So I've got a game here in which you very simply use a phone. Right now the controls for it are

I did that because of how the buttons are actually positioned on a phone, but I feel a little conflicted because E is so typically a confirm button. So, do you think it would make more sense/feel better to keep it as it is or switch the functionality of those two keys?

If you're using XML just keep using it, no reason to overhaul your system until you notice your productivity taking a hit. When that happens, I recommend making your own . Really though, if you're using something like C/C++/Java/C# you can make a formatter similar to printf() and use it like this: CreateDialogue(CharacterHandle, "Hello %s, How have things been, %s", player.name(), lambda{ if-statements in here based on player.race() and returns some text like "strange child" });

Maybe that method returns a dialogue object and you can attach audio or character portraits or whatever to it and use it later with a PrintDialogue(DialogueObject) method. You don't even have to hardcode the "Hello %s" text, if you're aiming for multilingual or something you can just pull a string from a databse. It's easy to make your own version of printf that can take strings and integers and it looks and scales way better than XML and will save you headaches in the future.

Like I said though no need if you're not having trouble with XML

I'm assuming you're talking about me when you say Clojuredev since I'm the only other person I've seen with a brown-ish color scheme.
I use JSON for a basic scene and dialog scripting system. I have it set up so I can call clojure functions from the JSON and use results to affect the outcome of the rest of the scene.

I'm really bad at coding, but trying to get better by making a very simple tile-based puzzle game. My goal is to instantiate tile prefabs as a 3d representation of a 2D array. Pic is my code so far. The uncommented Instantiate line works fine to make a 10x10 grid, but the commented Instantiate line where I'm trying to also populate an array gives me an error (Object reference not set to instance of object). Thanks anon, I think your lambda usage suggestion would be much less cumbersome. Nice insight.

For dialogue specific variables wouldn't I need to still store the mapped values somewhere?

As you said, I don't think my dialogue system would be cumbersome(yet) enough to warrant a binary file or anything similar for storage; I'm already multi-threading and using C++.

The most disturbing thing I ever saw reek (aka sourcefam) do was harrass an enginedev who was making a FPS game from the ground up for days on end. He wouldn't stop until the guy just finally left, and then he spent months after still randomly bringing it up to pick on him. He does the same to other devs who have been gone from AGDG for months or weeks. He says he is entitled to this behavior because he's been with AGDG "from the start", which means he's been a legitimate nodev for years now and still has no game to show. This is why "where's your game" sent him off the deep end.

It has exactly 37,801 owners but only 11,377 got it through Steam. The other 26,424 got it on bundles and such.

I was lucky as hell that a lot of bundles wanted my game in when I first started, even when it was in Early Access. I think they're just crazy for pixel art shit. Maybe Aerannis dev should try that..

If its your intent for it to be spooky:
Throw in some atmosphere(fog/clouds) and it should bump it up a notch.
Your lamps throw light too far and even. That level light should be cast around the base and then be extremely dim as it casts further.
Having your trees being entirely lit kills a lot of the spook potential.

You may also consider darkening the sidewalks/curb/headstones.

i use a very beat-up yamaha QY20 and also-very-beat-up casio MT520 for MIDI sounds. the yamaha has a uniquely lo-fi sound since it was made before modern midi specifications or some shit. the one i have won't even sync up with a keyboard so i just sample sounds from it. the casio is just totally fucked up and creepy sounding from some guy's attempted modifications in the past, and i use that for raw sounds to turn into pads and stuff. for bass i mainly use an arturia microbrute analog synth. everything else is samples and i assemble+master everything in audacity since that's what i've always been comfortable using. i used to record straight to a tascam tape 4-track but now i just use that sporadically to distort/soften up things that sound too digital.

Actually learn art. If you can't draw a figure that you can see realistically you'll never draw one stylized competently, and you'll certainly never be able to model it. You have to actually understand anatomy in 3 dimensions before you can model it in 3 dimensions. You can't rely on tracing.

barely any real show-offable progress for this. mostly concept art and getting the questions to shuffle properly. and that works now. I still have to add a few more important things like a quota for how many questions you have to answer, a category selection before you start answering, have the timer stop when the player answers with something. (nothing happens if it reaches zero after the player has input an answer, it just needs to look nice) and whatnot. all very easy

I'm just scared about finishing all the art and animations on time.

This isn't even a 'new to modeling' thing. Professional modelers use orthographic references, because it's by far the best way to work. (especially if they're working in a large studio, where the concepts and models are made by different people).

This isn't about anatomy. If you understood the difference between making 3D models for videogames and making, say, in-pose 3D sculptures, you'd know why you're wrong. Hell, if you understood the difference between 2D and 3D art at all you'd know why you're wrong (especially if you take the 10 seconds required to understand how a perspective, posed reference would be particularly problematic if it's stylized and hand drawn, as is usually the case).

LOD was stupid simple to do. Thanks UE4. I have a feeling of dread that it's only simple on the surface and there's going to be some bullshit gotchas which are gonna jam me up.

More pots. Different materials to visualize lod levels. I feel like I would be fine if I added more edge loops on the lip of the pot for the base lod.
They're roughly ~800 tris, ~600 tris, and ~400 tris respectively. Not that it matters, I just think it's neat.

You can't model anatomy if you don't know anatomy. Period. You learn anatomy from actual anatomy. You cannot argue against this.

Of course you can trace a little, but you can't just trace the front and side views and suddenly the whole mesh just pops into existence with no further input on your part. And considering we're talking about stylized representations the whole tracing thing goes out the window anyways.

A real reference in any pose is far better than no reference. If you have any artistic ability whatsoever and particularly if you've ever actually STUDIED ANATOMY in any form then you will be able to look at a figure and understand how the form exists in space rather than just tracing or copying the lines that you see. That's why any competent artist can draw competent anatomy in various poses without having to look at a reference anymore. Being a 3D artist in no way precludes you from needing to learn anatomy just because you may be working in a T-stance and posing later. Obviously having a reference in T-stance is valuable but you cannot rely on tracing alone.

You also won't know how to rig, pose, or animate anything properly without an understanding of anatomy.

Just learn anatomy.

In the worst case scenario I have 4 linked lists each of which consists of 10 nodes. Each node contains an integer denoting that node's value. I need to iterate over the lists in order to find the most valuable unordered tuple consisting of 1 node from each list. I then need to repeat this process 3 more times with 3 other sets of lists. This is really utterly irrelevant but I'm writing the AI for a wargame. For each piece I'm listing all possible moves which could result in that piece dealing damage to an enemy piece, shielding a friendly piece from an enemy attack, capturing a goal or advancing under cover. I then rank them using an utility heuristic, then prune them via a complex d&c algorithm which would take me ten posts like this one to explain. I'm left with a relatively small number of possibly-optimal combinations. All that is left is to go over all of the options and pick the most promising one, then reevaluate the situation for the remaining pieces. In all honesty 60k combinations is a really small number when you started out in the hundred billions.

Of course none of this matters because my actual question was whether increasing the locality of reference for this data structure would result in a worthwhile increase in performance.

Apparently it happens because the collision shapes failed verification. This could be because they were deemed too small or the vertices were too close. Vertices can also become close under certain rotations or very small scaling. Hope that helps

The principle of locality is a fancy name for the idea that most hardware is optimized to reference the same memory cell multiple times within a short period of time, memory cells physically near the a recently accessed memory cell, and some other more complex things involving branch prediction.

Arrays are guaranteed to have a good locality of reference - all of the cells are adjacent in memory. Nodes may or may not have a good locality of reference depending on how fragmented the memory is. You can try to solve this via memory pools but if the amount of data doesn't vary drastically between the worst case and the best case you might as well just preallocate an array of the maximum size instead of wasting time managing dynamic memory.

Professional modelers never actually come up with the concepts, they just trace from whatever a concept artist gives them.

Sprites in the Unity editor always look a bit shit like that. Once in the build, they come up perfectly fine.
The blue bar is your brake bar, you can hold the screen to slow down but it uses up the bar, refills once you get to a checkpoint.
The black bits are checkpoints, need to do a graphic on them. Each one you touch gives you a score based on how fast you reach it, and each consecutive one gives you a multiplier.
It encourages players to get to the checkpoint as fast as they can, and get as many checkpoints as possible.

Indie means independent, referring to publishing. If a person or company publishes their own game than it's Indie.

Ultimately, it's fine, but some more shade difference between the layers may be a good idea, even if it's only a slight difference. Cause at the moment the layer the character is on looks like it's on the same depth as the one just above it/behind the player. Other than that it looks pretty nice

The character looks like it could use more details though, as they look rather plain compared to the scene.

Long answer, == usually compares one object directly to another, this can cause weirdness with some languages and objects. .equals() compares the fields of the object to ensure the fields are in fact the same, and the object is of the same type, to ensure they are actually equivalent.

use .equals when it's available.

What's a good way to simulate objects that aren't on screen?

Should I have a simulator script that i send objects that aren't on screen to?

My game is a game where you manage a spaceship, most of the game takes place inside of your spaceships, space station, or colony in which it plays like a top down game.

The over world is a 2d top down space screen. however the game is meant to be a simulation world, try to survive on your ship as long as possible until you eventually can get a suitable planet to colonize. At this stage the game will change quite a bit, but i'm not worrying about that now.

There are other spaceships and bases that have to go around doing ship, how should I handle those entities?

It's just that consuming of music in the age of internet has shifted away from buying albums. I literally don't if any of my friends have their favourite albums. Instead of having to listen albums one at a time we can make/find lists on the internet with songs from all over the place. We are not bound to CDs and cassettes anymore.

But, why bother? Get ShareX. Much simpler.

Ah damn, if you were using Unity I would recommend you remove most of your shading and do it through normal mapping instead, but I'm not familiar with UE4's shaders so I can't tell you much about that. Might be worth looking into though, depending on how much lighting you're incorporating into your game.

if the shader can be run and it runs poorly it means you need to write a better shader
if the shader can't be run then you need to set a fallback or it will most likely crash the system it's being run on if it doesn't support that shader version
There is no way to run a shader whose version isn't supported by the system

Unity question. Is there any way to check if a variable has a missing reference? For example a transform being missing when the object is destroyed. Or do I need a callback from that object thats being destroyed?

If you try to do what mount&blade did and model a unique 3d environment for each city they're all going to feel lifeless and weird, but if you just use menus (again, like mount&blade) you can still make it feel like there's lots to do per city

The way I envision it is more of a strategy game. Think Civ or Crusader Kings. You don't actually control the spy or even see what he does, you just plop him next to the city icon and a value goes up/down/whatever.

Doesn't matter. Any power of 2 will work. It depends on how good an artist you are. Go for 64x64 if you have art skills and want to put a lot of detail in your shit. 16x16 is good for simple sprites and tiles. 32x32 is a good midway point and it's what I always use.

the actual reason to use power-of-two tiles is because it's really easy to subdivide up/down
like my game has a 16x16 tile size, but my spikes are 16x4 and my platforms are 16x2 and they both feel like they're still on "the grid"
