Assuming they are playable the buffs from supports could function like normal, but if they weren't then avatar "supports" could function as passive stat buffs or skills that can be earned by reaching certain points in the story or deploying that unit X number of times.
From a story perspective I don't really like it when the self-insert has significant plot focus around them. That's not to say they can't do anything important, but they shouldn't be stealing the spotlight away from the main character like Robin did. At least Fates fixes this by just making you the main character. All I really need though is to just be "that tactician" who helps lead the army to victory, nothing super fancy.
I don't think MU's should "talk" because it ultimately results in them establishing distinct personalities, even if they are super bland, that may interfere with your immersion. However, they should still be able to interact with the characters.
My solution would be to use a support system like in Awakening/Fates, but have the conversations be more "One way" like in FE7 or the Awakening DLC recruitment conversations. You could even go as far as to make certain supports "timed" after critical plot events occur.
The Avatar should still be able to support with everyone, but for everyone else their support options should be limited since I don't particularly care for the children system and everyone in the army being able to fuck anyone of the opposite sex (because it detracts from the writing quality of the supports). That being said, marriage and face rubbing are still fine inclusions that I wouldn't mind keeping.
