like such a waste.

IS deserves a lot of the blame for sure. I doubt Miyamoto even did much beyond those couple of suggestions, but frankly those suggestions were pretty bad and the ways IS interpreted them were even worse.

Miyamoto's definitely not as bad as /v/ makes him sound but I still think he has no room to discuss what makes a good RPG or a good story. He's a game design man and he's always at his best when strictly talking gameplay.

The gameplay is probably the best in the series with the battle system. The combat is standard but in the Dream World, you utilize an army of Luigis to help fight, complete with all the Bros Moves involving them. Hard Mode is also unlockable and there are optional bosses as well. Giant Bosses are also back from Inside Story.

Music is done by Yoko and still sounds very good. Art style is nice and it's not NSMB styled and the actual location is original (Pillow Island). Story has a nice twist with Bowser betraying the original villain for once, but is okay otherwise. Cast is good. Massif Bros were humorous and seeing the return of characters like Popple and others was nice.

I know this is gonna sound autistic but I keep envisioning that if some group of fans or interviewer tells Miyamoto that people didn't like Sticker Star as much as previous entries because of what he recommended IS to do, he will slowly lose it. First he will try and say "You don't understand," then he would be agitated and then ask "Why do you even want this?", and finally he just leaves to vent off in frustration or downright be in a senseless fury about "telling him what to do". It's strange but I keep picturing it in my head that it could happen.

Sticker Star is a good game though. What's most likely is it was chosen so they didn't have to force a billion cameos or upset everyone considering the fact the first three Paper Mario games have different aesthetics so they couldn't use them all.

SPM was different but still had story and charm, what the fuck happened past Sticker Stars?

IS took them. Also a lot of IS were busy trying to save Fire Emblem from cancellation with Awakening as they were also making that at the same time.

I would say it was more Iwata's fault than Miyamoto's. Iwata made them rush the game out in time for christmas. The real reason they listened to Miyamoto's "advice" at all was because Sticker Star was nowhere near finished at that point, so they pretty much had to remove all the story in order to get the game released on time. The Miyamoto reason was just cover.

Probably if the NX sells well. The better a Nintendo system does the more time they'll give most of their games.

When Sticker Star Launched the 3DS was still in "panic mode" so they needed a big title to launch. I don't think it's bad but the lack of story meant it would be quick to translate and release worldwide than if they had a very wordy game.
