Man, doing the linearity checking for this is a lot more difficult than I'd expected.
I think it has to be done in the evaluator and not the type checker, or something...
Encoding lambdas as iconic combinators should then release the need to do explicit variable usage counting, and it might allow me to keep track of closures as well. Hopefully.

First I animate a stick figure to get the movement down. Then I bulk in the mass with quick gestures. After that I just animate one section at a time until it is complete. Remember to constantly flip between the next and previous frames to make sure it lines up.

Anybody here worked on their own editor before?

I'm using Qt to make a simple editor for my OpenGL engine (just something that lets me move/resize/rotate gameobjects and stores the transform values in an XML file to be loaded by the engine)

Is there anything I should know going into this? Any tips?

I haven't even implemented any sort of UI stuff into my engine yet so I thought an ingame editor wasn't really ideal. Basically what I want is a window to display sprites, a list of GameObjects and a properties window that lets me change their transform values. It's so simplistic that I'm not sure whether I should even be using an OpenGL context or if I should just be rendering the sprites using some Qt graphics stuff, considering all the engine cares about is the XML generated by it.

I'm struggling trying to find something to be working with. I have some knowledge in Java and C, and little bit of C++ and C#.
Want to start game dev, probably starting by a simple project to train myself, some shit 2d platformer, I have some idea in my head. But i don't know what to use.
I heard that engine like Unity or UE are not fit for 2d games. I also head lot a good and bad things about c++.

Generally the end user doesn't notice or care as long as the assets are generic enough. You can get away with using the same rocks/trees/cars as another game but characters and buildings are generally not a good idea.

Rust and Stranded Deep use some of the same tree/rock packs directly from the Unity store.

To get exclusive rights to most of these asset packs would cost you hundreds to thousands of dollars. You gotta think of the time it takes an artist to make one of these packs + the mark up on it.

Actually when you look at it, the prices are bad for everybody involved.
The artist doesnt get paid enough, and the programmer pays too much.
I just dont think this assets market model is at all sustainable for either party.
Maybe as a sort of portfolio, where you drop your stuff to advertise yourself so you can be contacted for actual work.

For a game, I think a simple SARSA can work. SARSA stands for

Are you assuming the pack is purchased once?

If the pack is popular the artist can end up making more than the standard rate, and the purchasers get assets cheaper than they could otherwise, everybody wins

Making Halloween game.

Sentry gun can be now reloaded with ammo crates. It also ejects empty crates to make it easier to see if it needs to be reloaded or not.

That is on purpose. If you have 10 sentries deployed and are literally standing knee deep in ammo crates, it would be incredibly hard to tell which ones are empty and which ones are full. Now it's simple, if the lid is off, it is empty.

It shoots at the closest target currently. I thought about it shooting at the most dangerous targets first (like strong enemies). But then again it is just a sentry, it's not supposed to be that smart.

anyone here have experience with bullet's softbody physics system? i'm trying to simulate muscle contraction but i don't know what parameters to adjust. i'm looking for something analogous to a spring constant that can be adjusted dynamically while the simulation is in progress.

so far i've tried adjusting random values in the softbody's config but that hasn't yielded anything useful.

use darker versions of the interior color for outlines instead of black
I can't tell where the sun is relative to the car just by looking at the shading, pick a direction and then do all your sprites in that style
also cars are glossy, they should reflect light near the curves

You can't get by just doing art, but there are some "how to make a sidescroller" or "how to make an isometric game" tutorials, maybe even downloads. Problem is, if you don't know how the game functions on a basic level, you will have a hard time creating stuff for it.

Why is this not bad? You are making a low resolution image and then you are artificially scaling the source image up without any visual change, only change in file size? Can't GM even scale images at runtime? Normally you use 2D cameras for how big something appears on the screen.

Oh and you need something for drawing to the screen and opening a window. I'd suggest SDL2 and optionally OpenGL if you want to have full control over the graphics card

Also, my excuse for not doing anything substantial yet is because it's a pain in the ass to compile shaders for Mantle (you have to use a broken, unavailable tool) and I don't want to upgrade to W10. So I'm waiting on Vulkan.

Fuck it, I'm going to dev in GM:S, got to start game dev and stop engine dev.

Visually and animation-wise your game is on point, however I feel it it is lacking some pop with the attack. Perhaps you could experiment with how the camera reacts when you execute your attacks to accentuate the impact and delivery of the blow delivered. If you held the final frame of the animation for a split second longer, it might help the animation pop.

I don't know what your current level of development is in respect to your UI, but I think you need to invest some more time into tying your UI into your visual style, I am personally thinking Diablo/Diablo 2 mana and health bars.

Your UI is alright, but your game looks like it could be insane, so I think you should invest the time to ensure you get every detail on point fam.

You should also think about tweaking the animation of the fog in the background, it looks a bit rigid and awkward bruv.

Keep going man, I can see a winner here and I am personally excited to see how this game grows.

The god isn't animated. There's just 2 layers of fog with same, repeated texture going opposite directions at low speed.

The fog ain't too important, but I could try to do something to make attacks feel better and improve the UI. Thanks for the feedback.

So, I have 0,0 centered at the origin, I'm finding the circle clicked by distance from center vs pixel width of the board times a known ratio (for instance, a click in the outer ring will have a distance between 1*boardWidth and .876*boardWidth).

What's the best way to do something similar to find which section of the ring is being clicked?

Slopes? Radians from top? Degrees from top? Something more efficient that I haven't thought of?

but I would just
( 1 ) - create a vector for the ( x , y ) co-ord of the click ,
( 2 ) subtract the ( x , y ) of the circle centre . from the click vector
( 3 ) then calculate the angle of the resulting vector .

$would give you the angle in radians . <br /><br />conversion to degrees is pretty simples from there .$

Nothing wrong, I just blocked out the window by positioning scaled boxes in appropriate places to figure out the look of the mesh.
I'm doing a second pass over it now that I have the dimensions right and like the look of it to clean it up and build it properly.

basically, it started as an HD texture pack, and grew into monstrous bullshit that ruins the art direction of the game and adds a combination of autistic bullshit (bridges over everything and inexplicable ferns everywhere) and edgy bullshit (dildos in alyx's room, giant fake titties and "fuck" all over every grafitti texture)

there's also an infamous plane crash area added in that makes no sense (there's a bridge behind it that has taken no damage and it's an airliner that crashed in an area that's supposed to be below the "original" sea level but the plane is intact like it did a reasonably safe belly landing. also there's rebar and concrete debris around it like it crashed into something man-made, but it's embedded into sand with no concrete structures around it that have sustained damage) but I don't have that screenshot available

Trying to get the simple act of clicking a button to work in Unity, but it's proving to be more of a pain than I anticipated.

The button is a GUITexture and it's circular. I want to make it so you can click the button, but not the transparent space in the corners of the image.

How can I get it to ignore something if it's transparent?

You have a canvas object right? Inside it you have your "panel/background" you don't want player to click right? Click the panel and in the inspector on the right side there should be the option to add components to it, one component is the canvas group.

Currently playing through DQ8 and I've noticed something, something that plagues the RPG genre as a whole. The first cave dungeon and the first boss, maybe even the second boss, is the most fun I've had in the entire game. You have a very limited skill set. Enemies take actual effort to kill, and if you try to fight the boss unprepared, he WILL kill you.

It seems backtracking, hidden items and shop items are the mark of a good RPG. However, doing this takes time without a guide, and you get overleveled. You start unlocking some of your abilities and get a feel for the game. Enemies start dying in 3 turns to big aoe, bosses stop requiring preparation.

How do we keep the game challenging, while still including all of the things that make RPG's great?

Including level caps that are unlocked via story and forcing you to grind every item from the shop seems like it could be one way, but that doesn't sound very fun. Giving you 100% chance to flee a battle ( FFX for example ) is also a way, but that brings along its own set of problems.

RPG devs, how would you deal with this problem?

this is where an action-oriented game comes in, or like minigames based on specific enemies, though that could get repetitive or boring

if you were to keep XP and levels then XP scaling and enemy scaling would be appropriate, so you always gain experience no matter the place you're at, and the enemies are always difficult, no matter your level.

When you replace the human act of developing skill with making numbers climb by way of repeating actions, you run into the issue of over-repeated actions leading to too-high numbers.

Make a game with actual combat mechanics that take skill to utilize, and then your difficulty curve is borne of the player having to learn and master these mechanics, which is not something they can do by killing throwaway enemies

I guess you have a couple options.

>Scale enemy/boss levels with the player
When you level up you get a boost to your stats, so make it that enemies and bosses receive the same boosts. This way you can keep the battles about managing buffs, debuffs, shields, gear etc instead of raw power.

>Make the bosses over leveled
Set it up so if someone were to go straight from Point A to Point B with no exploring, they get their ass handed to them, but if they took time exploring they'd be better suited for the fight. It's like forced level grinding, but it's forcing the player to explore instead of dick around in the grass fighting generic mooks.

If you're trying to control how the player levels up and you don't have control over how many enemies the player will fight then all you're asking is how do you control the flow of that which levels the player up.

Have the player get a skill point when they defeat a boss or complete an area. That way they still get points to spend on customizing a build but you know exactly how many they have available every time they enter a new area and can balance accordingly.

Or you could rip off catacomb kids and have the level ups obtained through physical items placed in areas, thereby encouraging exploration if they want their level for the area.

Leveling up unlocks new attacks. Not just ones that do more damage, but ones that do damage + debuffs, damage over time, etc etc.

RPGs are always going to be dull if level ups just give you stat boosts. It's more interesting if leveling changes the strategies you use.

DQ8 is my favorite RPG so I'll give you my input. Backtracking is not fun in an RPG. Most recent RPGs I've played are DQ8, DQ5 and FFX and FFXII, and the only one that has major backtracking is FFXII because you run around Dalmascan Westersand and Giza Plains alot, and also because of quests. These RPGs are good because they gives the player (nearly) complete freedom from the get-go and doesn't punish the player for going where they shouldn't be going.

Any limitation placed on you is either mobility or level, meaning if it were possible for you to flee every battle you could prob make it to Maella Abbey or even Pickham before the enemy speeds make it impossible and if you could ride chocobos you could make it to the Necrohol of Nabudis from the moment you're able to leave Rabanastre. Devs like Enix separate the world map into continents and ramp up the enemy difficulty for each new continent you discover. FFXII has this in form of new map areas, and FFX doesn't really need it because it's pretty linear. Star Ocean 4 has new planets to go to, and Ni No Kuni... doesn't have that.

Ni No Kuni is a good example of an RPG that quickly gets boring because although it gives the player freedom, they still hold your hand all the way throughout to even the final boss. NNK would have been a very good RPG had it not been for Mr. fucking Drippy popping up in every boss battle to take off half the bosses' health. It doesn't help that the normal enemies are weak and tedious to fight and easily avoided but the bosses are impossible to beat without Mr. Drippy or intense grinding.

All in all, don't limit the player but give them incentives to following the plot, everything will come naturally, there's no reason to force the player into following the plot a la FFXIII, and no reason to punish them for not abusing their freedom a la NNK, just make the plot give better rewards than not following it

It inheres in the concept of "levels" that Level 5 is necessarily more powerful than Level 4... But it is NOT necessarily true that Ability C is more powerful than Ability B. Just different. Once you master Ability C you have more options in combat and thus can potentially overcome new challenges with new strategies; with leveling up, the same strategy simply gains a degree of efficacy until such time as your numbers are so big the challenge ceases to exist.

Lrn2balance. It's possible to give the player a number of different abilities, none of which is overpowered relative to the other abilities.

More abilities = more potential strategies, but that doesn't mean that one strategy is automatically more effective. In fact, if it IS, and the correct approach to gameplay after unlocking said ability is to use it as often as possible because of its superiority, I would say that's a failure of game design and an error in balance.

I have a large surface, it has a tiled texture 2048x2048 (it needs to be this tiled texture) and a secondary map that will be 1024x1024 (shitty quality for such a large surface) but it will only dirty up the tiled texture to help hide the actual tile and give areas unique feeling such as more or less worn out floor, grime, scratches, etc

programs are: 3ds max and engine is unity

main map is tiled 4.7 times, second is 1 time

No it's not. Preventing grinding is different to pacing your game so that grinding isn't a problem, which is different to encouraging grinding.

FF13 = preventing/ discouraging grinding, enemies only respawn under certain conditions, your pace is locked
FFX = pace makes it so grinding isn't a problem, enemies give s.exp but only occasionally drop spheres to actually use. Later in the game, you normally carry max spheres but s.exp is harder to get
FF12 = encourages grinding, chains build up as you defeat enemies of the same type, giving you better drops and more exp

Preventing grinding will only make your game shit. If you're making an RPG where you don't allow the player the ability to overlevel if they want to, you better have some gimmick that makes it worthwhile

Did a rigging test earlier, auto weights are a bit wonky, but if it is neccessary, I can use them.

Most of the game is going to be pretty dark though, I feel like I'm probably pouring too much time into the model. I'll finish the hands, add details, fix the joints for an armature and then learn to animate in time for the deadline. Rest goes on the backburner.

Hi guys!
Our idling game is finally on the playstore! Please be so kind and take a peek at it if you got a minute. In case you don't know what an idling game is, it is a game where you collect money over time, from which you can buy things to collect even more money! Think Cookie Clicker kinda.
