Our ships are significantly more modular than we usually mention: weapons, internal parts, sensors, computers, software and even structural elements like wings can be changed in various situations. The escape pod is the most similar ‘modular’ concept to the Retaliator pods, but the upgrade kits include other changes (such as different nose guns, a different turret mount for the area just behind the cockpit, etc.)

I visited F42 a couple of months ago and one of the guys said he doesn't know how they're going to make the redeemer flyable let alone aesthetically presentable considering the fucking awful job Paul had done on it. Apparently there are several copyright issue because the fucking moron had use cut and paste from ships in other games just to get finished on time. Added to that the cockpit was a disgusting mess. He'd used X52 joystick from another game and just slapped it in there without any care. The guy also told me the Redeemer just looked shit from the initial design and wasn't F42 material not even close.

And as you said, he micromanages, and that's extremely toxic in this context: he has been away from game development for a decade (and the previous project was Freelancer, which failed due to scope creep) so he *needs* to listen to the advice of all up-to-date industry professionals he's hiring, and the head of HR is also his spouse. That last bit really blows my mind, because it means he has nothing to reign him in - no publisher to answer to, he's everyone's boss with the big paycheck, and lastly nobody has any recourse to voice their grievances due to that big conflict of interest.

This is not a good recipe for game development.

Additionally (and this is anecdotal, so feel free to ignore it if you wish), I have a close friend that works for a company that's being outsourced for SC (asset monkeys, basically, with the pay to match) and the stories he tells me regarding being blamed for delays, constantly having to redo work, and even being told they'd never be hired again and yet be re-hired to do more assets a few months later, are consistent with the mismanagement issues you'd expect to happen given the above, and also with what was mentioned in David Jennison's letter. He can't comment on what working conditions people actually at CIG proper have, but those issues relating directly to asset creation are something they're experiencing themselves from being handed work from CIG.

Chris is dreaming of a game with a scale that has never been around before. When people insult his game, they directly insult him (in his opinion).
Is that unprofessional? Yes.
Should everyone think of him as a genius? No.
Does most of the people think of him as a genius? No.

Is he capable thanks to the funding, the team and his expierence to create this game? Yes.

People consider him as a dreamer. Not some EA investment manager fucking the CEO from a studio over a game like Battlefield Star Front.

This isn't your regular devlopment. Get used to it, this stuff happens. Hell, the whole development felt sometimes just so clunky and amateurish. Hint: If other people would be that open with their development as well, they would look like idiots, too.

I said "publicly posting", as in, the act to take this letter/rant addressed to the Escapist and posting on his website for the world to see.

It just makes things look worse, because not only did he write the rant in the first place, he also had time to re-read it, reflect on his actions, and then decide that "sure, everyone should see this thing I made while angry."

No, I'm saying that defining Chris as a CEO of a multi-million dollar corporation and accusing him of being unprofessional is stupid. Sure, they call him "Chairman" but at the end of the day he's anything but a CEO. CIG's annual revenue from the pledge campaign barely qualifies it as a middle-market company. Chris himself has never been formal about his position in any way.

The point is, he's basically an indie dev with 90+ million in funding. Ill advised rants are pretty typical of people in his position and I've seen much worse examples of the behavior, as I am sure you have too.

I literally have not completed a match of any kind since 1.3 dropped live. It worked fine for me on PTU, but since Live its been Crash after crash after infinite loading screen, and 80% of the time it loads, it loads my ship incorrectly, the latest incident involves my gladiator loading in with nothing at all on the gun hardpoints.

SO instead they replace a stable build with a build where the game is unplayable, literally, 80% of the time and the other 20% its got missiles more likely to kill teammates than hostiles, my CS missiles are getting spoofed by flares, and then retargeting and killing friendlies more often than they hit what I aimed them at. I just fired fired probably ~75 Tempest 2s at a superhornet monoboat, and got maybe 10 hits, and from that 1 kill.

And the superhornet was spamming FLARES the whole time. I got kicked for TKing twice, for launching point blank easy peasy locks against this SH, and the SH would just spam flares and lock would break and then reacquire allies.

I picked up a pair of the new mass drivers, but they wont load into the game at all. literally I got two S3 Gimbal mounts in my hud with no weapon attached to them.

Like what the actual fuck is this shit, 1.2 was working, PTU was working. 1.3 is a broken steamy turd.

From now on every single editor in "games journalism" is rigorously checking every article their writers put out on the subject. The difference between pre-Escapist and post-Escapist articles is already pretty telling. No one wants to be the next Escapist because CIG has already demonstrated they aren't afraid to escalate things when people are bullshitting. If he had just sent the letter, or the legal notice, then it wouldn't have been as effective.

Up to Privateer things were just dandy, WC 3 and 4 had production issues and performance was bad with current hardware, but they were good. This is the shit he's famous for, and you can't take it from him. He then went on to create Digital Anvil in 1996 to finally get to his wish to do real movies.

They shat out the Wing Commander film in 1999.

Well, it was also a games company, but Digital Anvil never developed any games by themselves. The only thing that they got out was Starlancer in collaboration with Warthog, and after that DA was sold to Microsoft in late 2000 due to insolvency - MS proceeded to run Chris out soon after as he was the main perceived cause of the studio's lack of ability to release *a* game (Freelancer). That was the last time he worked on games before SC. There were also two other games DA was working on, one being cancelled and the other handed over to Ubisoft later.

Chris then founded a production company in 2002 to once again try and pursue his dream of making movies. It died right away. So he tried again with Ascendant Pictures, which actually produced a couple decent movies (I really love Lord of War). In case you're wondering, Chris Roberts had little creative input on these, but hey, his name shows up as producer, so they're totally his movies, right?

But the dream didn't last long because again due to insolvency they broke a deal with Kevin Costner in 2004, for which they finally settled in 2008 and that sort of killed Ascendant Pictures. They *barely* managed to release a few turds that were already far in development, but for all other purposes the company was dead.

Then in 2012 he started working on Star Citizen.

So yeah, I'd say that the assessment of 'ran his last few game projects into the ground' and 'ran his last few movie projects into the ground' are both accurate.

Inheriting your velocity is just plain sensible, but I would prefer an arming distance to a lag time. Doesn't seem like the latter would really stop you if you had any sense of timing

Even modern ~180km+ BVR missiles only have a burn time of a few seconds. The rest they just coast and use existing momentum to correct into the target, they don't make multiple passes like SC missiles do.

With the Merlin, my secret is the loadout I advised, and great throttle control. When you are behind a target, remember you are faster at turning and speeding.

Max your throttle behind a target, and when you get within the 1500m range, reduce throttle to 80%, and zoom using the middle mouse button, then shred the shit out of their ship.

After having done a few squadron flights with TS, I can tell you that the game changes entirely.

'Squadron Battle' is just BR with non-targets.

Everyone is currently playing lone-wolf, and using Merlins / other manouverable ships like that works in that kind of envrionment.

But when you have people you can directly ask to come in and help, manouverable ships seem to fall really easily. Manouvering against two ship's fire is next to impossible in comparison to some shitter Hornet pilot who is just trying to spin on the spot to get a shot off at you.

Oh, and I've played in my Cutlass against an M50 before and that was fun, but it was slightly less interesting because of its lack of real firepower.

Yeah, Merlins are only great if they are in equal numbers. Only key to the Merlins success is to keep moving, and the guns will take care of the rest. I would say that 3 Merlins would win easily against 3 Hornets if they focused their fire. Hornets focusing on a Merlin isn't shit. I just spam Q and E when more than one person is on me, and they can't do shit. Merlin's speed can handle being outnumbered.

Once you bring in Gladiuses, that shit goes right out the window.

Just tried Arena Commander for the first time in months, only tried mouse but on my 325a it was fucking unplayable, as bad as I can ever remember it being. In about 5 minutes of playing I couldn't kill a single Scythe.

Is the 325a just broken now, or are there some settings I need to toggle for mouse play to make it possible to hit anything? Gonna try with HOTAS next.

Many other people getting back into the game had this problem as well, since they changed the default aiming mechanic when no one was looking (too hard)

People just don't understand how to fight them.

Besides, the Merlin can't jump. Its a parasite fighter. It being fairly strong in local space is alright. Avenger, and the Gladius especially are far easier to hit, but more importantly are fucked if you get a good burst on them. Clip a wing of a Gladius and it suffers on both manouvering and firepower, and its then even easier to finish off.

I used to go 3 Omni VIs on my 300 series, I always try to get three of the same gun because it's so much easier to land hits that way.

Game idea: Internal ship sound management, Multicrew only.

Basically the idea would be that you can manage a sound system on your ship in various degrees, for example music or general communication. While the latter in organized groups is usually done with 3rd party software, I can imagine that it would be quite immersive if you could blare your music throughout the Retaliator or what not while flying with random people.

Both are solid points. Even if I can kick ass in a Merlin with the right loadout, I can't do anything (such as leave combat) in the PU unless I'm near a station or a ship that can dock (snub) fighters (Constellation, Idris, Endeavor, etc.)

I really hope that the Merlin's stats stay where it is.

I have only heard a few people who had a Cutlass Blue, and I hear that for a multi-crewed ship, it flies like a paper cannon.

If I were you, and you had disposable income to throw, I would get the Andromeda. The Merlin kicks ass in AC, and I think that the Constellation will never be completely nerfed in the future, due to being Chris' baby (from being his favorite small multi-crew ship, and it's from RSI, and lastly, a shit-load of people have it).

Got a buff in 1.3, still flies pretty clumsily without Boost, but with boost its one of the fastest turners, and it has a massive tank / recharge rate.

Very good armament potential that rivals a SH (especially with that gimballed S4)

Downsides are its signature is high and it has a large cross section, making it a large target and easily trackable by all missiles, especially CS.

So the bug is if you try and move components from one ship to another, you only are allowed to fly the first ship in your hangar, and only with the default load out.

Also REC components are not working in spectrum matches, though that is something that they apparently fixed but the bug has reappeared again.

If you use default loadouts or components you actually own, it still works. I think REC components still work in drone sim too though I haven't tested it.

As far as I am aware, both. The issue isn't the shield or the armour, its how quickly bits can be shot off once damaged. That said I haven't flown one myself in AC for a long time so I'm just repeating what others have said. In terms of shield power its the tankiest ship, but shields apparently mean almost nothing in 1.3 due to how powerful ballistics are right now.

Its likely the Prowler just has a really low signature that means it can get very close before detection.

I think the Reliant and the Mustang both count as that kind of ship, though both of them have special technological features that are hyped to hell, it's mostly marketing. If you look at the size of them, and what they do, there is a reason why they are cheaper than other ships.

Well, once you get into a sci-fi setting where space travel is commonplace, you'd expect ships to be more resilient as opposed to how it is in the real world where they're built to exact specs and failure can be catastrophic. And if they're tough use for the everyday consumer, then you'd expect them to remain functional even if the interior/exterior starts getting worn out due to age, like cars or commercial planes from cheaper airlines.

Plus the SQ42 demo they did completely shits on your argument by have the ship has steam and sparks all over. Because nothing spaceships love more than condensation on electronics and exposed fire hazards.

if the mav thrusters are fucky then yeah, obviously that should be fixed so they're workable. I think thats an issue with almost all manouverable ships, though.

From what I've heard you have to be careful with your power consumption if you mount energy-hungry S2s on it, and I think thats fine.

Thats where the balance was before, they just broke it heavily trying to balance the power and thruster consumption though.

It's always meant to be a fighter analogous to the A-Wing, the racing shit just came afterwards. It's called the M50 Interceptor for a reason, and they've gone on record saying it is meant to be both a fighter and a racer multiple times.

The issue at the moment is the handling is completely fucked, the balance with energy on S2 guns works but at the expense of them breaking the rest of the ship.

They do more damage than any S2 and have one of the highest weapon velocities. Unless you're mounting ballistics there isn't any reason not to do so.
