Fuck no you're crazy. 2nd Gig is far more involved with the world of GiTS than the first ever was, and as a result has the ability to construct interesting scenarios regarding the technology introduced in the first season. I'm not purporting that the first season sucks or anything, just that 2nd Gig is most certainly not worse. Gohda is far more interesting than the Laughing Man.

Untrue. A landmark in animated films that brought in a story and tone not seen before. It doesn't pull any punches with its navel gazing, but the true highlights of the film are how it looks and feels and it looks fucking fantastic and the soundtrack, what little there is, phenomenally fits the scenes.

1st season: What does it mean to be human vs a robot. Does it really matter if the robot is advanced enough? What if you could transfer a human mind perfectly into a robot, would they be the same person?

2nd season: If you could do the transfer perfectly, could you also exist as just data? Could you transfer over long distances, or wait on the internet until you found a suitable host? Could you move an entire city's collective mind before they were hit by a nuke?

I can't really agree about Angel's Egg. It's its own beast really. Definitely a return to Patlabor movies, yeah. Hell, I'd compare GitS more easily to his Uruei Yatsura than to Angel's Egg, I think.

The whole script is very, very weak and unconvincing. Poorly written, I find. The Gary-stu character never fails to fail at looking like the interesting character the plot wants him to be.

The base idea informing the plot are fairly interesting. The execution, I found, was fairly bad.

I agree. Making her more likeable and "human" in the series makes sense, considering that the introverted and withdrawn movie version isn't exciting enough. But I think the show went too far, especially with the leotard (though it made for fine fap material). Also, bringing back the blue eyes really helped (sounds autistic I know)

Well, you can say what you want, but I find that GitS has created a universe where pretty interesting plots can unfold. There are plot points about corruption, politics, terrorism, AI, consciousness, identity, culture clashing with technology, and social phenomena.

They aren't perfect or anything, and obviously these topics are covered in other forms of entertainment, but it is at the least a lot more interesting than every other anime I have seen - I am sure there is some obscure shit out there that is good, but all the ones I have known about are not very cerebral. People will defend shit like Cowboy Bebop to the death, but that is because of the style or music. The plot of that show is literally a Sephiroth anime katana man running around in space being a villain while everyone has guns and spaceships.

I'm sharing my opinion, I'm never it was open for debate.

Too many small things adding up really.

One example that comes to mind is the Major getting her leg stuck and needing saving from Mr lonewolf awesome sauce, near the end.

The major. A character that tore her own arms trying to open up a tank. Like she wouldn't get rid of the needless part and keep going.
Very inconsistent with previous characterization. Feels like it was made artificially for the sole purpose of making a lackluster character shine.

And the brimming with bad details that spoil what could have a pretty interesting work, give the base set up.

Despite all the issues I have with Arise, I think I even prefer it to 2nd Gig.

What a detestable simplification of a complex character. Initially Gohda wanted to be like revolutionary heroes the essayist Patrick Sylvester wrote about, but very soon lost such delusion and now seeks to reform the state of Japan to its former glory from behind the scenes by crafting a political climate that would eventually birth a revolutionary hero of its own in Hideo Kuze.

And that's just my simplification.

I've played this. Even people who aren't cybernetic in the show are cybered up in this game, which is a huge oversight.

Otherwise the game uses clips from the anime to tell people's backstory and voice actors from the show. The setting was great, but the game itself was dogshit; unbalanced as fuck.

Yeah, I agree about 2nd Gig (haven't seen Arise though). It's just a variation on the phenomena that the first season already described, making it derivative. The love story I don't care for, and I prefer the corruption in the first season over Gouda wanting to cause chaos. Both had their fair share of decent and not-so-decent side episodes, though.

Well, the interlude scenes aren't as cool in the 2nd movie. The music is derivative of the first movie. There isn't really any cool art like you see from the first one - the buildings and streets, the reflections, or the tank fight as examples. A lot of it is placed by 3D rendering. On the other hand, the 2nd movie does try to be somewhat immersive regardless of all that, and I find the plot about the AI from the first movie to be a bit played out nowadays.

Start on the rest of Mamoru Oshii's films if you haven't, he's got a pretty distinct style. Patlabor 1&2 (I think 3 is also worth seeing but it wasn't directed by him), Jin-Roh and Angel's Egg are usually the standouts.

GitS 2: Innocence can get a bad rap because of its focus on characters other than the major, the more surreal tone, and the use of 3dcg, but imo it's absolutely worth seeing. Just don't go in expecting the exact same thing. Honestly there are some things about Innocence that I like more than the original film.
