In the same turn, we finally manage to corner the last remnants of the Suebi.

After I wrecked them in a garrison battle, they've been wandering around Gaul as just their king's bodyguard, and occasionally one other unit. However, their king and his guard managed to slay the emperor Honorius, after His Imperial Majesty made the unwise decision to hunt down the Suebi king with only his own personal guard as back-up.

Not only are we finally tying up a loose end, but we are also avenging our fallen emperor. A fitting task for Faustus Terentius Piso, adopted son and heir to Imperator Flavius Stilicho.

I remember in Napoopan's Egyptian campaign, the AI was always attacking one of my cities with a army full of camels. I would just put my soldiers in a house and wait for the timer to run out.

Out of those only Brettonia actually has an army book and is an important part of the story.

The only faction without an army book we might see is Kislev (!Poland/Russia). Because they are pretty important and have a big following.

Has some fan produced army books for folks like Estalia and Albion and Nippon and Tilea (Dogs of War being Tilea).

Tilea reads pretty much like Carthage with ltos of mercs (dorf, elf, nrose, orc) but when I read it they seemed magic weak. Only one magic user, a hero unit. Obviously CA could go their own direction but it does seem reasonable for the Tilseans to be mroe magic weak.

So I read the pastebin and I'm still a little lost. I just started playing Total War for real like 3 weeks ago and spent that time getting good enough in Shogun 2 to play on Hard and win relatively easily in everything except Fall of the Samurai where the slow pace of the campaign leads to extremely low personal morale after every defeat.

Now, I'm trying to get into Rome 2, also on Hard though maybe should start Normal, and I can't seem to kill a thing unless I outnumber them greatly. I'm not trying to pull any fancy maneuvers, just doing the initial slinger dance and then engaging with melee and hitting them in the flanks. No real cavalry to speak of yet. Yet my men always route first and I have no idea why.

What changes need to be made in my brain to transition from Japanese supremacy to filthy Roman barbarians?

Leave some extra infantry at your flanks, even if you have to thin out your main line, and once the enemy hits, run them around to flank.

It'll take longer than cav, but all you have to do is route the enemies along the edge of your line, and it starts a cascade, whereby you free up more of your own troops to flank the rest of the enemy. Unless they have cavalry to hit your flanking troops from behind, it's easy. And even if they do have cavalry, you just need to be extra careful, and set up a testudo/shieldwall/pikewall unit between them and your flanking fighters.

Oh, and always try and goad the enemy into attacking your line. Even when you started the battle, if you move close enough to them and stop, or sometimes even if you just wait where your troops started the battle at, the AI will attack.

This lets you put your men into shieldwall/testudo in preparation, which gives you a huge advantage to staying power.

Spears are fucking trash, upgrade to Baltha defenders ASAP and let them form the core of your army, anti cav comes in camels and archers. Do not underestimate the steady ability most of your troops get, some camels get it too. It's a massive boost in staying power. Go Jewish if you want to field some of the most powerful heavy infantry in the game, Pagan if you'd like your armies to be more flexible and with greater emphasis on skirmishing and cav.

That's bullshit and you know it. In Paradox DLCs the content isn't even in your game until you buy it. Also they are far from cosmetic. And even the cosmetic ones shouldn't be in game, being forced to pay for the correct faces on a race or group in game is just scandalous.

They aren't though, in EUIV you're actively hindered by not owning dlc, and in CK2 the dlc adds core gameplay features, really central stuff.

With CA, the dlc only provides an addition of what you've already got (more factions, more units, more of the same). If anything, CA dlc is far less central than Paradox's is.

No that's not how it works, all of CAs DLCs are obviously developed after release with the exception of the preorder one.

Hell no it's not. Playing a different faction in EU/CK is just playing a different map painter, nothing changes but the visuals really, just superficial stuff. A different faction in TW is a completely new experience, take the Sand empires for example, whole new mechanics, unique units that fight unique, units in paradox games are nothing but a Campaign map icon.

You paradox shills resort to the worst forms of lying.

I had a level 1 spy and 4 level 5 spies sat in France where I knew they had a spy, and it took those fuckers over 15 turns to kick out ONE spy.

Considering the fact that cavalry/chariot/elephant charges are the only thing that can reliably break morale in Divide et Impera, I'd say they're pretty fucking mandatory in every army. Especially since kill rates are slowed down that you're never going to destroy an army by killing it.

I'd say they're even better than they are in vanilla since you can easily route a 20 man army in two-three charges with the true and tried hammer and anvil.

It's not that bad. You could get the larger garrisons mod, if you wanted to have an easier time defending shit. Then you just have to upgrade buildings and build new ones to give your provinces the needed public order to be happy again. Then you can take over your half of Africa and take Britannia, turning those two places into economic powers, eventually placing governors there since you'll need the money to eventually take over the ERE.

Yeah, it's kind of fun on that desperate "I'm struggling for survival and every move needs to be smart" way, but it's incredibly tedious in playing out the same siege battles again and again since you're forced to entrench in some positions while you sort your shit out. I'd say it's fun as a campaign and on the strategic level, but not on the tactical one - but you can't autoresolve because every resource counts too much.

Personally, I held them all even as I made no effort to defend most of them. I focused on fortifying Africa, Spain and Italy since they were easy places to expand out of later. Ended up keeping southern France without having to try much. Upgraded Venice and whatever covers the Alps to be the toppest tier cities with garrison buildings (crossbows are amazing defending the city by the way), then kept small armies in the area to reinforce as needed. By now I have all of Spain, France, Belgium, Ireland and the British Isles and am expanding into Germany, at which point I'll finally have to break out of Venice apparently.

Dei is just retarded, any problems caused by drunk soldiers is totally canceled out by their pacifying effect on the population. No matter how drunk they get having 50,000 soldiers stationed in your little village won't make you rebel because it's certain death. Just like in dei when they do rebel because of the large army, and they get slaughtered.

I didn't take as many pictures as I had thought, actually.

But the better moments were when the catapults started landing stones on our position, half of them ricocheting off of the walls below the archers. And then our marine infantry landed at the last minute, willing to fight and die with their brothers even though they could have escaped in their ship, meeting their end in a countercharge by the enemy cavalry.

I'd argue there's a difference between a force on garrison duty and an army hanging on a city. The former tends to be disciplined since they're there for that reason, the latter tends to cause a shitstorm including harassment, rape and looting on the civilians, especially before the times of proper standing armies. That being said, I don't think the game can model that well and the PO penalty as is does not make sense.

I went ahead and made the initial tutorial for taking FOTE (or any mod) and isolating just the textures/unit icons and assigning them to vanilla units. It includes an example edit of assigning the FOTE Western Cohors VMD to Vanilla Rome 2 Western Cohors units. As you can see in the picture the Eastern Cohors for the ERE have vanilla VMDs and this is ran exclusively on the @twg_skin_pack & fote packs 1 and 2 (which contain the variant meshes).

I have to go for a few hours shortly, and I did this rather late last night so while everything should be in working order if there's any errors I'll try and fix it as soon as I can.

I will in the next few days do the tutorial on how to edit unit VMDs to change equipment on the soldiery, so that you can do stuff like create a Hetairea Guard 2h axemen with FOTE armor and accessories but the 2h axe, or a FOTE version of the Menauroi Pikemen.

I'm thinking of what cavalry to use in the African reconquest campaign.

Is there any point in taking shock cavalry over melee cavalry? It seems really finicky to properly take advantage of the shock bonus (having to constantly micro your cav to retreat and return), and even when you do it right, you still always lose a few horses to the enemy.

I really wish we could give cav a stance like the thing skirmishers have, that would cause them to retreat immediately upon a successful charge, maybe even charge again and again until we tell them otherwise.

It was bretty quick to do the tutorial, but in retrospect you're right. Still, I figure it's good to have on hand for people to know how to change unit VMDs/Icons. The next tutorial will be more useful because it might be working with TWEAK and unit VMDs seems more daunting than it is for people at first look.

And that way you guys can do your own changes either for autismal accuracy or interest or for shits and giggles - once you get the hang of it you could take DEI's materials and throw in Greek hoplites for the ERE if you wanted to. Or the guy wanting overhauled celts could make some new celt VMDs to tide him over until we get to it.

Depends. Situation own forces vs situation enemy forces.
Shock cavalry are sort of a glass cannon so with Roman defensive infantry you may be better off taking mostly shock cav to act as a hammer if the enemy has no credible cavalry

Playing as desert kingdoms with an only nomads can raze mod can lead to some great stuff, play the diplomacy game with ERE and sassanids to weaken them both while getting paid for it, then by the time you get to europe there's quite a sizable barbar coalition to fight if not one big barbar empire. Most fun I've had for a while, never seen half the celt and germanic late game units used against me before then.

I legitimately laughed, however your not far off. On a huge battle with abunch of arrows and effects and trees and shit. It drops to around 5fps zoome din. Zoomed out i can manage around 10-15. Luckily those battles are rare. Most battles like this one I can manage 20 + fps.

Poor sweet naive anon, they will stay with them when the sasssanids are a single province backwater and they're multi-province empires. It's fucking awful. The only way you're coming out of there is by wiping the sassanids out and hoping your military is strong enough to make the now free satrapies want peace.

I was starting to think that. Fortunately the power balance bar on the diplomacy screen is starting to look ridiculously one-sided in my favour and I get Armoured Legio next turn.
It's times like this I miss the military power graphs where you can see your enemy's strength nose-dive after a few battles

Jewish Himyar are undisputed masters of heavy infantry in the eastern half of the map with equally heavy cav in the form of camels, you have a pretty massive variety in how you can use your roster and only really fall flat in spearmen, but who the fuck cares when your swordsmen are borderline unkillable. Pagan Himyar are significantly less brute force in their front line but in exchange are a lot more flexible with their cav and skirmishing and can use tactics beyond smashing into the enemy frontline and trampling them underfoot.

Early game you want to crush Aksum asap then push north through the EREs client states, try and get Alexandria before the Sassanids and their swarms arrive, the ERE should be too busy dealing with Sassanids to bother you in any real way and you can use this time to grab a few pieces of territory off them in Palestine and consolidate.

Before going after the Sassanids upgrade armies, towns and tech until you can support multiple stacks with Baltha Defenders as the primary infantry and camel support, then go full tricky Jew man and offer the ERE peace in exchange for turning on the Sassanids, try and get some shekels and a trade agreement with them too for maximum Jewing. The ERE will have a huge amount of pressure taken off it when you join the war and Baltha Defenders+camels will absolutely shitter shatter sassanids armies who are probably miles away from home giving it to the ERE.

Have Magus fucking everywhere, each fully upgraded town temple increases your cap on them by 1 up to 10 or 12, I can't remember which, and you're going to need them to rapidly convert the cesspool of local traditions that is the rest of the middle east.

That's more than a few tips and more like a small walkthrough tbh.

Can deploy anywhere and are hide in plain sight, they're average a lot of the time but they do excessive damage if they can get a flanking charge on something. I don't really like them because your super heavy infantry are almost as brutal while being borderline unkillable, and camels are better on flanking duties since they also serves as your anti-cav. Tolkien actually based a lot of LotR on the Norse saga about the Gothic-Hunnic wars. Playing horsefucker-mode Saxons and fighting save Europe from the eastern Hordes is about as close to LotR you can get, without actually playing the Medieval II mod.

It's just a shame that they have the shitty normal barbarian voices. It'd be cool if someone made a mod to give them the sexy English accents of the Romans (and removed references in the voice selections specifically referring to Roman stuff).

Alternatively, just play Alans, because they are designed for horsefucker mode. You can make an army entirely out of really good cavalry, and their special ability means that you can retreat from any battle, and none of your troops will take extra casualties from the pursuit (because all will be horsemen).

If it was just, say, trading regions on your borders of similar value, with the AI only being interested in being given good stuff for cheap, or completing provinces, it would be great. I could pretty up muh borders, and if I conquer half of Gaul, I can give it to my Frankish allies in return for the one fucking town in Britain that they conquered before me.

Is there a mod or Rome 2 or Attila that doesn't allow enemies to take settlements in one turn? I way preferred the rome 1/medieval 2 system where you had to spend at least a turn building siege equipment even when attacking small towns.

It doesn't even slightly work. You can have full supply depots and your troops will starve in the next province despite it saying it supplies 3 provinces wide.
The only counter would be to raid the province which gives your army food. Great right? No they decided to make it so you can't even move slightly in raid mode. So either starve or stand still. Just ignore that armies marched through lands living off it pillaging and stealing food all the time.

Also, the shock infantry still wrecks shit, the Javelins are both strong melee units and fantastic skirmishers that butcher people, and their cavalry is also good, not to mention that the lands around them allow them to AoR some of the best cavalry in the game.

Two evenly matched armies should take around 15mins to fight it out, not to mention that their new stats and morale system makes it so you can't simply go on auto pilot, units can easily break if you don't manage them properly

no more phalanx units lasting for eons despite being completely surrounded.

Which AI mod is best for roma 2. So far I have tested these two.

Radious AI ( only AI ), wasn't that bad it was hella agressive but in the late game it was utter shit. Once got a situation when boi backtabed my 3 cities in 1 turn. That was impressive.

Better Agressive CAI for rome , is not that good. AI just spams peace treaties and defensive pacts and turtles 24/7.

The honour/bushido stuff only really came about during the Edo period because the shogunate wanted to keep order and stability (and their position of power). It's easier to keep control of things when warriors are tied down to one place/lord, rather than being mercenaries like they were in the Warring States period who switch sides when they feel like it.

Fall of the Samurai and maybe Napoleon has the best gunpowder gameplay. Empire got some serious problems with unit responsiveness. Medieval 2 also has some gunpowder but it is really clunky.

As far as gunpowder total war:

Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai: most satisfying artillery
Empire: Most satisfying campaign experience, best map.
Napoleon: best gameplay, best multiplayer, worst campaign map, really solid artillery but not as good-looking or satisfying as in FOTS.

Not really, napoleon has a tiny map and FoTS just ends up being an arty turkey shoot but if you like gunpowder games and can look past the flaws they can be enjoyable.
