That was soviet propaganda meme circulated because the USSR hated poland, it never happened.

There was a successful cavalry charge against a german infantry regiment, tank reinforcements came in shortly after and the cavalry immediately got the fuck out of there, albeit with heavy losses.

I think it was some italian reporter that was a retard and made the dumb assumption when he arrived after the battle that started it.

I know. I'm polish. Even in fucking diary of german sniper I've read some time go they mentioned during invasion Poles used horses mainly to get to the front, then they were unmounting and fighting as normal infantry with AT weapons and rifles. I still like to use this joke though.

Playing a new mod is always suffering for me because I don't know shit about it

I don't think it's a 1:1 copy but maybe it'll get pretty close to AC. I tried replaying it the other day and I couldn't because of the UI even though it's a fucking great game.

Have the developers ever said anything about removing the unit cost bloat and just making equipment better? that's the way it works in endless space, I can in a pinch, downgrade my dudes to get the cost down and bulk up my army through numbers.

In endless legend, my dudes get auto expensified and don't even get a boost large enough to count as that many points of units. It's fucking annoying as all hell. I've actually resorted to avoid going up in eras during the early game to beat the AI through raw numbers.

The economy is based on inflation meant to combat power increase. Tiles give you a set amount of resources, but your same unit will over time cost more and more and more with pretty much no increase in ability. So, you have to constantly expand your income through technology just to stay at the same level of ability as at the start of the game.

The technology tree on the other hand is not a tree. Just each further technology costing more and more. So, moving onto more advanced technologies makes all of them, even the shitty low tier ones, more expensive. This forces you to buy everything before moving on or having to spend extra when you suddenly need something you skipped.

It's driving me nuts, specially since endless space didn't have any of this fucking bullshit.

The combat has units that can attack, and the way they attack is modified by their equipment slightly. This, when combined with the unit's native abilities makes army building somewhat fun.

I don't know if I'd enjoy that. I want to play 4x games with engaging combat. It's why I really enjoy sins of a solar empire and age of wonders 3. The typical overworld point in click with minimal positioning requirements is too shallow and in a lot of ways, against the ai, too easy.

I stated an extreme size map with a friend in aow3, 6 ai, me and him, full free for all. It took us 240 hours to finish. It was awesome.

Don't take my word for it, but EL multiplayer combat will probably be similar to civ (mainly using auto-resolve). This will be to cut down turn times and make the game faster. That's not to say that you can't set your own rules, but that is what I expect it to be like.

I don't remember Sins' combat being particularly involved. Just sending units to battle fronts and watching them do everything on their own. Positioning and such didn't particularly matter and units would automatically change facing to bring the most guns to bear. I think some ships had abilities you could activate, but they were more of a hassle to micromanage than anything.

Or maybe I'm remembering a different game.

I hate how to the AI, there's no difference between not being at war and raising your relationship status with them. If I'm still Sanctioned or Neutral with them, that shouldn't count as trusting them.

The colossal tile-smashing ability is actually pretty useful if you've got one leashed. If you're Cooperating or Allied you get auto-open borders, so you can send your alien into AI territory. Just by going across their territory, you auto-break their tiles, but suffer no diplomatic loss.

I'm mad that there's no way to improve an AI's relations other than by impressing them by having better improvements/army/science than them. There is no way to prevent the AI from disliking you and ending up in endless wars for the first 200 turns. Even if you don't end up in wars, you'll get sanctioned which removes the ability to initiate diplomatic agreements, which is the ONLY way of interacting with the AI.

As I said before, the increase is much smaller than the same amount of points in units. I don't remember the numbers exactly off the top of my head, but you get a price increase of 50% for a strength increase of 10% or something like that. It was stupid and all it does is weaken you.

Additionally, if your infrastructure has suffered from war, you will go into a death spiral, since you will become unable to produce the nits needed to reclaim territory.

In endless space, when you got your shit pushed in, you could get some outdated ship designs and go retake poorly defended territory. In legend, the units would still cost a gorillon, even with shit equipment, new colonies become unable to produce jackshit without a hero or abusing the stock system and generally, the whole thing is poorly balanced for some weird ass reason.

They did it right with endless psace, no idea what possessed them to make this garbage economy.

I didn't mind the superpower mod for civ5 that had two units per tile.
Just having no limit and the combat being instant death for fighting isn't too fun.
Early game is good, mid game is where the ai will start to out perform me.

Going to try AoW3 again only got eternal lords. Rather bullshit it took them long enough to add the necromancer.
AoW3 was cancer on release.

Sure the combat for civ5 was great though call to power 2 didn't feel that bad either. That had the entire stack vs stack at once.
Ai is pretty shit in most of the civ games for it to be able to do anything well.

What's the largest you've ever gotten a city?

This is with Temple of Artemis + Floating Gardens for that fantastic base food % bonus.

I imagine that on a lower difficulty, where games are longer and religion/wonderwhoring is easier the largest city you could get would probably be the result of:

8 cities redirecting Sending naval food trade routes to the capital
Granary, Floating Gardens, Hanging Gardens, Temple of Artemis, Hospital, Aqueduct, Medical Lab
A Food pantheon such as Goddess of the Hunt or Sun God, Feed the World, Swords into Ploughshares
And the full 500 turns

I got a city to 50 playing as Spain, nabbed Lake Victoria and got the 12 food from a single tile, redirected trade to it, managed to get hanging gardens too, but temple of Artemis was built in my capital instead, that meant it still got the buff. Also got Petra in that same city.

Most of your money will be coming from your ridiculous number of trade routes. Generally speaking play nice for most of the game.

Since you're not building settlers early game, it's usually pretty safe to try for one of the Ancient era wonders like Artemis or Halicanarssus.

Diplomatic victories are naturally the easiest for Venice. Their UA works extremely well with the CS-influence boosting Freedom tier 3 tenant.

But don't worry too much about that, Venice, with their ridiculous potential GPT, can do just about anything.

Ones that are closest to you are the safest, and generally the ones I buy. Also because having 2 cities on opposite ends of the planet early in the game really bothers me. But otherwise yeah, just buy the most useful city-states. Keep in mind those bonuses are lost upon purchase.

If you're feeling like invading, you can donate an army to a city-state of your choosing, and then buy it, instantly getting a foothold and essentially "teleporting" your army

Religion never hurts. If your starting area requires you to research Calendar for those plantations, it's worth trying for Stonehenge which will basically guarantee you a religion on Emperor and lower and give you a good chance on Immortal and Deity.

Also worth noting: You can raise an army extremely quickly with your level of gold income.

Big Ben + Mercantilism reduces purchasing costs by 40%. It's a pretty decent combo for any civ, but even more so with Venice.

With T3 Freedom Tenant "Spaceship Procurement", SS parts are only 1850 gold with that combo, meaning you can win Spaceship races in the blink of an eye

If you instead to go hardcore domination, picking up Autocracy's Mobilization tenant will further reduce Unit purchasing costs by 33%. That means you can have Battleships and Infantry for less than 300 gold (don't remember their costs exactly), and Artillery for about 200.

Piety is workable but as always, sub-optimal

I like to grab the commerce opener just so I can build Big Ben. If I have the culture output for policies before I open Rationalism, then I'll fill out commerce at least as far as Mercantilism.
Rationalism is never a bad choice. Even just having the opener, or +2 science per specialist, is a great benefit.
And if you're really angling for a diplomatic win, at least grab the Patronage opener.

I hope that Civ 6 does something like Endless Legend did with terrain elevation. Combining that with the deeper oceans from Beyond Earth and you could have some really interesting maps.

And hopefully the engine is new and allows terraforming of some kind, instead of requiring you to reload the map after editing the terrain.

To expand on that, assuming you have the 1 % from industry virtue(there's another 1 % from finishing industry, but that will take too long to consider), you will go from 5 % to 6 % interest rate every turn.
The math formula for how long until it doubles is: x = (ln 2) / (ln (1 + interest)). X is the amount of turns until your cash, and thus also your interest gain, doubles.
For interest of 5 % (4 % smart grid(cooperative) + 1 % industry virtue): x = 14.21
For interest of 6 % (5 % smart grid(ally) + 1 % industry): x = 11.90
Allying the ai will give quite nice bonuses, and can be worth it if your ally doesn't have any clear enemies and you're feeling lucky.

Also, the +1 movement goes a long way in kiting and taking cities. It's no wonder Camel Archers were so annihilated by keshiks in real life that Arabs are still mad about it 700 years later.

I just finished my first game of Civ V in well over a year.

It was marathon/king/(randomed)Pangaea, I randomed into Babylon, and lost 10 turns away from winning a science victory when the Inca, which had captured the entire Eastern half of the continent, voted themselves World Leader.

I realized what it is about Civ V that I dislike, which I'd never been able to verbalize before.

After about 1,000AD, nothing changed for the entire rest of the game. The Inca kept winning Wars and taking one city at a time and picking off the weakest civs, but never managed to push East. Venice and Ethopia kept sperging missionaries all over. None of the alliances ever shifted. Nobody rose from behind to power. Nobody fell from the top into mediocrity. I threw my tech and military might at the Inca every now and again, and razed a city if I was lucky, but it wasn't enough.

So for the entire rest of the game it was a foregone conclusion. Either I'd win a science victory, or the Inca would win a diplomacy victory. I probably could've crippled the Inca with a super dedicated military campaign, but in the meantime I'd fall behind in every other regard and for whatever reason war isn't fun in this game.

Was it the difficulty (too high or too low for my skill level?) The map size/Civ count? My Babylon playstyle (make science buildings and walls)?

I don't need to relive Civ 4, but I'd like to at least enjoy Civ V again.

It's not just you, most civ games are decided by the end of the midgame. However, in your case, it definitely seems like you didn't do enough to stall the Inca.

The problem wasn't me so much as it was the other civs.

The Inca became a huge powerhouse in the early game (as the Inca tends to do).

I had the tech and production to match them, but even though every other Civ would join me in war none of them would do anything. I actually had to pass through Venice or Ethopia, which were closest to the Inca, to get to him.

But they didn't do anything to him, and just caught up to me while I spent my production on siege weapons and whatnot.

It WAS pretty satisfying when I dropped four nukes on him, but by then he didn't really care, because he'd taken four huge capital cities.

I should clarify:

I don't mean it's not my fault I lost, rather, I mean the other Civs were better positioned to fight than I was (I was the furthest from the Inca and had to go indirectly around a mountain range), but even when WW1 broke out with Everyone vs Inca, nobody but me committed anything.

I just gave up on my deity game too where I was boxed in by the AI in a corner of the map, defending myself against 2 civs attacking me. Sometimes you just can't have enough time to deal with your neighbours and runaway civs.
Germany was on the other end of the map and had taken 2 capitals, was sitting on almost 20 cities and had a full rationalism policy and a few order policies. By the time I dealt with England and Shoshone, Bismarck was already building space ship parts and was about 10 techs ahead of me. Damn shame, I really loved this natural mountain chain

Different anon here. If you're playing Babylon and losing with a science victory on King, you're probably doing something wrong. In the short term you might drop the difficulty, if you're finding the game to be not fun. If you're not having fun, you shouldn't be playing after all.

In the long term, you might look at some guides to decide what you can do to improve your play. Even going for a science victory your gold production should have been enough to allow you to buy out city states as allies for votes. You could also use your spies to coup city states/wage limited war to liberate civs. Point being, you really shouldn't usually have to worry about losing diplomatically. The AI really isn't that good; it's the ridiculous bonuses they get in Immortal and Deity that can make it competitive.

Yeah, the way Deity stacks everything against you can be fun and challenging sometimes, but sometimes it's so bullshit I find myself dropping things down a notch or two just so I can have a bit more fun.

TL;DR: First Deity game, keep or reroll?

This is my first Deity game, and i find this start to be good enough, given this is Archipelago.
What worries me is that Archipelago isn't optimal map for Spain (i'll build a scout first anyway, but i'm afraid i'll have to make ships to find early natural wonders, but i'd probably still be able to find one pre-turn 50) AND i have almost no early production (Stonehenge and Great library in my opinion are out of question, as is the Great lighthouse, since it's Archipelago.)
Maybe i could attempt Temple of Hartemis + Gardens, but i'll see how the game goes first.

Deity is doable, provided you had an above average start and the AI doesn't only target you. Requires you to take advantage of everything you can and doesn't allow room for errors. I can win on deity only when the AI doesn't turn out to be something among the line-up of Russia, Korea, Babylon, Shoshone, Rome, Assyria or any warmonger that can keep up with you after the Renaissance era

I figured someone would chime in to say something like this. The point was more that until the highest difficulties you can usually mess around with whomever you want doing what you want and still steamroll the opposition. If he's losing on king, there's possibly some basic stuff he's missing or not doing properly.

Shaka has DoW'd me on turn 20 on a deity game and didn't want to peace out until I got artillery. Unless you can bribe him to keep him off your back, I wouldn't settle so close to him. Keep 3-4 ranged units near your city if he decides to do something funny but don't skip out on science. Try to survive impi onslaught and push him back. He is terrible at science, but makes up for his strong unit which negates science lead

Also this allowed me to get religion first at least.

I have pic related + 1 archer produced in the capital and another coming out in like 3 turns. However, i haven't even got a library out yet, which sucks.

Would 3 archers + 2 melee meatshields be enough for now?

That city spot is kind of bad for growth. Flatland desert is almost as bad as snow unless you are Morocco. If the north part of your continent wasn't desert and Shaka wasn't your neighbor, you should have settled on the river near the sheep. 3 composite archers and 1 melee unit to block the way are enough to deal with him before impis. After he gets them, you must have a citadel or a fort to stop him. Impis hit twice per attack and get special bonuses from Zulu's barracks UB. The deity AI's units also start with cover 1, medic 1 and barrage or open terrain bonuses. They can't use that to their advantage as they will shuffle them around awkwardly and use up heal instantly 90% of the time.

I see. The growth rate is indeed shit.
However, the strategic positioning (only 1 spot left to attack the city directly from that direction) + the immediate exploit of the Wonder kinda made me decide to settle there. Northern and i'd have been surrounded.

Thanks for the tips anyway, i'll get up some walls once the granary is complete.

Also, enhanced my religion.
I was tempted to get holy warriors, but they cost too much, even though i have +24 faith per turn.
So i opted for a good Pagodas + Mosques combo and the discount on missionaries.

If i survive this hellish early game i could even survive Deity.

Honestly? It is hard. A lot. Mostly because it isn't a game of "i must not fall behind" but rather "i must catch up", otherwise you'll end up objectively inferior in every field of the game.

It does require at least a decent start (mine was nice because of the fish, otherwise it'd have been shit tier with luxury) and a good build order, since every turn counts, you can't just fuck around like at Immortal (always played that difficulty, and eventually i defeated it often enough that i decided to try Deity, and trust me, there is a huge gap).

In my experience the ai cheats / plays well but still makes some tactically nonsense decisions, I've been in games where I've bombarded cities of players for hours but in an ai maych, even diety, they just play stupid af and you can usually knock out a city less than an hour while they have armies moving around the map not contributing to themselves

To build on this I feel vs ai you spend more time fighting the odds than smart ai play. He might move his tanks in nonsensical ways but he'll have 4x more tanks roaming. Same goes for expansionism, the ai sometimes builds cities in questionable ways, but you sure as shit won't have as many, as big as the ais.

Why don't Civ games have pictures with sounds instead of combat animations? Wouldn't it be better?

>check civ to see what type of culture
>check terrain to see on what city is built (mountains in background if city founded on mountain)
>check population to see what buildings we see (skyscrapers or small townhouses)
>check unit defending
>check unit attacking and it's civ

you could probably go further if unit is veteran and what not but still, this is completely doable.

Still be better than animation. The picture would go in center with sounds. You could also "examine city" with this thingy.

Most people will enjoy it for the first couple play throughs, you'll get some good hours out of it maybe, a weekend or two.

But it doesn't have the lasting appeal that civ 5 has. It's just too fucking easy even on the hardest difficulty. Just everything in the game is so poorly balanced that there are so many ways to basically just cheese the fucking game that it literally feels like you're cheating sometimes. Like in civ 5 if you get the great library, yeah, it's a nice bonus, but you're certainly not in any position to say "okay this game is totally mine now" in beyond earth, you get a good artifact like the -30% technology cost, or 100%+ virtue rate, or you get the alien bones and you get an opportunity to catch a kraken early and it's just GG. It's so easy to just get lucky and be able to just call a game by turn 100 because there's no way you can lose, it takes all the fun out.

The diplomacy is very shallow and worse than I remember vanilla being, and the AI is terrible, they build armies consisting almost solely of combat rover and patrol boat variants, rarely anything else, and then the AI just suicide charges everything at cities, having zero strategy. Like, they'll suicide charge their melee boats into a city before softening it up with any of their few gunboats, and then not have any melee boats left to actually capture the city. Then they continue attacking the city at 0 health, even though they can't capture it, that's how fucking poor the AI is and it happens often.

These ships here? They were like that for dozens of turns, surrounding the alien, but not attacking it. The NSA ships left every other turn, but came back right away on the next in that exact same position. The France ships didn't move at all. They were just there. It's not just stupid AI, it's broken AI. Clearly it isn't working the way it should be.

I had to send a gunboat in to kill the alien to fix the ships.

There are a ton of mods that add civs and change base civs as a result. For example, there is a mod that as Roosevelt as an American leader, which steals the B17 from Washington. In return, Washington gets a new UB and might have a buffed UA (I don't remember for sure). Just check out common historical civ mods like the ones from JFD and you can get everything you might want, either in a new civ for the civ you want to play as or buffs.

Another idea would be to use the 3UC and 4UC mods. They give every civ some new uniques, which is a buff for everyone, but I think it was made to bring all power levels closer in line. I haven't used it since I downloaded a bunch of modded civs, but if you stick to unmodded civs, this mod may be helpful.

Only with Spain it is a logical thought to settle in the middle of a barren desert just because a Natural Wonder is there
Only with Spain you would go full imperialist to conquer a CS that has a good Natural Wonder
Settling between the two mightiest civs because the Fountain of Youth is there is totally understandable
The bonuses they can get from natural wonders is just so strong that you are liable to do otherwise retarded things. And that leads to shenanigans because you put yourself in bad positions just because it's worth it

Tbh, when I get a religion as Spain in 2000BC and spread it over the continent I always get pissy when someone who I previously converted founds their own religion. And then before I know it I am role-playing as the Spanish inquisition.

Well, I just finished my first game of Rising Tides. While it did make the game more playable and more fun, there are also some things that got worse with the expansion. Here's some rambling.

Biomes mean something now, very cool. Alien personality changes based on the biome. Granted, I play on Frenzied Aliens, so your mileage may very.

War sucks, don't go to war intentionally unless you want to wipe the other civ off of the map. In Rising Tides the player cannot make any demands from war. You can't say you want a white peace, or a specific city, money, resources or anything else. For example, I was fighting Al-Falah in war. I was Chungsu and intentionally only had cities in water. I was playing the standard difficulty and was naturally higher in affinity than the AI. All I wanted was a white peace. Eventually she offered a city, and her text seemed war weary. Yet, she called my peace offer a joke. I was building the Mind Flower at the time, so I just her cities, blocked her from my cities, and played like we weren't at war. She offered four cities at one point. They tried to make warscore like it is in the Paracucks games, but they forget that choice was one key aspect.

Diplomatic Capital is cool because it adds an actual dynamic economy within the game. Inflation is controlled by dumping points into new personality traits and upgrades. Eventually, you cam buy units and buildings. Fuhrer Lena is pleased.

Diplomacy, however, needs work. When looking at alliances, I am convinced that AI does not weigh potential alliances in war. Two-city NSA attacked me when I was allied with the second place guy. What? I allied every single AI in the game at one point, I felt like I enforced the Pax Romana. One AI eventually declared war on another, which resulted in every single civ being at war with every single civ. Very interesting.

Here's how it works. Certain buildings and wonders grant you an amount of Diplomatic Capital Points (DCP herein). In this way they are generated like any other resource. To my knowledge, there is no downside to going wide in order to get lots of these points.

Now, each civ on the map can have a total of 4 personality traits. One of them is unchangeable because it is specific to your civ. For example, Chunsu's grants them a covert agent from day 1 and 10 science for successful covert operation. This can eventually be upgraded with DCP to 25 science per operation and another agent.

Then were are Military, Domestic, and (iirc) Political traits. Each category has 10 options, but you can only choose one.

Points can be spent to initially acquire the non-racial traits and upgrade existing traits. However, every trait has a bonus that the player has no access to. The AI can pay you diplomatic points per turn for the bonus. Much in the same way, the player can look at AI traits and attempt to pay for a bonus. These buffs can actually be extremely strong, and are worth paying for. Addionally, the AI won't always say yes. This ties in to diplomatic status.

WAR-Sanctioned-Neutral-Cooperating-Alliance

War is obvious. When one country sanctions another neither can get the diplomatic bonuses from the others. This is neat, I'd imagine it's even cooler in a multiplayer game. Neutral to Alliance is when you can make these agreements. The higher the relationship status (bitch hit me up on kik, fam) the higher the multiplier on these deals.

Diplomatic capital is not like mana in Paracucks games, it is not required to declare war or other shit. Additionally, it can eventually buy units and buildings just like money.

Getting there slowly. This is one of the starting spots worked out where 2 others are.
Wonder if theres a movement mod out there, because I don't like how you can just cross a river or sea so easily.
Might just add deadly sea monster stacks that also respawn.
Only down side to making a map is that cities cannot be given out to players randomly.

I just hate either playing a game where everything fucking takes forever, or everything goes too fast. I'd rather there be some time to have some good warfare and shit in the era's and not have to constantly be upgrading new units and shit.

Kind of wish they gave us more tools to create our own scenarios and shit just in the base game. Just a max era limit would be nice, sometimes I just want to play in the classical era, or modern era or some shit, but not play one of their fucking scenarios ya know.

Turns out there was a mod. Doesn't work with random maps though. made all the moutains and rivers unpassable on the map.
Going across the Sea is fine.
They should have made mountains and internal water unpassable for non flying units by default.

Might have a look later at changing the movement costs for roads, forests and wetlands.

Anyways, that's good. I'm going to play with the mod manager. I like the idea that you can go through rivers, though - at least via bridges. If water is a natural border you should still be able to bridge it. Sea is fine, you're right. It should just put take more effort out of a water crossing, IE i should know your army is coming basically 2 turns in advance via your builder trying to build a bridge. the 0 turn crossing rule depending on research / civ is pretty annoying, when you would otherwise have a GREAT location for a fort or something similar.

i've got to get better at dropping forts everywhere for free gold / mana gen when it's out of territory, too.

CS run on a happiness system as well. The reason they raze cities is that CS only get one luxury, so they have very low happiness and don't want to be too unhappy. But if you're lucky, the the conquered city will have pretty low pop, some happiness buildings, and a new luxury or two, and will not be razed.

what's your favorite map size, relative to how many other civs are in the game?

The settling near mountains part on the other hand is something you should always strive for anyway though, regardless of civ. Observatories are just too great.

I don't think I'd enjoy age of wonders 3 if it wasn't for the combat. Defending and sieging cities is so much fun. The rpg like progression on the hero is fun too. The expansion part is kind of w.e otherwise, the town building is a little too simple / easy, there is literally no downside to just plopping towns everywhere, although it's tedious to up them all, so time I guess. Otherwise, meh.

Also why the fk is that spell that attempts to fear the whole board so op. Like seriously wtf, I had 3 stacks of 6, attacked, he cast mass hysteria or w.e and 7 of my guys fled the battle. Then I had to flee with everyone to reset the attack. Annoying.

So how is deity on marathon? Is it even fucking remotely possible? On normal pace you can at least somewhat keep pace and maybe catch up and pass depending on your focus, but on marathon it seems like it'd be impossible to catch up no matter what trying to catch up 5 techs while researching at half speed, plus the extra settler and units the AI gets and shit.

Small, no city-states, normal number of civs (can't remember what the default is). Taking city-states out makes world congress more interesting because normally I would have bought all the city states (on emperor) and would be swimming in votes. Votes get crazy when someone else is in charge of the congress (like when Gandhi embargoed the two big empires on the other continent). Also, no city-state buffers means more borders with people and more room to expand.

Man this game was so bizarre.

Originally, with Austria buying city-states and Mongolia and the Huns conquering city-states left and right, I thought Diplomatic victory was out of the question.

Later on I destroyed Greece and Mongolia with Indonesia's help, and since I grabbed autocracy (in order to make nice with Indonesia and avoid the inevitable massive happiness hit if I had picked something else). I thought I could go for a Domination, but Austria's capitals were landlocked, meaning I couldn't battleship rush it, and Indonesia was my ally of convenience, and after the Huns destroyed Austria their military production sort of began to massively spiral out of control.

So Domination ended up being out of the question. There was no way I could compete with the AI's culture and tourism output so that was out of the question, but at least Attila and Gajah Mada were essentially making no progress against each other in that respect.

What with all the CS conquest and purchasing, it actually looked like a diplomatic victory would have been possible, securing one of the few remaining CS alive and then just not winning the United Nations until the free delegates made it possible to win.

And that almost happened, my Spaceship just happened to be faster.

AoW3 just has units and no figures.

This game is pretty fun.

I feel like I'm actually learning about strategy and stuff by making retarded blunders. Like last game I tried to attack through a mountain chokepoint, that turned out to be a huge waste of time. Increase to 2 turns, put the starting era as Information and try to settle as many cities as you can with your 3 settlers. The AI will be too picky about where to settle, so it won't settle their cities in time.

I think the Aztecs are cool as hell, but the idea of their culture in the modern era freaks me out a little.

Like can you imagine, say, instead of the Mexican-American War, an invasion by the Aztec Empire?

Like next time you play as the Aztecs, or see the Aztecs taking cities, If you see a size 30 city flip and go down to size 15, imagine the Aztecs sacrificing all of them. I believe from the way Civ 5 calculates "population", that 30 to 15 drop is 11 million people.

I mean how are you even going to sacrific 11 million people

Can someone explain the appeal of Age of Wonders 3 to me? I played it a lot for a period and I found it really boring. Your cities aren't unique in any way, you just build everything. The point is that they didn't convert everyone to their way of life of desert barbarianism and christianity 2.0 after taking over the provinces. They adopted themselves to the existing roman administration and infrastructure. Most of the functionaries would still be christian and use latin/greek for to run the government and provinces. Hell, for the bureaucrat nothing much changed other than ultimately answering to Damascus instead of Constantinople. And a tax.

As far as AI handicaps go for increasing difficulty, I really wish that unhappiness reduction wasn't so damned ridiculous.

Like 50% production discount on everything is fine, a free settler is fine, 5 free techs and 5% cheaper techs, that's fine, everything is fine.

But damn if a massive empire composed of surely millions upon millions of people living in lands invaded and occupied is undergoing a "Revolutionary Wave" (and in an excess of -100 Unhappiness from ideological pressure alone), surely, that have to slow them down a little bit.

Most of the time you'll want to settle off resources, as that'll let you improve them and boost their yield. But you'll find yourself settling on certain resources depending on the circumstance.

Say I found a really nice Mountain/River tile but there was gold or something on it. I'd settle on the gold.

The only problem I'm having with them is that while the gold cost to increase pop increases as steep as in EL, the gold production doesn't come close.
Those 50% dust buildings are necessary in EL and the fact that you lack them hits hard

Map maker isn't too hard, theres just one bug you want to avoid.
Before you set a city to a player make sure you set the size or it loops an error.
Also get the mod decodence. Adds unpassable terrain so it doesn't look shit.
Adds tundra and autumn as well not sure if the mountains are unpassable by default.

Does Venice have a particular bias?
I know that he's Coastal, but does it also have a guaranteed good coastal spot or am i just lucky?

With other coastal civs i get shitty starts or average ones, with Venice i always get some nice sea resources and two luxuries. Is it because Venice can only have one city or is it just luck?

In Beyond Earth, is it even worth starting the Might or Knowledge virtue trees before completing either Industry or Prosperity? Even though the former two each have a Virtue for health, it doesn't seem sufficient enough to sustain a wide colony. The latter two seem like ones you'd select after completing at least 10 Virtues in either Prosperity or Knowledge

I generally start industry as I think it's just better than the others, outside of prosperity's increased explorer modules. That being said, the extra covert agent in knowledge is arguably worth it to rush as ARC.

On another note, going wide is just something you do while ignoring health, you just get it back up later.

Same here, hit-chance is a terrible mechanic.

I only mentioned it cause it is possible to do it, copy Lucky and give it to all units (take out the SFX though)

It really depends on who I'm playing as (in CiV), generally I don't make more than 2-3 total cities until very lategame, but if I'm playing a wide civ like rome I'll make a ton

I'll sometimes pick up the first level of Might if I'm about to be forced into an early war, just for the bonus XP. But aside from that, no. Prosperity and Industry are just so good there's no real real reason to go majorly outside them early.

I generally start tall, but that's just because I'm really picky with city sites. Later on, though, I will often put a few cities down just for strategic resources if I'm missing something. I actually used the conquistador's settle on another continent ability on my last pangaea map because I had 0 coal. It was a shitty site, but it was worth the 7 coal and 7 factories.

If I'm below Immortal I'll go as wide as I damned please because the AI's not gonna be able to stop me.

Immortal and Deity I'll be a bit more cautious about expansion because otherwise I'll be buried in a carpet of angry Impi or something. Usually on the higher difficulties better to just start out turtling and getting your science up, and then once that's in place shitting on the AI with your battleship or rocket artillery or whatever.

Also if you're playing as the Ottomans, Aztec, or Zulu, keep around a few Jaguars], Janissaries, or Impi. The AI is tremendously bad at dealing with highly mobile troops like that, and Mechanized Infantry that heal after a kill, or have 4 movement points and a ton of ranged defense, are really tough cookies.

I definitely find wide more fun - "expanding glorious empire" and shit, y'know? But I like tall too, I find tall empires much easier to optimize and get sick yields going without worrying about the tech/policy cost raise of going wide.

Generally speaking I'll go wide for domination and culture victories, and tall for science. tall/wide doesn't matter much for diplomacy victory, I think.

It's fun in these circumstances;

1) Play shorter games than you would in CIV4/EL
2) Play with unit abilities/classes/heroes
3) Play in Hot Seat

But if you're just gonna play it like it's some regular 4x game dont bother. EL does everythin it does and better

On an unrelated note, I feel like Austria's a pretty good Civ for getting that "Massive Empire" feel without having to warmonger or "actually" go wide. Because you can settle your first 3 or 4 cities, and then just turtle. Later in the game when you've got more happiness than you know what to do with, just start buying up CS. Your social policy acquisition will no-doubt slow, but those fully-developed cities will no doubt easily make up for the 5% increase in science cost.
