I just get instantly turned off when there is a dialogue wheel or list since 80% of the time it means nothing. The only modern wrpg I played and did not stop in the first hour was DA:O but I lost my save and never looked back.

I'll give you my response to every thread like this

WRPGs are considered "dull/boring" and "too realistic or Tolkien-based" but this is why I like them so much more than JRPGs. WRPGs have a sense of realism and that gives us something to relate to. Then when something supernatural, crazy, or fantastical happens, it seems that much more amazing. The "realistic" style and setting really help to exaggerate the magical stuff that makes fantasy so cool.

JRPGs on the other hand are such a clusterfuck of fantastical and supernatural things that when something that is supposed to be "amazing" happens, it seems dull and boring because everything else is already too fantastical. There is no reference for people to grasp on to like what WRPGs do

What the fuck is WRPG style gameplay? The original Fallout and Morrowind play nothing alike, and neither of those games play anything like Knights of the Old Republic, which in turn plays nothing like Shadowrun.

JRPG and WRPG are completely meaningless terms.

What the fuck even makes a JPRG/WRPG? Is it a distinction based on geography? Because the only thing either of those two things tells you is whether or not a game is made in Japan, which is almost as useless a descriptor of the content of the game as telling someone what color the box is.

Is it one based on gameplay? It couldn't be, since both Japanese and Western (which is also a meaningless term, since it effectively just means "everywhere that isn't Japan") RPGs differ wildly in playstyle. Valkyria Chronicles and Dungeon Travelers 2 are made in Japan, and that's as far as the similarities go; similarly, the only thing The Witcher has in common with either of the two Fallout games is that they're both not made in Japan.

You should be fucking smarter than this, /v/. Stop using such stupid fucking terms.

There are JRPGs without turn based combat. They're called "Action RPGs" which is what Dark Souls is, not some retarded label that is meant to describe only the region the game is from. Examples of this are the Monster Hunter series, Soul Sacrifice, Y's Celceta, Gravity Rush, NieR: Automata, etc.

The only thing Dark Souls has really in common with WRPGs is the setting and being able to create your own characters. WRPGs don't have boss rush hack 'n slash based gameplay. They're all clunky as fuck and tedious to play through.
