The whole concept of the "Reclaimer species" would go right over their head. sure, we know Spark called Chief the reclaimer a lot, but how were we supposed to know that humans and only humans were meant to take up the Mantle? How were we supposed to know what the Mantle was from the few lines by Spark? How were we supposed to know that humans were a pre-historic galactic empire that rivalled the Forerunners? All that extra canon crap didn't need to be there, I'd much rather keep the Forerunners as mysterious as possible. Now they're just some dudes like the Didact who fucked around then died.
