Just because human souls don't REQUIRE compassion and empathy to exist, that doesn't mean they cant acquire them. That just means that human are not naturally inclined to be good people, which is the whole reason the war started in the first place.
I suppose that means that he could become even more evil, but I have faith in the goat child. He finally has the capacity to be happy once again.

You can just reset after the Sans fight, which is what it's all about anyway.
Or back up your save and tell yourself that it's like splitting the timeline rather than resetting it.
