Maybe he is just bad.
Making realistic textures is extremely easy compared to cartoony ones. In the formet you go to textures.com, grab a texture, edit it a bit and you are good to go. For cartoon you have to actually draw it.

he probably just didn't know how to make a cartoonish texture. it's a lot easier to do photo stuff. or he was just uninterested. it's hard to imagine someone getting angry over that though.

What is degrading about being nude?
Nudity doesn't necessarily need to be sexual objectification.
Maybe the real problem is that people feel uncomfortable with nudity because It's the human body in its purest and most vulnerable form, making them feel weak when they look at it.

Yes with quantum algorithms and neural networks anything is possible, look at DF it's generating history why not a deep story too. Even if you worked on it your whole life you wouldn't be close to finishing it tho.

I'm just lurking, but I think I know what's going on with this artist. Sounds like the type of guy who wants to make super flashy extreem HD textures for his realistic, mature, manly-man navy seals sniper simulation dream game. He thinks "cartoony" means slightly raising color saturation levels on his existing texture because that should be good enough for baby cartoon games.

You really have to spoonfeed instructions and show him examples of what kind of cartoony style you want, so he can either adapt or admit he's not interested in creating that sort of thing.

People really use anything, from Python to Java to C to Assembly, a quick look at random github projects will show you that.

That's at least true of personal projects, companies stick to what they have been using for the past decade: C++, Java, etc

i haven't devd in so long because i started a game over a year ago, and now its been in dev for so long i cant stand to release it as it is and make no money, i know its not got enough content to be that good. at the same time i cant bring myself to toil on it any longer.

i guess i should just write it off as a mistake and wrap it up? wat do.. the fact that its still haunting me on my pc unreleased is just really draining my motivation. if i had a fresh slate i could start on a smaller scope game and make something im happy to work on again.

its called still not dead. the problem is i started it as a shitty arcade survival game, then tried to adapt it into a roguelite and frankly i had no idea where the design was going, so iv made like 33 unique items, but it only has 2 enemies and 1 location, and the whole thing is procedural generated.

im just way too sick of working on it. im tempted to delete it. i guess i will just release it as soon as i can, at least its playable, and charge some menial $3 or something..

id be very very happy to get it behind me so i can get to work on something smaller with a real focus, a start and end point to development again. and something where i am only coding, not doing everything. i guess i learnt a lot of lessons from this and it might make a few bucks, so its not a total write off..

Why do people rely on this? Procedural generation is supposed to help you get tediously designed stuff out of the way faster in a way that still benefits the game, not so you can be lazy and forego design altogether

You can always revise your scope.

It may be a hopeless idea though, you can salvage some projects but others are best abandoned.

I can no longer keep track of my dead games, I have 2-3 semi-active ones. One I haven't touched for 1.5 months but it's 2 years old and It's not the first time I've been this long off it.

It's Rogue Legacy but your character gains beneficial/negative traits (for example, Crippled, which makes you move slower) and passes some of them on to your heir. Your character ages as you progress and tends to have an heir 30-35 years of age, with some variation. If you die before you have an heir, it's game over.

Maybe there could be some breeding minigame where you can weed out bad traits by choosing your mate, but that feels like it would disrupt the gameplay too much.

It works man, don't worry. I just don't like the language and while all languages have stupid shit, they way GML seems to be structured makes for very poor code organization. The best you can hope for is functions, and the objects themselves don't really work as well as I'd like for code reuse. Any midsized project probably turns into a clusterfuck impossible to maintain.

My autistic self likes easy to organize, manage, and maintain code and it doesn't seem like GML will work well in that department.

I'm doing it in my spare time, and so far I've produced nothing but garbage.
Yeah, it is not easy.
Maybe I would be more successful if I just decided in what way I want to draw things.
First I decided to go 3D only, and tried to learn how to use Blender. It was so-so, but after losing interest on 3D models I decided to learn abstract vector art. Lost interest after a while too. I went from abstract vector art to pixel art, then I abandoned it all for traditional handmade art. Did some shitty drawings, but boredom strikes again. Went back to digital art and tried to mix it up by scanning my bad drawings and using shit like Gimp(fuck that garbage of a software, by the way) and Inkscape to modify them, but that wasn't going anywhere. Ended up buying a wacom tablet and currently I'm trying to study anatomy and the style of different artists. I think my greatest problem appears when I have to color a drawing. I have zero idea how to color anything I draw, and all my attempts have been unsuccessful. I keep reading tutorial after tutorial, watching video after video, but I feel like I'm going nowhere. Even if I ever manage to draw anything nice I doubt I'll be capable of giving a nice color to it. I simply cannot visualize stuff like shading and gradients inside my head.

Stop worrying about coloring, for one. You don't need to know color theory to learn how to shade objects, you need to learn how shadows and shadow-casting objects work, and how light interacts with objects of differing textures. You learn that, learn how to shade in black and white and coloring will come naturally just by fucking around with a basic palette.

Don't even focus on shading though, you need to work on anatomy above all, don't think about shading or that stuff until you've got anatomy on lock

Not him, but I've been getting some results by trying to understand 3d forms. An issue I had with 99% of the guides and books I found is that they just drop you right to drawing shit and you don't even know how or why.

It's like a programmer saying "Yeah guys, you just create a class to inherit from. But don't forget to value composition over inheritance. Look, in this part I apply an interface and..." to some faggot that barely got through his first Hello World program.

Instead of that, just doing simple shit like lines, ellipses, contour lines, boxes, and stuff like has been making me able to understand how shit actually is represented in 3d and why.

Yes. I'm too tired right now to be honest. I had basic movement changing the X variable in the object, but the moment I added physics so the player can fall after jumping, it stopped working. I tried another way but that was the result.

It's foolish to use physics unless your game is a "physics game". It would serve you better to learn to overcome challenges like coding a jump without physics, because if you intend to be a coder you will face much more challenging obstacles if you make anything of any significant complexity.

Sangfroid has some stuff you could rip off, as does Trapt. The large beartraps give me sort of a (very loose) Silent Hill vibe, so maybe you could look to those games for inspiration as well.

Don't like the menu font, but the title font is nice (kerning is a bit weird though). Are you sure you have the rights to the background?
Also not a fan of the black bars or their shadows. Especially since they're complete black, and the space image for your background has a washed-out look. The difference in saturation is weird.

You shouldn't have expected it to 'just work'. You either program your controller around the physics engine, or separately. The physics engine will try to control all of the object's behaviour by default, and unless you know exactly how you're supposed to interact with that / what to disable, you're gonna have a bad time.

I tried to play your game. I ended up alt f4ing about 20 minutes in due to the forced, boring cut scenes, excess cringe worthy text and drawings.

Combat was boring and too simplistic. Megaman was released in 1987, you can dare to dream bigger. I'm sure later in the game combat would get marginally better via upgrades or guns but the painful, forced cut scenes and text killed it.

if your game works well without it and it's not above all frustrating to play due to the lack of a ui, then you're fine. ui is just a way to graphically convey important information to the player, so as long as the important information is being conveyed in other ways, a ui is unnecessary.

Granted I'm a CS major so I've already popped my coding cherry, but really it's not that complicated it's just a matter of keeping track of what things are and knowing why they do what they do and a lot of good tutorial people do a good job of explaining stuff as they type. Really if you marathoned the videos it should take you a weekend to make a really shitty basic game like pong. Actually pong can be done in an hour probably.

Also, a little piece of advice: Don't fuck up and mix sampling methods if you're rotating sprites. Terraria does this by not point sampling for a few enemies and weapons, and as a result, those specific enemies and weapons look like shit.

This happens when your actual resolution is higher than the regular 'pixel' resolution you're using (a.k.a. if you're using a 4x4 pixel size, as is the case for that image).
Obviously this doesn't happen much in super mario world, because in super mario world, the 'grid' scale is literally just pixels.
However, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a simultaneously scaled and rotated sprite that DOES do this in the game.

I only care about false low resolution, if you can only draw low-res keep the game low-res.
All those techniques looks acceptable on the SNES because the resolution is like 224p, but when you're doing it at 1080p with filters it's really ugly when you go off the grid.

Double checked, and this really is the case; look at when you kill ludwig (and probably most other bosss), for and you will see their sprites simultaneously overscaled and rotated in the death animation.

yeah, i think most of the blood is a mesh with an animated texture. makes me wonder if there's a corresponding animated normal map, or if the normal map movement which can be seen is something simpler like just a normal map panning or something. i've made some kind of neat mesh blood effects before, just using texture panning in one direction with UVs that were stretched to make certain parts look like they're moving faster/slower, and alpha based on the texture multiplied by the vertex color.

From the screenshot they posted, you can tell they're definitely particles. They use a ton of different blood splatter sprites with normalmaps and specularity, and probably use a pretty complicated emitter setup, but they're still particles.

there are a lot of particles among it, but i'm pretty sure they use meshes with animated textures too. in game when you attack a guy the blood spray can get pretty big and long (even distorted at times) depending on how you attack them, and it can be pretty obvious that there's an animation on a static mesh. if the enemy moves a lot once they're hit you can also see the mesh move with them, but not the other blood particles

Hey, digital production is a means to creating music from scratch, but working with a computer lends itself to making cool sounds and making things sound good more readily than it does to capturing improvised melody. Specifically I mean working with a mouse. You can theoretically click the notes into a piano roll and you have your music but my experience is that this process uses a completely different part of the brain as "imagining melodies" does and so it's almost impossible to do at the same time, or at least anything of any scope or complexity.

Basically what I'm getting to is that for what you're asking you need to learn an instrument. That's the human interface between melodies in the brain and bringing melodies into the real world. Learning to sing is an option if you're disposed to that. Then you would need a way to capture your performance. But ideally if you want to create computer-based music, just learn piano, as with a MIDI keyboard you can very easily play and record notes into your music software and then build whole tracks around that.

Skill with an instrument will allow you to express yourself musically. Skill with production will allow you to make your music sound "polished" and detailed.

If you're really serious about getting into music making I'd suggest investing in a MIDI keyboard and the $100 version of FL Studio (or get the pricier versions if you can afford it). Learn the basics of the software and laying down some melodies is not hard at all. And even if you can't "play" piano, you're likely to still get better results just experimenting with hitting keys than you are doing the same with a computer mouse.

I see what you mean for clothing, sure. I'm sure there's a reasonable way to make clothes stretch a bit to accommodate different proportions on the same girl though.

There are a lot of games where you can play dress up and quite a few where you can "build" girls with sliders and stuff. But there aren't many (or any??) games where you're presented with girls with their own traits and you can gradually work to modify them how you like through gameplay (there are those harem games but they're mostly menus with no animations). It could be quite a compelling form of gameplay and progression. It lends itself to some plot and dialog too. That is my suggestion to you.

Of course people will download your game regardless just to see some monster girl doinking animations but that's unlikely to keep people "playing" for long.

Yeah I see what you mean. That's why I'm building the game as a sandbox hybrid.
After I'm done with the first 3 days of the story I'm gonna build a town area on the island and focus on adding random stuff to do. I only intend on finishing the "story mode" until very late into development.
I actually have most of the basic systems ready, so it's just a matter of start adding features.
Clothes is the one thing I want to stay away from at the moment though. Skinning clothes is a nightmare.

Apparently I was being melodramatic last week about how it was the end of the world and I had to start over. I've found out problems are easier if you ignore them. This is definitely not something that will bite me in the ass later. Anyway, have some toy cars destroying shadows. I got lazy this time and didn't make a sprite sheet for carrying the car but I'll do that later, I just really wanted to get something functional done for once after facerolling the keyboard for 2 weeks trying to figure out how light management works. I'm thinking of either just having really simple non-complex rooms that would only ever use one source of light at a time to keep it simple. Or just have 2-3 copies of the same object with numbers added to the ends of the names as a cop-out approach of taking responsibility for light sources.

I like abstractions because they make code more manageable. It feels good to make something that requires like 50 lines of code and several different function calls into a class that takes care of shit automatically. So instead of a bunch of ugly calls i can just say "object x do y"

man what the hell, I guess I can share a bit since it's downtime here at agdg right now.

Basically the story is a group of terrorists are holding a research university hostage during a military visit to test a new form of technology. The protagonist is sent to find what that tech is and rescue the students and researchers.

the sting of the story is the terrorist and the protagonist is tied up to the concept of dimension identity (it's individuals who are unique across all parallel universes and capable of dimension walking). The new tech is related to this concept without spoiling. Obviously the story and the world building is a bit more complex than that, this is just the gist.

Trying to create a rogue-legacy kinda game where you spawn with 3 other players in the same dungeon, and the goal is to complete the level as the first player.

Finally had a breakthrough with the algorithm, it now supports variable sized rooms. Now I just have to make the actual prebuild-levels, enemies, props, etc.

PROGRESS:
Casting monsters now have visible cast times, in which you can avoid being hit by extreme bullshit by either killing them quickly or fucking off.

Cast times will generally be shorter than this but I just got it working.
