If you have some prototype to show, and are sure about the deadlines, than there is no reason not to hold a Kickstarter.

They really are the worst. Day/night cycles really put them on display (in a bad way), kind of like Yanderedevs updates where you see shadows on walls from fences dancing around.

I'm switching shaders on everything now and it seems to help but I'll show that later.

No, Unity doesn't need a "level editor", the entire IDE allows world building, animating, texturing etc. Come to the future, you're stuck in 2010.

Two agdg regulars were known to go off the deep end regarding tripfags/namefags. One was sourcefam aka reek, the other was rotatedev who felt so strongly about it he made agdg2 in an attempt to force anonymity amongst devs. That failed horribly, and was an unforgivable crime against agdg which has landed him on a permanent blacklist. Rotate is now reek as well.

I have a small question, I puled out a small code that is supposed to pick a random number from this 2D array I made with tables and change it from 1 (Wall) to 0 (Ground), I'm testing some things before starting with what >>120305783 told me to do so I understand a bit more before starting. Everything seems to go well except for the fact that my random table picker only seems to take tiles from the first column! Here is what I got:

This is true. I don't have that many enemies yet. I have already second area planned and I've posted gifs and pictures about it, but currently it's quality is not good enough. I'm trying to improve slowly.

I've lately been mostly working on transition from linear to open world style and improving the art of the game. It has not helped that lots of shit has happened to me IRL that has prevented me from deving, but this ain't my blog and no one probably cares so don't go to details.

Basically what I have in mid is a Item class with variables like name, description, price, etc. and lots of different items (like apple, orange, etc) all with their own name price etc.
So each of these items would have a script attached that inherits from Item, declaring all the different variable values for that specific item.

Ok so like there's this planet, yeah? As many players as the server can support can join and populate the planet. And they can be whatever type of mammal they want, deer, wolves, tigers, humans, chimps, gorillas, baboons. Alright and it's got a style of combat similar to Mount & Blade. my idea for a character interaction would be as follows:
A female character named Verona (introduced to you as "Verona, as in 'Fair Verona, where we set out scene'") asks you to come over one day and help her clean her house. You arrive on time and she welcomes you in and closes the door, yadda yadda.
She asks if you can organize her bookshelf, so you walk over to the bookshelf and interact with it and it brings up a minigame. Essentially the idea is that it's a low impact, idle minigame that you play while her dialogue is happening. There are 3 shelves that each have a genre and you have to organize the books by genre and alphabetically by swapping them. There will also be something cute like a pink romance book that she takes away when you click on it. While you're playing the minigame she will be talking to you, giving idle chat. For example:

“Like I was saying, I keep a pretty tight ship. It’s gotten away from me in the past few days… I don’t know what’s up with that…”
“Nothing was wrong or anything. I’ve just been busy, is all. Anyway, I’m getting back on the ball. I’ve decided I want to start painting.”
“I didn’t really think about what I wanted to paint, just that I wanted to start. Maybe I’ll do a snowy scene, I’ve always loved snowy winter scenes.”
“And really, most of the work is already done for you, eh? Canvas is already white! Ha!”

and all the dialogue will be designed so that it can be interrupted at any point, when you're done with the minigame. Once you finish sorting the books there will be a dish washing minigame which will be similarly idle.

If anyone has some feedback on this idea, I'd be glad to hear it!

That's the point of doing it that way in the first place. It doesn't matter what framerate the game runs at in real time since every frame is captured and recorded asynchronously. You can play at 10fps and still get a full 60fps video output because it's not recording in real time.

I just noticed in my expirience how "juicy" tweening can enhance your game feel.
In my game the player character can move when his ATB (active time battle) bar is full. When it's just filled, I change the bar's color to yellow and also play a sfx, like in Final Fantasy. I created ~6 different sound effects, and all of them sounded kinda off.

Then I remembered the various videos about game feel and juice, and added tweening to atb bar coloring. And the sound effect now completely fits with the bar animation!

Video compression kinda butchered the effect, but it feels really good.

tl;dr: "juice" is your friend if you use it moderately.

My 2d games use 3d models, and unity runs on every platform from pc to nintendo 3ds with solid performance.

It's literally sec 4 math to do this. I don't know how unity handles positions and facings exactly, but the math to do it is a simple creation of a line between the entity you want to change the facing of and the entity it's "looking at", then doing some simple trig to find what the slope of that line is in degrees instead of rate/grade.

A "texture asset" could be loaded or unloaded (and internally references a "texture"). But you're probably better off implementing "texture asset" as a handle into the asset manager.

Because that's what happens in almost all frameworks anyway. It plays nicer with the GPU.

And it's a pointless complaint when it runs just fine on literally any platform you would want to make a game in. It runs on a 3ds with no performance issues, I'm sure what inefficiency it carries is unimportant. I'm sure I'll reconsider when I want my game to run on a tamogotchi.

The advantage of unity is it's a single technology and platform. What you learn in 3d can be used in 2d and vice versa. That doesn't make it perfect, but it makes it a perfect option(though just an option) for new gamedevs who want to start simple and build up without learning new frameworks and engines every step of the way

You're correct, in order to really remove seams you need to do proper 3D modeling. Unity will not modify existing 3D models for you, it only allows animating rigged models or retexturing.

Speaking of, if you wanna make something like those games, why not just use that engine and its tools? Aleph One is open source iirc and the old Forge/Anvil tools still work for it.

It always bewilders me when people use higher-end engines to replicate stuff that can still be done with the oldschool tools (that are, honestly, easier to use)

Thanks! I was thinking more Wizardry and Grimrock than early Bungie, but that's not a bad reference point, now that you mention it.

As for the tools, this is more about learning Unity and coding than anything else. Plus, it's just placeholder graphics, I may want to add 3D characters, etc.

So, I'm trying to do a basic dungeon generation engine for my halloween jam game, I doubt I'll finish it in time, but meh, it's all about the practice.

I want to pick a random cell from the map table (Love2D's version of a 2D array) file (Already done, supposed to be working, can't really be sure) and change it from 1 to 0 so it becomes ground.

I already tried changing the activeCell variable to 0, but it doesn't work.

I'm tired and new, so bear with me if I made any obvious mistake

The proof came weeks later when someone made a joke about reporting him for CP and we then saw that rotate was freaking out in IRC about having to nuke his hard drives. Sourcefam is a fuckup in his own ways but yeah. Rotate is a sick little faggot with an adderall addiction who needs to leave 4chan altogether and stop lying all the time. The biggest lie he ever told us was that he was going to leave us alone.

in Godot, I'm trying to lock the GUI to the window but since I'm zoomed in on the character, the UI is outside of the visible area. I've tried instancing the UI on the character's scene, but that just has it locked to moving around with them which is almost what I want but not quite. Ideas?

It's badly designed. The character has one health so it's either easy as fuck or you get killed by the simplistic AI. The only difficultly comes from cheapness. It's never that you made a poor tactical decision in the middle of combat or your aim wasn't quick or accurate enough.

Just snipe people outside of their pathetically short line of site, cheese them at doors or mow them down easily as you open a door or just die because a single bullet touched your toe.

Thanks for your observation and advice on my office. That particular screenshot shows the very beginning where there are some straight rows of hallways, but after that things become a little more complicated. But yeah, due to me not having very much time (this is for the Halloween jam) I have a pretty limited set of assets at the moment. I do have a handful of little props like file cabinets, chairs, exit signs, name tags on doors, and such to put around. If I have time I'll make a few more assets like those. Since I may not have time to make new art to help variation and navigation, I plan to use light color a lot, having different lights on or off and having particular discolorations and the like. On top of that, I think something else that'll help is ambient sound. For example, sounds heard from behind particular doors.

How do I get sprites drawn using the "draw_sprite" function to stop playing it's animation by the end of the frame? Everyone explains how to make the sprite_index sprite stop but not the sprites drawn with "draw_sprite".

Why don't sprites animate at all if the sprite_index for the object uses a 1-frame sprite?

Do I have to strategically move the sprite_index sprite's and the other two hearts' positions depending on how many lives the player has left? I could do that but I just want to know if there's an easier way.

So how feasible is it to make a dungeon have a realistic layout and then add thing to challenge the player? I always hated how in Fallout and TES the vaults/dungeons felt more like linear levels than abandoned structures.
