One thing to note is, that this game isn't like other MMOs out there, you definitely do not and SHOULD not do every quest you come across. If you mostly stick to the ones with fireball exclamation points (main story quests) and your class/job quests (from your guild) you should be alright.

Sometimes you might have to do a few quests to level up to get to the next Main Story quest, but you can just run dungeons or do a few quests in the area.

A Nocturnal Sect AST is actually generally better than a Scholar when they're using the skills they have that map 1-to-1. The problem is that the skills that make Scholars so powerful have no analog in a Nocturnal Sect AST.
