Dude, you can literally drag notes to the right timing so you don't have to keep tempo on your first attempt.
Sure midi doesn't have the same sound and feel as live instruments but it can't be beat in efficiency.
All you need is not to be tonedeaf and you could literally come up with good tunes

I hope Black Sands is successful though I don't expect it to be. The guy tries his best and the new art honestly looks decently cool. I just feel like we've been overexposed to it by the time he actually launched his campaign and I'm not sure there's a right target audience for it.

Honestly, that's why I like Sekai Project. I've always thought it was only a matter of time before Japanese companies start doing localization themselves. SP at least pays attention to EVN's and helps them out.

Conversely, JAST hasn't done anything EVN-wise and Mangagamer picked up AJ Tilley's stuff and Menagerie

Evns are at the same level as Japanese doujin games. That's not an insult, but most are low budget and done by relatively inexperienced teams. Doujins are much cheaper to license and are usually much faster to translate, so not everything that gets brought over will be leagues above your work.

They can give your kickstarter and game launches a signal boost, and maybe some press coverage, but that's about it. WC just shows that once a company has established itself, that the publisher is just a drain on profits.

hey guys, I wanna get your opinions on something.

I'm trying to figure out the "perfect" formula for the visual novel medium.

Let me explain.

In movies, they're typically around 1 hour to 3 hours. In Hollywood, there's a clearly defined format for the script, which goes like this:
>Introduce Hero
>Hero's normal life
>Something bad happens
>Hero is called into action
>Hero goes on a journey
>He/She sucks at it
>Hope spot, does something and succeeds for a short bit
>Villain quickly gains the upper hand
>The darkest moment in the movie happens where the hero loses all hope
>hero gets back on track
>Using the chekov's gun trope, what was introduced as a small detail in the beginning becomes the solution in the end
>Hero uses this to save the day
>bad guy is beaten and hero learns his/her lesson

not all movies turn into gold following this formula but it is THE formula nonetheless.

For TV show mediums, the format goes like this:
>characters run into problem
>cliffhanger
>commercial break
>characters fix the first cliffhanger problem, they run into another dangerous situation
>cliffhanger
>commercial break
>characters fix the 2nd problem and either beat the villain or it becomes another cliffhanger for viewers to watch the next episode

Due to their respective mediums, the writing is structured different. How do you think VNs work best in what format based on what your favorite VNs have been like?

A character who fails but gets up and tries again until they get it right is more entertaining to watch.

my 2 cents, you can agree or disagree.

I find that my favorite vns tend to be less on the wordy side. It's character drama and the characters talk to each other about their situations. 1st person vastly preferred.

I'm starting to heavily dislike 3rd person in vns because shit writers tend to abuse it by describing every inane detail that adds nothing to the plot. I should be able to see those details in the picture. Please don't describe it to me.

So in a nutshell

>Lots and lots of CGs
>no padding, don't describe every single little thing that's happening
>move the plot forward
>choices need to matter or at least provide new insight on a situation

If I had it my way, I'd get rid of sprites actually and just make every new dialogue in the vn a single panel of a progressing comic (if that makes sense). So basically, a vn that's all CGs.

In my opinion, movie script writing and vn writing work interchangeably, except with vns, you have to count in multiple endings and multiple routes for the decision making part.

Is using 1st person really that big of a deal?
I'm currently writing in third, and while it isn't that big of a deal to change, I wanted to go and change perspectives near the end (which would be easiest if it was third).
I'm actually a little tired of reading 1st person, but it might just be me.

I can do programming, but doubt most people realise I'm a programmer because they see my art first. There's this weird catch-22 for people with more than one primary skill: if you don't say "hey I can do this" no one will know you can, but if you share the fact that you can do X, Y, and Z (for example, art, programming, and music) generally most people will assume you're bad at all three. So when I advertise my services I only advertise one, usually art.

(I also get the impression that sharing you do multiple things appears... arrogant? Examples backing up that you can actually do those things helps, but I definitely feel sheepish every time I bring up doing multiple things or even when others mention it.)

Also also, typical VNs require barely any programming. A good programmer likes a challenge and most VN coding won't provide that unless you're making your own engine or something. Even an introductory course to computer science is more challenging than making a standard Ren'Py VN IMO.

None of these really sell your skills for a VN score. They're often too simple and the synths too fake-sounding.

The 'calming draft' is a nice sound but not really VN-appropriate to me. Better suited for a puzzle or slow exploration game.

Artist will be harder than programmer. You have to find someone who is really good at thinking in 3D, and can draw things on a lot of layers (Hair on back of head, hair on sides, bangs, etc) and be able to shade in such a way that it doesn't look out of place when it begins to move.

I just looked at this too. Voice acting is terrible.
Demo wasn't impressive either. The backgrounds were great, loved the CG art, but those "animated sprites" were just uncanny and didn't fit well at all.

I do believe it's the case that we go a lot easier on Japanese VAs because we can't understand them, and that we think it's more highbrow than it is because we're having to read instead of just listen.

However, there are a lot of low-rent VAs out there. Anime dubbing is cheap and often shit. We're not even getting big names for video game voice acting, much less big name actors.

Eh, I disagree. It may not be the same but I'm equally picky when it comes to spanish (my mother tongue) and english VA's.

With Japanese VA's I think it's a case of not being able to critizice things like pronunciation so you only focus on the performance (ie it's not HORRIBLE) and whether the voice fits.

Not even lying, I'll buy everything and anything that has Ron Perlman's name on it. For people that are exclusively VAs, Gerardo Reyero's voice is liquid sex and I have put up with some terrible shows because of it.

I wouldn't go that far but I would consider it a plus.

I took notice when Bioware cast Gideon Emery as Fenris because I liked him as Balthier (although my first reaction was 'man, you are REALLY trying to hook the fangirls' but... i was eventually won over to the love of the broody elf) Funny thing is he takes a lot of shitty gigs so he may not even cost that much.

I've also seen a TERRIBLE indie game apparently blow their whole budget on getting Claudia Christian to voice act. It was basically the only reason anyone would ever be interested in the game.

I'll pay up front sometimes for a single image commission, but I'll consider it money that I can afford to lose, because probably a third of the time you're never seeing that money or the art again.

I've never had a commissioner take full price before work started, music, art, or otherwise. Only time partial was required was when the price was pretty high 300$ or so. Best way imo is payment piece by piece, dont give the full res or whatever rights til you're paid.

Paypal covers you, so at most it's just an inconvenience. Do people not know this about paypal? A lot of folks on lemma were whining about being scammed 3k in work. You have 180 days to have them turn in the stuff - if its not there get your money back and tell the artist to work or no pay.

That's not true. If you win the case Paypal will refund you and give the account a black mark. I got scammed $800 by a scam ebay seller. I won the case and paypal dumped it back into my account.

I find the general idea of paying everything up front for work a bit weird, and I do commissions for a living. I generally do half at the sketch stage and half at completion (where a batch would be paid when all the sketches are there and then when all the completed images are there).

It's also true that I've done sketches in the past and then the commissioner has disappeared, so I tend to want half the payment at least so I am partially covered. While it's true that I won't send the full size image to them until I'm paid, it's also true that I will not get my lost time back once it's gone.

Generally, though, there are also developers that I just trust, so I work with whatever split and payment system they prefer.

I haven't played Dysfunctional Systems yet, but Juniper's Knot was hardly high quality unless you're speaking in purely game jam terms. They just threw random tidbits of the fiend's past at you and never did explain why she was imprisoned. However, when you're talking about a story where things are not definitively explained, you look to vague clues of writer intent.

If a young woman who has been hurt deeply in the past clasps the hand of a man about her own age and tells him that he has restored her faith in life, absent other evidence to the contrary, people will tend to read that as her being in love with him. It could just be friendship, it could be asexual love, but the most common interpretation of that is romantic.

Now, write an ancient demon taking the hand of a child and saying that the child has restored their faith in life, and the suggestions come through differently. Of course it could still be romantic, but when you pair a child with someone bitter and jaded, it's more common that you're making a statement about innocence.

None of this proves anything because there are no definitive answers.

If you mean in Japan, then I doubt it, since bishojou games are meant to pander to otaku and most don't want any BL in their games. The gay characters that show up in those games are usually either played for laughs or are seen as perverted or gross by the rest of the cast.

Yuri fans do tend to be touchy about bait-and-switch lesbians though. Things to avoid:
- your girlfriend leaves you in the epilogue for a man
- a character who proclaimed herself a lesbian reveals she's had sex with a man in the past. especially if it's the protagonist and this wasn't known upfront. (Yes, this can be realistic, but it's a touchy issue)
- there are romance options of both genders but the only character who SAYS she's a lesbian is only datable by male characters, wtf

Some people are so obsessive about labels that they have to push out anything that even slightly challenges their stereotypes, or alternately feel the need to make up their own new label in order to more accurately reflect their ~specialness~

So, you get some games that are GxB but the devs complain that they shouldn't be labeled 'otome' because they feel that tag is a disservice to their beautiful plot and well-developed characters, and on the other end you get the whiners who want to declare every game "no longer otome" if it does anything they don't like.

So /evn/, I'm a writer with an idea for a VN. I'd like to think that it's a pretty good idea. But I can't really draw or program. I'd imagine this is a pretty common situation for people in this thread.

Just how fucked am I? I don't exactly have a whole heap of disposable income to spend on hiring people or anything like that. How far can the strength of my writing alone take me? Is actually making a VN something that's realistic for people like me or no? From what I know about the OELVN scene even teams with lots of talented people have trouble getting anything done a lot of time.

If you can actually write a complete script and do the extremely basic following-directions necessary to get a simple VN working (it does not require 'programming' skill to get a game working. To make it work well is different) then you will be in a good position to recruit people to your project.

Having the work actually done and ready is much more appealing than "guys guys i have a great idea".

Artists do exist who will volunteer for a project if it's free, they like the idea, and the writer has actually written something instead of just planning to write something.

Make something small first, preferably a jam, you can usually get an artist on board for that long. If you fail at that then frankly you have higher priority issues to solve than just whether or not you can afford an artist.

Worst case scenario is you learn a lot about how to make a vn. Best case scenario is you hit it off with the artist and form a more permanent partnership. Win/Win

Looks like more vn art theft on Steam Greenlight. This game uses stolen character designs from the yuri series SonoHanabira. The thieves only redrew over the characters faces, which is why they don't seem to match up with the characters bodies. Please help report this project. They can't even argue they got permission to do this, since MangaGamer is partnered with the studio behind those games.

Only AFTER a huge stink was made about it and the original owners were contacted multiple times and it was discovered that they WERE in contact with paprika.

Reddit was useful in raising enough of a stink that those other guys had to issue public statements and stop trying to cover up their asset reuse, at least.

We're not ignoring MarbleSyrup but we've been talking about them stealing art for months and people continue to give them money. We'll keep talking about it, but it may be too far gone to make a difference. With Love Language, no money has been given to them yet and they don't have a fanbase, so if they are crooked we have a better chance of putting an end to them before they get into a position like MS where they can admit to stealing art and no one will care.

For me it was. It hit the right buttons at least without being melodramatic.

You could kinda see tearfest part 1 coming because the story built up to it, but it was done well enough that I wasn't rolling my eyes.

Tearfest part 2 was because I'm a sucker for nice endings[/spoilers]. So I'm biased.

Just finished playing Over The Hills. Wow, I wasn't expecting that. It's really fucking good. Couldn't recommend it more. Reminds me a lot of Dischan's original games. It had a bit of a slow start but as time went on, I just found myself immersed in the story without really thinking about it. Definitely worth playing.

VNDB is used by people who think that its ratings are really a reflection of a vns quality, so a good VNDB page with positive ratings can draw interest to your vn.

If you're going to manipulate the VNDB page of your vn, you should create multiple accounts over a period of a few months and vote on multiple other vns first, then it looks less suspicious when you hype up your own.

What's weird is that the guy who wrote the article summarizes it by saying Sekai Project is doing good work. Witch Boy KS bombed and I have my doubts that the Narcissist one will succeed.
