I really like the battles in Attila but the campaign felt somehow stale quickly. Also the management f the provinces takes so much time, so that I mostly spend 70% of playing the campaign on the campaignmap.

Campaign feels stale for me because like 90% of the factions are in europe or best served by migrating into europe and it just feels like the same campaign with a different skin each time. Desert kingdoms really helped out in that regard for me.

I quite like the province management though, once you figure out a general build order it's fairly quick and only odd situations force you to spend real amounts of time considering what to do. It could still do with improvement but its a shitload better than the old BUILD ALL THE THINGS methods we had. a few more slots with relatively faster growth and a slight increase in variety would go a long way imo.

I suppose I'm actually on the side of Anthonius and his asshurt slav buddies in a way, I'd love to see more playable factions on that side of the map, not because of muh national pride I'm a bong but because all the campaigns are fighting over the same scraps of the WRE every single time, because the vast majority of the factions available at the moment are supposed to go to Europe. Hell it might even help the balance around the ERE if the floater states around it actually had a roster to fight off the nomands with instead of recycled germanic shit.

The Problem is, while having so many factions to choose, they all feel incredibly samey.

Every barbarian faction and the viking forefathers factions feels alike and are situated on the same spot next to each other.

The West or East Roman Empire, while providing some difficulty, forces you to play as a giant empire, which gets incredibly tedious fast. Defending the same townmaplayouts against the same enemies on and on and on and on, with the same garrison. And I am forced to play every single town battle, since I want to keep the empire together.

Sassanids, which are way to easy and boring.

Desert Factions which are actually a breath of fresh air.

That makes like a total of 4 factiontypes, excluding the huns, and they campaing is structured to feel unhealthily boring and formulaic. And on top of that the AI Razes every province to make the campaign impossible to play past turn 40 or something.

The Ebdanians start out pretty mediocre but get pretty fun once you get your higher tier stuff like Kerns and Gallowglasses. Kerns, Chosen Raiders and Rigdamhna all have great armor and good RoF so you should be able to out skirmish any continental shits you raid. Just keep in mind your one melee cav choice is average and that the generic celtic spear units are hot trash.

Nothing, But there's nothing to be gained by boycotting it or whatever, if every single total war and warhammer fan boycotted the game because of Segas shitty practices do you know what would happen? TW series abandoned, CA possibly dissolved Sega goes completely untouched and PR spins all the negative backlash onto CA. It's fucking cruel, unfair and bullshit. It's like politicians voting through their own fucking pay rises while sacking the lower level staff who actually run things claiming it's all for the greater good, the game is rigged from the start and there is no winning for anyone but the rich cunts at the top, only losing a little less harshly. yeah as I've said I've given up aswell. I still do my "protest" but I know it's futile. I'll still keep it up though since I believe it's the right thing to do. I'll get the games 6months to a year later since I still love this franchise and you guys are free to do whatever you want.

Hopefully though if enough people refused to accept this and Sega buried the ip another company would create a similar game to rival Total war and we'd get some healthy competiton. That's my hope

It's really not, you're not going to pay more by preordering since the extra content comes free, people that don't preorder are the same people that wait for sales, since there is no reason too now with refunds.

The only reason not to preorder in the past was because of the lack of steam refunds, I'm not even talking about before steam, because then it wasn't a problem preordering regardless of the quality since you could always refund in retail, the "preorder is bad" rethoric started because of steam and its anti consumer practices, why publishers keep up the bonuses after refunds are a thing and they can't con people on steam with bad quality products? Who knows, maybe they like to show results at shareholders meetings.

Germans are pretty good. Go Ostrogoths, Franks, or Suebi.

Celts are alright. Their units can deploy anywhere, so they are made for ambushes and skirmishing tactics. I personally prefer Ebdanians, but I would say Picts are probably superior.

My entire plan hinges on the right flank. If the AI does what it usually does, it will send most of it's melee cavalry to my right flank, so I'm making sure this engagement is quick and decisive. Usually people have less because for some reason in the new games CA think nations wouldn't want to trade, when actually trade was something every nation did even with enemies half the time. I suppose you could say it represents a formal agreement to trade but even then i don't see why nations would just decline because they dislike you a bit.

Regardless your economy will suffer if your trade gets fucked up so you better have another reliable income.

Against other barbars, my Spear Warband and Noble Spears do just fine, but I did have one encounter with some units of Greek hoplites, and basic Spears are just not even in the same league, even after 4 chevs of experience and a weapon upgrade. It got added like 2 test versions ago and has EB BarBar-tier economics loosing ~16k gold/turn and you start at war with Rome, their Rebel Faction and Carthage but are neutral with the "normal" rebels and allied to pretty much everything east of you

Probably more though, Attila feels more polished than Rome II even after all the updates. Not saying it's bad or anything, it's just as engrossing if not more with the right mods.

I think it's acceptable, so long as they're true to Warhammer, since each mayor faction will have a completely unique roster, and should alone have more variety than some other games have as a whole.

So far, it's just seems like a really shitty choice to make the iconic chaos faction dlc. I don't even wanna play as them I wanna play tomb kings and Lizardmen, but it seems like a bad choice considering how much other people like them.

Hmmm. hadn't noticed that. Well, the full roster for the Chaos Warriors seems really godless, no units that seem easily identifying with any of the Chaos deities. It's a level of pre-order bullshit that's beyond what I've seen for any other game I've cared about.

It's a faction that will form 1/5 of the playable game upon release, and be highly distinct from the others, unlike barbarnigger 12.0 for Attila. And yeah, you can get a refund on preorder, but what if you only get into the game after release? Then you have to pay for some shit that was developed long before the game was ever released, on top of the base game.

Personally, I refuse to support this kind of shit, and I'll actually hold off until a major sale because of it. I can understand someone giving in because they just can't wait, but I don't see how anyone could look at this as anything but a completely fucking cancerous practice.

Devs are given a due date, and the game is handed over at that time. The due date is usually months away from the release date, so instead of the giving them down time, publishers usually have them start developing dlc content, then it's up to the publisher to decided what kind of DLC content. The Chaos Warriors aren't being rip out of the game, they'll be developed after the game is finished, the issue is that SEGA is shit and will force you to either pre-order or pay for it.

Look at 2k and Firaxis, 2k doesn't bother Firaxis much, which is why Firaxis did day one FLC for shit like CiV.

It was a struggle at first but i was slowy removing rome, then cartage and nova carthago showed up and the three of us commenced the beatings, rome managed to kick nova carthago out of italy, but it was too little too late, rome has been reduced to a city and several partial stacks , itally is now divided between me and carthage, though a full syracuse stack, enemy to both me and rome just landed near by, and since carthage is already besieging the last of the romans, I'm assuming the stack will come after me

People keep saying that there should be a company that competes with CA to lead to better TW games, but the reason rivals don't really exist is that TW games are expensive to make, difficult to make, and at the end of the day, they're pretty niche in demand. This is one of the most tense battles I've ever fought.

I managed to route the enemy at one chokepoint, and about half of their troops are down.

the people who buy unit packs are retards anyway. The worst part about Paradox DLC is that they charge ~20$ for each major expansion. Everything else is either music or unit packs that make your sprites slightly different if you actually use unit models.

I'd be fine with Total War DLC if it was more like what they did with CK2 and HOI3, coming out with full fledged expansions that they worked on after release, not locking 75%+ of the game's units and factions behind dlc on release

CA's proper DLCs are expansions. The rest just make some factions playable, that it. And you can do that with a mod. In fact you can make all the factions in the game playable with mods.

If the expansions you mean are the campaign expansions I don't really mind those, since they're typically even an expansion of an already fleshed out faction (Romans in Attila) but from what I understand the other factions that are locked by DLC like burgundians or whatever and their like are broken in most features if you just unlock them

With the exception of the scummy preorder DLC factions though, the others are legitimately developed after the games release, the AI still gets to use them against you and you really don't need to buy them unless you actually give a shit about playing those factions and they usually release a FLC faction along with the DLC.

Like I personally have only got the desert kingdoms for Attila because I just didn't give a shit about the other two post release faction packs and cared even less for nordics. It's obviously not a system that's going to please everyone and everything being free on release would sure as hell be better but fuck it's still better than the shit EA, Ubisoft and Paradox pull to name but a few.

This, people have forgotten what an expansion or additional content used to it. It was always made afterwards, since before steam and downloaded games. We loved expansions. Now if a game does it they're crucified, even though it's made afterwards so its not cut content.

How do I fight Phalanx in RTW using Phalanx? My full Phalanx stack just got wreck by a single unit of Phalanx and cavalry.

Try to soften them up before they reach your own pikes, sword infantry will cut them down if you hit them in the flank also, there should be falx mercs around there, theyll slaughter a phalanx from the rear. Your problem is that pikes have low attack and are shit at flanking. You want shock infantry/cavalry to do the flanking

How do you play Huns? I've got half a dozen Attila campaigns under my belt, all divine triumphs. Every so often I stop and decide to give the Huns another shot, but I always end up losing before Attila comes of age. Trying to cope with the rivalry debuff means my hordes are split up, and one of them inevitably gets pinned down by agents for two turns as four enemy stacks appear from the fog and kill it. I lose a quarter of my economy and dozens of turns of growth, and it spirals downwards.

How the fuck are you supposed to manage? Do you just horsefucker your way to victory with T1 horse archers so you don't need to worry about spending food on upgraded units?

The thing I don't get is replenishment. You need to be encamped, which means you can't move and can't escape from enemy stacks. If you try to run, they just chase you down and you're forced to fight understrength every single time.

The entire point of hoplites is to stand still and not die, wearing you down until you break. Luckily they don't 'kill back', so to speak. What you need to do is out-wear them, or break them. So charge a unit from the front. Wait a couple of minutes until they're exhausted, then charge into their rears. It'll take some time, but they'll eventually break.

No, that's a myth. It's another case of someone writing a book and everyone taking it as gospel, spreading the idea around because it sounds cool, before people get the chance to criticize it.

Stirrups were not a game changer, stirrups did not enable proper charges, cavalry was able to do heavy charges well before stirrups. There are many more ways to secure yourself onto a horse than stirrups. In fact, stirrups are not the best way to secure yourself onto a horse, they're actually there to help with balance. The cavalry which benefits most from stirrups is not heavy cavalry but light skirmishing cavalry which needs to stand up on the horse.

The concept is that if your feet are in the stirrup loops when your lance impacts you will not be vaulted off the horse. This doesn't make sense as stirrups will not prevent you from moving backwards, they do not block your movement to the behind, you can slip out of them quite if pushed backwards. They're also suspended on a rope or strap, if you get pushed back or up the rope will simply move it won't hold you in place.

But you're going to say "Then why were knights so much more effective at charges than in antiquity". Well first of all i don't know how you can claim that a medieval knight was more devastating than say a Parthian heavy Cataphract, it's not like we have accurate data comparing the charge impacts. But if there's any reason knights became more effective at charges, it's for a few reasons. Firstly the horses of the middle ages were much larger and stronger than before, (except probably the Persian Nisean horses), but also the knight used new lance couching techniques which made it more stable. The knight also continually trained in the art of charges.

As far as I can tell it's because they have a lot of unit mass acting as a hidden charge bonus letting them completely shatter formations and dealing extreme damage on the charge. Hell in my Himyar campaign I was using the Himyarite shotelei versions with a smaller charge bonus and seeing them kill over 100 heavy infantry on the charge impact alone with alarming regularity, which is something their visible stats alone wouldn't let them do.

But really though when you look at the bigger picture it's not that unusual. Software packages have basically followed the same model in every industry but games for over a decade now. It's not unusual to buy a piece of software and have certain features locked behind a pay-wall in other industries. In facts it's taken as standard.

The games industry is really just playing catch up in that regard.

Pre-orders came from when you had physical releases. Where there was a real chance if you went to buy day one, they'd most likely have run out.

Pre-orders make no sense for digital releases and I have no idea why it's even allowed on digital stores like Steam. But as for pre-order incentives, if you planned to get the game Day 1, you have lost nothing by pre-ordering. For the rest of us that planned to get it a few months later, then yea, I guess that sucks.

Youre fucking dumb thats the default halfsword position you hold it like youre two-handing a polearm with the point facing out, you grip the blade for leverage and parry, how else do you think they used them without a shield? The whole point of halfswording is a defensive stance that can be transitioned into a grapple. There is a technique in halfswording where you flip the sword and hit with the hilt but that was a finishing move sort of deal you didnt walk around with the sword backwards

This isn't a fair criticism. The game doesn't have a timeline so there are no families, it's more about special characters and heroes, who have their own individual quests, items and development. It's a new system geared to this game.

This is so stupid, I don't mean to be rude but how can people say the pre-warscape engine is better with an obvious flaw like this: You units don't attack the enemy if you tell them to walk behind them instead of attack.

In Rome 2 I'm so used to just tell my Phalanx to move behind the enemy line that I didn't realize it doesn't work like that in RTW. If I don't click them to attack the enemy, they'll just walk straight into them an die, withouta ttacking. Even horses work like that, if I send my horsemen behind archers, they won't kill the archers nor they will knockback them.

This is so stupid. Well, now I'm killing hoplites without problem, it's still stupid though because just clicking to attack breaks formation to attack the smaller mob that has the flag.

They could easily make up for it. All they have to do is give out Chaos for free one or two months after the game comes out. Just make gamers wait a little longer if they don't pre-order. No harm is done then.

They can even make a video of all of the angry comments, then announce that Chaos will be $30 after launch for non-pre-orders, wait for the anger to seep in the consumer, then have the two hosts laugh and say that it'll be free for everyone, just a little longer if you don't pre-order.

You're not supposed to move your guys to the opposite side of the enemy unit, you just make them move through their unit slowly via collision detection, make them attack, move them again when they blob up, ad nausem.

It doesn't work from the front, but when you do it from the sides or rear, it fucks the phalanx formation up and usually causes it to blob out. I really don't know why your guys would be getting slaughtered moving through a unit, I've never seen that happen before. Do what i do and just launch from the mod manager so it creates the user script of your mods, then go to the scripts folder and make sure the newly created user script is set to read only.

I come back to Attila after not playing for a couple of months and every single faction got the same units with a few variants. I mean, fuck. They even removed the Godansmen from the Langobards and replaced them with some shitty tier 2 berserkers.

Surprise fucking surprise, homogeneous armies aren't fun to play with. Having factions being specialized is what makes them unique and fun to play.

I mean, what the fuck is this? They remove unique units just to replace them with generic ones shared between several factions.

It is fairly easy for you to take the VMDs of units from FOTE and assign them to vanilla units. Just delete all the db tables and probably the text tables to (To get rid of the names), keep the unit cards and VMDs and load those with your own edited pack file with a unit_variant db table. You may need to create or edit certain VMDs to get what you want (say, heavy godansmen berserkers with a 2h axe, or Hetairea Guard) but it's fairly easy to do if you follow the tutorials. Just extract all the VMDs into your attila folder so that the toolkit TWEAK picks up on the VMDs. Then go in, change weapons or armor and so on around and you'll be good to go.

Generally with roster designs I tried to follow the inspiration and influence of history without slavish imitation. However, short of completely fabricated units you inevitably end up with a lot of Germans fighting/looking the same. It would much be like trying to make sure every Iranian faction had highly unique units.

Herculaini Seniores were an elite palace guard.
Langobardian Spatharii Sacer-Comitatorum is Latin and clearly means something like Langoboard Sword Retainers which is a historical unit, Langobard men, using the common migration period sword, serving under lords and nobles.

Sorry, I am not normally negative but people like him infuriate me. Why is he complaining about fantasy units being removed in a mod that clearly is about historical authenticity? That's so dumb. But not only is it dumb but it negatively affects the mods development because if it happens enough FotE will cave and start adding in bullshit units and then we can't have comfy historical mods for people don't need to see 30 EPIC units to feel like they're having fun.

It's been a long day so I am too worn out to write it tonight I think, but tomorrow I will try and re-write a guide on how to isolate just FOTE's textures and unit cards and what you'd need to do to make your own personal mod to use them with vanilla units.

I know a lot of people like them but don't like the gameplay/roster changes, and I'm happier seeing my cobbled together Romans than the rather shoddy vanilla ones. I haven't done a "just the visuals" pack because while anyone can do it, it's long and tedious. Specifically: their carried projectile needs to match their stat's projectile (and I gave most romans and most german infantry some kind of projectile while CA didn't give all the romans thrown projectiles, there are certain vanilla units which have no fote parallel and would need to be made brand new (which could be as simple as "take Sacer Comitati Spatharii and remove the sword and shield and replace with 2h axe, or as complex as building from scratch), and I feel like if I were to try and do a "just visuals" it'd end up becoming its own separate mod as I try and not half-ass it but match stuff to CA's designs.

I wish CA had done rosters more like Rome 2's - as abhorrent as the release was, the rosters were rather solidly done. If it was like that I could just focus singlemindedly on VMDs, not stats.

The economy is booming, now that my Italian building projects have really taken off, and we've lost most of our corruption penalties after losing most of our cities. However, the Angles invaded Hispania.

I had to fight the same battle for Toletum twice because the game fucked up after the first one. The battle was originally a valiant defeat, but somehow half-assing it the second time got me a crushing victory, that annihilated the entire Angle army.

I was actually looking forward to removing proto-cockroaches from Spain, so I used saveparser to double the poor fucks gold. Hopefully they can rebuild in time to compete with the Hispanian rebel faction over the scraps of Iberia.

So I got Attila today... a little bit regretting it, but I really wanted to play WRE. Just seemed like a fun concept, and Rome could actually be a challenge to play.

Well fucking right it's a challenge. On my second attempt and holy shit. Decided on a scorched earth campaign. I burned Europe to the ground in one turn. Disbanded all of my armies and generals save two. Only Italia remains. I have enough money to buy any barbarian ally I want, start any war I want, and complete rebuild my infrastructure from the ground up.

Second turn I was facing like -340ish order in settlements. Thank god it maxes at 100. Rebellions in every province, civil war. Armies everywhere. Quick movements let me quell the rebellions and now I am looking at a promising start. Hard part is going to be building a thriving economy again, but I'm on turn 8 and I'm pulling 3000+ a turn and food is in the hundreds. So far, so good.

Look at your provinces. You probably got some churches at them, and churches cost money (unless you get that Christianity mod). If they're level 2, knock 'em down to 1. Unless you want to convert to another religion, like Greek Christianity, Roman Paganism, or something else like Zoroastrianism.

If you ever need quick cash, look at your provinces and see what level your town/city is. Knocking the city/town down to level 1 does give you some quick cash. Don't worry about upgrading cities/towns beyond level 2, though. Ain't really worth it.

Jewish Himyar are undisputed masters of heavy infantry in the eastern half of the map with equally heavy cav in the form of camels, you have a pretty massive variety in how you can use your roster and only really fall flat in spearmen, but who the fuck cares when your swordsmen are borderline unkillable. Pagan Himyar are significantly less brute force in their front line but in exchange are a lot more flexible with their cav and skirmishing and can use tactics beyond smashing into the enemy frontline and trampling them underfoot.

Not played much of the other factions because I kinda burned out on Attila with two back to back Himyar games and a VH WRE game, but I hear they mostly share the wide roster but with enough differences to avoid sameyness.

Pictured, not even top tier Himyar troops absolutely wrecking shit.
