I made a mod for an LP on another site based upon playing a game of Total War: Attila and then carrying that on in CK2, making up some stuff for the 300-year gap between the two games.

I was playing as the Ostrogoths in Attila, ended up settling in Gaul.

Not necessarily. It's common misconception that Russians just continued to throw soldiers away during WW2. While that was the case for 1941 and much of 1942 by 1943 even the USSR was starting to run out of manpower and Russians had to actually start conserving manpower and not just throwing their men at the enemy.

Was playing US D-Day scenario, defeated Germany and partitioned Europe. But, the Soviets chose to invade. Switched to Haiti, now I'm watching the war. The ahistorical countries liberated by me are neutral, so combat is restricted to the German border, were it has since been stagnated, like WW1 all over again.

Once you have fucking rail you should be able to supply UNLIMITED amounts of troops in an area

Jesus, I can't handle the micro necessary to fight a war Constantly watching attrition for everyone, watching the borders so one of my armies doesn't get sniped by a 100 stack of an enemies, etc etc

I guess that's to prevent early game cheezing? Tbh changing capital should be entirely tied to POPs, since Victoria 2 is basically the only game that can actually simulate the drawbacks of changing your capital beyond inflicting bunch of negative mana modifiers on the player. Changing your capital should piss of your populace, increase their militancy, further increase the militancy of any upper class POPs living in the capital and, depending on from where to where the capital is going and if the change favors one culture over another, piss off the members of the culture that are losing the capital.

I agree in general with the idea that the supply system should be more complex but not that you should be able to supply UNLIMITED amount of soldiers in an area. For one thing, supplying infinite amount of soldiers would require infinite amounts of food, ammunition, small arms etc which is obviously impossible. Then just because rail network exists doesn't mean it's perfect - USSR had problems supplying the far east during WW2 well after the 19th century ended. Ideally there would be things like carry weight and speed of travel but at least the second one is impossible since the games aren't real real time but more pseudo turn based with each day being a turn and also the smallest unit of time in the game.

Capital is the center of political power and also the place where you can potentially get involved with the government or benefit from it. Do you think Victorian London grew to over a million people willy nilly? No an English city grew to over a million because of England's power in the world but it was LONDON specifically that grew because of whole range of benefits to living in the capital offers. Changing the capital removes those benefits and pisses off everyone that came to the capital because it's capital and especially the upper class who had a good chance of influencing politics (again, British aristocracy had a country house and London house for a reason). Or, for a modern example, a huge part of Brussel's economy is based on the fact that it's the de facto (but not de jure) capital of the European Union, various organizations, groups, parties and individuals that are based in the city are based there because it's the de facto capital of the EU. If EU moved every single institution to, I don't know, Berlin, do you really think people of Brussels would be happy? There's a lot of power to be had in a capital and a lot of power in loving in the capital.

Why wouldn't you mobilize? I'd rather throw 100.000 poor farmers that aren't useful members of industrial society (read: craftsmen and clerks) instead of 1,000 good, skilled soldiers.

There's literally no reason not to mobilize. Why would you kill your valuable soldiers that are 3-5% of your population when you could kill your peasants that are 80% of your population? They fight exactly the same either way.

Who cares about industry if you can crush all your opponents? If you're wealthy but with a weak army you'll be crushed and subjugated but if you have powerful army you'll rise to the top and then, once there, you can become top tier industrial power a la Prussia.

Score in Vicky has a practical gameplay purpose, though. Your ranking determines your status (gp, sp, civ) which influences what you can and can't do and score also limits or allows your economy being import reliant.

I don't give a shit about score in EU4 since it's pointless and only for super tryhards but in Vicky's it's important.

Around 70, MOT has to break through their lines first, and my hands are full trying to keep the frontline secure.

I didn't expect the Soviets to die so easily, and my allies to be so incompetent, since I have experience of AI doing sometimes some pretty ballsy moves. I thought I'd secure the sea and air superiority, maybe do the naval invasion since AI avoids it like a plague. I've killed close to 2 million Germans already, destroyed completely at least 50 divisions, but now that the Ostfront reinforcements have come I'm probably fucked.

First you have some kind of negotiation between the allies along the lines of "would you join this war?" instead of a declaration of war and then calling your allies like it works now. This could prevent some stupid ass AI wars and stuff like that. You could also perhaps decide on war goals and such beforehand, similar to the crisis CB offer in Victoria 2.

Then you actual declare the war and call your allies the way it works now. However you should still technically be able to deny the invitation at this point so you can be a perfidious cunt.

For one thing that's the fielding potential of the ENTIRE Africa, in order for Africa to field that army the entire (extremely volatile continent full of ethnicities that hate each other's guts) would have to be united under one state and the head of that one state would have to be able to exercise real control over it. For another, since Africa's current overall population is about a 1,000,000,000 that 650M is total war shit is completely desperate enemy wants to genodice all of us sort of scenario. And WW1 era Europe mobilized at most about 60,000,000 men which is less than 10% of the people in the proposed African army. Also keep in mind that that was in Europe, a continent with probably the best infrastructure of every kind (including transport and storage) in the world and that they weren't all concentrated in one place.

I learned by playing along with somebody doing a lets play doing an episode a day for a fair while while looking up stuff on the wiki and forums. Don't expect to read one guide/watch a video and understand the game, you have to look at a lot of different stuff/tinker around in the game and it is hard to get through but it's very rewarding once you start becoming competent

Perhaps in the future, yes, but right now America's the best choice until the EU manages to shore up, and it won't because it costs too much money to maintain a modern military and keep the countries out of debt.

America can do it because of the petrodollar, but the EU would need to have some sort of unified military command and split military spending, none of which is currently possible thanks to Germany's ailing leadership.

In Britain at least (and I assume the rest) in order to take your seat in parliament you must say an oath to the monarch, now however symbolic this may be and however empty it may be it is still mandatory, therefore the UK republic is still loyal to the queen.

Of course if she actually did a single thing she would be dethroned immediately, but the point is at this very moment every democratically elected official must swear an oath to the monarch to even become an MP, there are no Sinn Fein MPs for example, several of them have been elected but as they refuse to say the oath they were never made members of parliament.

I'm probably going to get shit on for my borders, but I'm happy to have completed my first full game, so I'm going to post it anyway.

Started as Ireland because I'm new to GS and seen that it was recommended. Started earliest (Didn't know that wasn't) with all content (Also didn't know it wasn't, hello Aztecs). Had some trouble early on due to being terrible, but I stabilized and took all of the UK around the time the Aztecs invaded.

Lombardy was fucking huge at this point, was most of Spain + France. The Aztecs steamrolled them because they had no allies to help, and it took 2 holy wars (The first in which I didn't participate) to take them out. Lombardy apparently still existed, so it took most of its old lands back while the Aztecs had the parts of Spain they hadn't had.

Aztecs steamrolled Spain again, I started fighting for dominance in France, lost a shitload of steam multiple times to supply limits changing and losing me massive armies. Eventually it came down to me fighting a coalition of Francia, Middle Francia, Lombardy, and Burgundy while the Moslems (including the converted Aztecs) attacked from Spain. Luckily the AI is complete shit, so I took on their forces one at a time and ended like this.

Your borders aren't that terrible. Well owning Iberia is and even then you could justify Iberian Galicia with Celtic unofficial casus beli it's the rest of it that's the problem. France is generally fine since by the 13th or 14th century the King of England famously "owned more land in France than the King of France".

As an advice for Ck2 - focus on characters, character relationships, dynasties, infidelities, incest etc. As a gsg it's not very deep as far as it's gsg mechanics go there's mostly just an information wall you have to cross.

A friend of mine told me basically the same thing. I stuck to hostilities with countries that were hostile to me, aside from the goal of taking France regardless of what happened. It just so happened that Francia allied with just about every major power in the area aside from the Byzantines (Who were my 1 ally, aside from some Nords temporarily), so it spiraled into everyone hating me in the area.

You haven't mentioned a single character once. Usually CK2 AARs like to over emphasize characters and write sort of character arcs and have long stories and rivalries and shit. EU4 or Vicky 2 might be more your kind of games. For one thing they don't have any characters and it's just countries vs countries.

If you want to learn EU4 the best is probably to watch either Arumba (IIRC he's /user/arumba07/ on youtube or Marco Antonio (with Marco being much more famous as one of the few really really good HoI3 players), Marco's /user/marcoan7onio/. Just watch them play and you'll learn the ingame tutorials are trash.

As someone who plays Vicky 2, CK2, and EU3/4 (not HOI though because I want more than just a military sim), and Vicky 2 really isn't any harder than CK2 or EU unless you're playing a very tiny unciv or something. If you're playing as a GP with good population it's pretty much impossible to lose, and if you're not a GP you can just ally with one and watch them steamroll for you.

Alright so I have started playing Hearts of Iron after having played CK2 and EU4 and a tiny little bit of Vic2. It did take some time to learn every single one of those (EU4 was particularly simple, Vic2 I haven't really played all that much yet but haven't run into any big problems) so a couple days ago, I decided to give HOI3 a try.

So seriously, what the FUCK? The tutorial gives you absolutely NO information on how to deal with armies, organization, unit types or combat. Just diplomacy, intelligence, production, which is the easiest to understand. I tried to watch a couple "Let's plays" and even one "Let's learn" video here that explains army organization but the guy lost me after about 10 minutes.

I tried to play with Italy, Germany and Japan and I just end up sitting and waiting for 3 fucking years while I can't declare war on anyone and just end up allocating IC to whatever is needed, not really knowing what the fuck I'm actually building or if my research is a waste of time. Army organization, different types of troops, combat, and whatever else there is to know about that, is a complete mystery to me and I don't seem to be able to figure it out without any external help, which is pissing me off.

I don't consider myself stupid but maybe this game really just exceeds my intellectual capacity and I should just go back to fucking Sims.

I was once lucky as Ethiopia and got started with 2 excellent kings (5-5-5) and then 1 decent one (4-3-3). Needless to say, I was atleast 1 technology more advanced than any European nation even though I had 60% more expensive technologies. Thanks Wiz.

there should be a feature that makes your king decide that he wants to innovate his country instead of clinging to the past. this should cause a couple of nasty uprisings, but it should also reduce (the already increased) tech penalty and give you the ability to westernize (when the conditions are met).

Proof needed. And it's true they don't fall too far behind, but in real life the Chinese tech group nations such as China, Japan, Korea and SEA fought off European colonisation in the EU4 timeframe. They shouldn't exactly be a cakewalk, and once the game has gone on a while they will fall a bit behind either in tech or ideas (they won't have the luxury of investing as heavily into both as Europeans do).

Also, Chinese tech really should be split into two groups, one for just China and one for the rest of East Asia, since China was far more advanced than the others for most of the period.

That's basically what happens. Asia starts out at the same or a small bit behind Europe but absolutely everyone falls behind over the course of the game, particularly Africans and Native Americans.

Zulu isn't in EU4, and although your example might be true with say Ming, I'd say that if England got worse monarchs than historically and Ming had better ones they would be just as (if not more) successful in fighting off European encroachment than in real life.
