This game actually forced me to upgrade my computer.

Kind of glad, honestly. Without games pushing the envelope of what the 'normal' computer of the day is, the standard for what games are developed with in mind progresses more slowly, which limits what can actually be produced because then no one actually has a good enough computer to play what CAN be made, because no one has needed to get a good enough computer.

Basically hardware needs to update faster to keep up with what is actually possible with software. Otherwise software stagnates, which causes hardware to stagnate, etc.

And with no real reason. It shouldn't even really be that intensive on a system, especially when playing on n64 mode.
I have no goddamn clue how it is this game runs as poorly as it does.
Nor do I understand what I need to make it run better. Right now I'm trying to decide if I need more ram or if my cpu is the bottleneck. Or if an SSD might actually improve performance.

Do dinos vanish when you are not around? I mean wild ones.

We caged the fucker in pic related. Even added an extra layer of containment in case he managed to phase through it. Yet when we came back from an expedition, he was just gone. Along with a couple of scorpions we caged.

We're playing local if that helps.

Sometimes. They aren't permanently saved like tamed ones, since that'd be a strain on the server.
They stick around for a while if the cell has been active lately, then if a cell has been dormant it seems to just spawn new dinos when someone re enters.

At least that's what I'm guesstemating, based on experience and knowledge of how the rest of the game works.

I recommend carrying tracking beacons and placing them on high level wild dinos. For instance, instead of carrying kibble and attempting to tame anything whenever I see something worthwhile, I simply track it and whatever tribe mate that's not doing much will come by on a bird, pick it up, then tame it at one of our bases.

I -think- tracking beacons prevent something from despawning.

How does taming work with stats? For example, if I tame a level 100 raptor, does he gain additional base damage when the tame finishes or do the bonuses to damage he gets when wild convert into melee damage percentages? I'm trying to decide if Raptor A with 500% melee damage is always stronger than Raptor B with 200% melee damage, or if because Raptor B has more base damage that he gets more from his melee damage percentage.

For example, a level 1 raptor has 15 melee damage, but as they level up in the wild, they get an additional .75 every few levels. Does that carry over after taming?

Cool, then that has some implications on player harvesting vs dino harvesting as well. I know all tools/dinos have a harvest efficiency stat, but the amount/speed harvested is also determined by base damage * melee damage percent.

The other goal of the question was to discover at what breakpoint would a survivor with a Y quality tool and X melee damage equal, for example, an anklyo with 500% melee damage. Considering the anklyo has a base damage of 50, 500% melee damage makes that 250, and a metal/obsidian harvesting efficiency of 5, a player would need a journeyman pick to match the base damage * harvesting efficiency of the anklyo (And then need 500% melee damage on top of that, but the higher you climb in base damage, the less melee damage percentage you'd need to equal the anklyo).

What's the best way to remove structures from caves and defend them from people looking to graffiti them with metal foundations? A tribe on our server has locked down every cave with metal foundations except for their cave in the north, I can clear them out, but they can outpace me with deploying new structures more quickly.

Are caves even worth venturing in periodically for loot? I know they've got loot chests, but I haven't been able to get one yet. I was looking to farm blueprints and higher quality items from them instead of doing supply drops.

The thing is, the anklyo is too much of a liability right now, as is using a mammoth, doedicerous, or any other gathering dino that's not a very fast carnivore -- the skies around most major mining sites, especially those with obsidian and oil, are too hostile to take anything more than a disposable dino to harvest, because whatever I take isn't coming back.

So the question was more one of how close can I get to a dino in terms of harvesting speed and if it's worth attempting to harvest things on my own. It's not going to be ideal, but it might be as good as my situation allows.

Also, it's a pretty big rush, sneaking into the mountains at night with night vision food and a silenced rifle and picking off players on birds. Until attrition sets in though and they cave to me taking a cut of resources, I'm having to do most of my work on foot and by hand.

Most mountains on my server have someone farming them during primetime every day. Only time I can really safely get any sort of material from them is during the early hours of the morning or way late at night on weekends. Otherwise there's going to be someone swooping in and picking me up off my mount about once or twice an hour, and any structures I build get demolished within a day if that.

I guess part of this is my fault though, some guys came and raided my base when I was level 20 or so (I think they were on the way somewhere else, but I was close by so they decided to make a pit stop at the guy living in the wood hut), so I took a crossbow and several hundred arrows and went indiscriminately killing dinos all around their base, even to those unaligned. So now I have a reputation as a loose cannon and am unemployable, all my structures are kill on sight, so I have to stick to building in the ocean, pillar bases under jungle cover, and small 1x1 boxes here and there until server transfers become a thing again.

I could just quit, but I'm level 70 now, so I feel like it'd be a waste. I just wanted to build a small base and tame stuff, but things have gone wrong.

My only hope is that eventually they get tired of being open to reprisal anytime they're outside their base, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. If I could get my hands on a good amount of C4, I might actually be able to strike a blow against one of their strongholds, but it's a slow process.

I really want to take a sea cave and fortify the shit out of it as a base, but I'd have to respec my character with more O2 than I'd feel comfortable with. I wonder if I got turrets up at one if they'd be able to remove me.

Anywhere between 17.50 to 40/50 USD. With the traffic the server got i dont think you need more than a 30-35 person server, maybe more people would come but i dont think we ever hit the 30 people limit even at peak times. I really think unless you're a richfag someone who has a server or the capability to run their own should do it.

It hardly warrants a guide, but there's some on youtube.
Basically you just shove an intake into the nearest water body, then build pipes to take it home, and taps over your crop plots. Nothing more to it.

The south part has at least four of these places, the safest one of all being the island to the southeast. No carnivores spawn there, enclosed area, perfect for construction.

It's pretty much the same thing as irrigation, except you set down a generator and then build pip-- I mean electrical cables out of it, then an outlet to power structures. Said structures automatically create a power cable to the nearest outlet so it's not really hard to place.

Ark wiki on Google has most of what you'll need but to sum up farming.

Thank you. On my single player I started building on the footpaw. That's the south-westerly area. Right about 80 Lat 35 Lon, but it doesnt seem to be large enough for the amount of Dinos I'm getting and was trying to plan an exodus to a nearby, large area. Weathertop would be perfect, if the rocks were all gone, but you can't seem to remove those.

Is it safe to assume that if I were to join the PvE server, I could attempt to make it on my own? Are people not able to harm me or my dinos, or raid my base, even? Sorry about all the new questions.

PvE servers are more notorious for griefing than PvP servers, at least on PvP you can retaliate but on a PvE you'd be receiving/doing exactly this, dropping wilds into pens because that's the closest you'll get to a fight. The ocean is so empty now and none of the resources in it are rare with the addition of the snow biome.
I really want them to add alphas, more aquatic life, and maybe better incentives to go to UW caves like the loot crates you'd find in the surface caves. Even better would be artifacts in the UW caves that allow you to summon a depths boss.

If wildcard didn't throw out 100 grand each month on these stupid streaming events that they interfere with anyways, they could afford admins or moderators for the official servers. 355 aside many servers have fallen and become "ghost-servers" because of cheaters and negligent administration. Hell, if they'd just have some kind of volunteer mod/janitor position with stripped powers, public logs and a chain of command to ensure the lowest chance of abuse half the problems would disappear overnight.
