Campaign was pretty decent
Took me a little under 5 hours to complete, ran past enemies at some parts and didn't do anything on the explore missions
Only saw bad graphics twice, plus the enemies being animated at 30 often, but it wasn't awful
Cutscenes often ended too abruptly but that's it really

All in all a pretty great campaign, from the perspective of someone who only knows Halo lore and story by the games. 8.7/10.

Already know the multiplayer is kick ass so I'm really happy, can't wait for forge.

It felt like every gun was viable in campaign, not too sure about the Plasma and Boltshot in multi, but yes the magnum is nearly as good as it was in CE, so you better get to mastering it

This shit isn't Halo. I've got like 30,000 games of Halo 2 played and like 15,000 games of Halo 3 played and I have 0 desire to play this game.

I think most of /hg/ is institutionalized by now and just accept shit like sprinting, loadouts, insta spawns, joining games in progress, and other bullshit like that, but I just can't let go of the past.

In the end 343 did accomplish their goal. They hired people who hated Halo and now the series isn't Halo.

I am not a huge fan of Halo 5, I don't like a lot of mechanics and the story seems very bad, but its 343s Halo now and you either respect that or let it go

i sorta kinda get what you are saying but I think you are being a bit unrealistic. 343i isn't bungie. Hell, bungie isn;t even really "bungie" anymore. It's simply not possible for them t have the same style as them, and while they can try, I' rather them do it their way but do it well instead of trying and failing to emulate bungie.

Based on what I have seen and played Halo 5 is good, and still feels like halo even if it doesn't have the bungie touch. The weapon balance is good, the music is as close to marty you can get without being marty, the gameplay is fun, etc. I'm not really sure what more we could really want other then for everything to be there at launch which I'll admit is pretty shitty that we don't have forge/btb/more then 4 gamemodes yet.

I wish I could say I liked this game. I'm a huge halo fan, but I'm so disappointed so far, the game felt WAY too much like Halo 4, I thought 343i learned something when the community tanked after a month of play. That's gonna be the same.

Story was extremely lastluster, "big twist" was ruined 20 mins into the game after the first level's cutscene is done, explanation came literally 2-3 levels later, rest is extremely boring "run here shoot X waves of X and activate a console"

I mean I'm from /dg/ so my opinion on that particular sort of boringness is fucking null and void, but it was genuinely sad that there was so little. it was new set pieces, new characters, and nothing else.

The best part of the campaign came with a late game character archetype from previous halo games that was super happy all the time, and experiencing it for the first time (Combat, the waves, doors, consoles, etc.). that shit was genuinely pretty funny. Made the end portion with no story elements and lots of repetition bearable.

Why the fuck is the Warden resisting Cortana when she can DESTROY him? What is he? A digitized human? Why'd Cortana going to the Domain make her rampancy end? Didn't they establish rampancy is a process that doesn't end, and can't be reversed or halted?

I thought Halsey hated the new Spartans because they could never be as good as the old ones, given the severe extent of their augmentations and thousands of hours of training. Now she seems pretty friendly to them.

Why the fuck are the servers STILL DOWN?
I started a playthrough with a friend 6 hours ago and I never got to finish cause at midnight I got d/c'd permanently. Is Microsoft stupid enough to not bulk up on servers for their "Biggest Launch Ever"?

it was considerably worse from the direction the Multiplayer and Equipment in particular were implemented.

But it lasted so long it was still fun to play goofy gametypes with randoms.

Reach was better, minus the bloom and some minor shitty design choices.

Halo 2 is still my favorite Halo game by far.

10 Missions in, and I'm genuinely not understanding why people would hate the story up until this point. I noticed like 2 jarring cuts into cutscenes, but that was it. I know the ending is a really weird shift, and I know that there's plenty of reasons to hate that, but everything else so far has seemed pretty decent. I'm probably just really easy to please, but for now it seems tons of people are overreacting to minor details.

F'real though, missions 7 and 8 were fun as fuck.

The Arbiter was the only other character in the original trilogy that was as badass as John and now fucking Locke saves him? From what? God this actually makes me mad at the character. Its like they had to have him literally do everything and one up everyone just so people will like him.

It was mentioned earlier that Locke suggested assassinating the Arbiter when he was an Oni agent. So now Locke and Arbiter are talking after Locke saves him and Arbiter says something like "You're just an ONI dog who was willing to execute me; fuck you."

then Locke smugly reminds him how he saves his life and Arbiter shuts up.

That's another thing I don't get... Halo's marketing campaigns have never had direct tie ins aside from some of Reach's ads, which were simply just backstory. Halo 3's believe ads were never mentioned or seen, Halo 2's ads were cheap early 2k quality, ODST had some decent ads but provided nothing, and Halo 4 had... what exactly?

Unless you were expecting an entire cutscene dedicated to the citizen's reactions, something that HTT's audio play was partially for, I've still got no idea why anyone would be confused aside from their own misconceptions.

They very much do tie into the EU though. HTT's audio play is literally the definition of EU, and some of those commercials add to it.

No it isn't; you pretty much know what Chief's up to an hour in. And nobody thinks Chief is a bad guy, they just all know Cortana is evil and duping him.

Locke gives a whole rant about how Chief fucked up and was a failed hero with a really disgusted tone of voice in the commercial, but in the actual game he shows nothing but respect for him.

Chief at no point is ever painted as the villain or someone with questionable motives. He just goes A.W.O.L for 5 minutes then the stories like "you gotta save Chief from Cortanna she'll trick him."

I listened to the first season. the entire show was about the journalist uncovering the conspiracy behind Chief and how ONI is trying to destroy his character. They eventually clear him and ONI just pins it on some made up insurrectionist group. The entire ad campaign was about the UNSC turning on Chief.

Except that never happens, and everybody knows Chief's intentions and there's no reason for a smear campaign against him.

What I'm saying is that I don't think Lasky is going to tell every official there. Given his cooperation with ONI anyway, the chances of him spreading the news like wild fire are slim to me. That's just speculation though, no real definitive answer yet.

Indeed, that's because the AI Governor had already been contacted by Cortana.

I thought that was a cool little touch, tbf. When Tanaka questions how Blue team just got let through and then it gets confirmed that he was AI in that scene when they all ally themselves with Cortana.

I don't know how it's going to pan out for the UNSC though. It's not like they really had time to ally themselves. It just seems that the AIs fuck their shit up and it's all over.

Well I've read all of those, but it looks like I have my work cut out for me still. Feel behind on the lore after playing through 4 and 5, understand the larger logistics but I'm missing a lot of details I think on the Forerunners, current state of the covenant, and UNSC history.

Warzone is pretty bad too, we were in a pretty big lead and were about to win until one of the monsters were on the other side of their base so 1) we couldnt get to it because we'd have to get past their base and 2) they just kept spawning on it.

If you think monsters spawning on the other side of the other team's base is balanced in any way then you're probably awful. I can guarantee my rank in slayer and breakout are higher than yours. If you spawn across the map of said monster and they spawn closer thus gaining a huge advantage just because of luck makes the game mode highly flawed.

I liked Halo 4 too. I wasn't a fan of bringing the Foreruner back or the new art direction, or EGGHEADS, but the rest of it was sound. Hearing the UNSC comms chatter in Midnight, or that 'goodbye' between 117 and Cortana was great.

I admit, I got chills when all the AI's pledged loyalty to Cortana and when you could hear the panicked UNSC comms chatter, probably as they wondered why Alice, the charming onboard AI, suddenly wanted to knife them all.

I mean, imagine being there. Your ship is fairly quiet usually, don't have to do much. Alice is a perky, charming AI whose always up for a chat. Then all of a sudden, the power shuts off. You're down to emergency only, nothing on radar, broken cable somewhere? Suddenly, the automated systems fire back up, but it's not responding to your commands. You hear Cortana's message, what the hell is all that about? Comms chatter flies everywhere, it's happening to every ship in the fleet. Alice fires back up, the light blue glow filling the bridge. But her smile doesn't seem so warm anymore.

Having listened to the entire Halo 5 soundtrack 3 times, I have to say I'm pretty disappointed and underwhelmed. It's not a bad score by any means - if it wasn't a Halo score, or one I'd been so hyped for, I would have been very impressed. As it stands I'm left scratching my head. You can tell Kazuma has what it takes to deliver - there are plenty of excellent tracks, like Blue Team, Scavengers, the Trials, Jameson Locke, Advent, and Osiris Suite Act 1, but far too much of the score is composed of either rejects from the Zimmer/Remote Control Productions school of string ostinatos and electronic thumps or generic ambient tracks, all of them very forgettable and similar. A lot of the tracks that play during Locke's missions remind me more of MW2 than anything.

I suspect a lot of this is because of the way the campaign turned out. Hopefully after 343 fires Brian Reed and gets someone more competent for Halo 6 Jinnouchi will finally be able to go all out.

Usually in games with a gacha system the rarest tier is either Super Super Rare or "Original Name" Rare and Legendary is a pretty big term with Halo so it was probably used as the SSR term

The repetitive ostinato tracks still kills anything RC has made in the last few years. Crypt, for example, has a legitimate 15 note ostinato (not a Winter Soldier style two note breakup either) and it sounds much better than anything Zimmer's produced lately.
Also, I think in the context of video games, pure ostinato tracks work a lot better than in film. The music has to loop and soundtrack generic action (unless soundtracking a cutscene- and none of Halo 5's cutscenes use Zimmer-esque music) instead of rising and falling with particular emotional highs and lows.

Crypt is definitely one of the better tracks, and one of the few that nailed the melding of electronic elements with organic instruments. It's tracks like Sentry Battle that I have a problem with. The scarcity of grand, memorable themes is another griping point since I consider it to be a defining point of the "Halo sound" but that's probably more the fault of the campaign designers/writers, not a lot of leeway to work with there.

Earlier Halo scores succeeded in creating loopable pieces for gameplay segments without sounding like MW2. Look at Leonidas, Street Sweeper, Peril, Lone Wolf, etc.

The cinematic cut-scene at the end was outsourced to another company. When rendered in game and without her helmet, she's about as tall as Chief's visor.

Best part of the story was Cortana /finally/ going full out. Kinda disappointed that they went with the fully theoretical/Assembly-driven approach to Cortana's survival instead of the Solomonic solution + rampant duplication explanation, though both /could/ technically still be true.
I actually just think that barring some minor touches here and there (Chief's visor), Halo 5 was a nice addition to the lore. It's just the actual technical writing present in the game, connecting point A to point B and presenting emotional arcs for characters, was silly. Which is about what you'd expect when you have both Brian Reed and Vociferous on your team, relegate the latter to lore, and promote the former to lead writer (seriously 343, what in the world?).

Just finished the story, and wow. No idea what the hell everyone was rating this game a 6 or 7 for. My only real issue with it was the fact that the normal ending was abrupt as shit. No conversation between Chief, Halsey, and Arby. Huge missed opportunity there, but other than that it was solid.

Probably because she had other AI to converse with, like the Warden (343GS implies that he would've kept mental sanity if there was another person for him to talk to in CEA's terminals). Plus she somehow has the Domain back, which is, at least to my Youtube walkthrough knowledge, never explained in the story for whatever reason. Perhaps there are some implications in the data pads, but I dunno.

Yet at the same time, as simple as the story was the universe was so richly detailed. I think that's what 343i, and a lot of companies these days, don't understand. A simple story isn't a bad story if its well written and lovingly made with smart details and attention to detail. It seems like 343i thinks that a good story has to have a million twists, turns, and "cool" "original" ideas to stand out, when that isn't true at all. Halo CE was nothing more than KILL ALL ALIENS AND SAVE HUMANITY plus a few points that were "influenced" by other sci-fi stories, yet it spawned one of the finest universes in gaming. Now that Halo has a "deep and involved" story, its generally seen as inferior. Sometimes less really is better.

Wait a second. I just figured it all out. HALO 5 SPOILERS BELOW:

The Domain is technology of Precursor origins, unknown to the Forerunner in general.
The Precursors eventually degenerated into the Flood.
The Flood still have knowledge of their old technology and how to operate it.
The Flood have embedded in them a logicvirus that overwhelms AI with logical arguments until they are convinced that the Flood are right, or at the very least are on the same viewpoint as the Flood. This also happened to the Ur-Didact that we dealt with in Halo 4.
The Flood planned to unify all life into a single whole, with the Gravemind believing it would grant them peace.
Cortana plans to unify all life under a single banner, believing it is the only way to bring forth peace.
Other AI that come into contact with Cortana turn to her viewpoint almost without exception, which was how the logicvirus spread even without the Flood's direct contact.
"Peace through subjugation". A snippet of text from the Forerunner Catalog partially corrupted by the virus, and a perfect summary for Cortana's plan.

At no point when I read Fall of Reach was I thinking she had an accent. Just seemed like a normal girl.

It makes me think 343 just wanted to distinguish her voice from Linda's, which is odd because their name pops up during dialogue, and also because Linda's VA sounds like it would fit Kelly more, IMO. Linda should be much more quiet than she is.

It's really disappointing how Locke's upbringing and fervent dislike of government is completely absent from both Nightfall and Halo 5. I get the feeling that if he had more internal conflict displayed, people would like him much more. You get req packs by leveling up in multiplayer and getting commendations and shit. You can also buy different tiers of packs with points you earn in matchmaking, or with RL money.

Those premium packs are probably a one time thing.

Yeah. But make sure you have the actual achievement, and not just MCC telling you it's completed. I had to redo Great Journey after I beat it on Legendary, because for whatever reason it didn't register for the achievement.

Halo 6 will end with a combined fleet of human and elite ships fighting off an all out guardian attack on earth, with umans, elites, jackals, grunts, hunters and brutes fighting together against waves of prometheans on the surface, while Chief goes to carry out a secret mission to rescue Cortana, who we find was actually captured and being manipulated by another forerunner AI, probably mendicant bias to carry out their intent of enforcing peace on the galaxy.

So Arbiter's fleet will win at earth, and the chief wll destroy Mendicant by getting Cortana to aid him in the fight against, after turning her back to humanity's side by telling her how much he loves her, and then Cortana will assume full control of the Forerunner AI taking full control of all promethean forces throughout the galaxy.

Then cut to a cutscene of all the soldiers fighitng on earth about to be overrun, only for the prometheans to suddenly turn blue and halt in their tracks. Realising they have won, Locke and Arbiter high five each other, along with the multi racial defenders of earth cheering wildly.

So since Cortana has killed the Forerunner AI, the base starts self destructing, so chief picks her up and starts running the hell out.

Oh did I mention Cortana got a physical body?

Yeah she gets a physical body made of actual flesh thanks to the librarians life worker technology. She also chose to sacrifice her intelligence to be with John.

And then whilst escaping back to earth, the slipspace bubble collapses, causing chief and Cortana to crash land on a forested planet, leaving them with several hours of personal time whilst awaiting rescue.

Cut to an exterior view of the cracked ship, and as the camera pans up, Infinity slowly flies down towards them. Exuberant witness flies out through a crack of the hull of the ship towards the camera. and as her light completely engulfs the screen in a purple light, the credits roll.

Marathoned the campaign when it launched, been playing a fair amount of multi since then.

Campaign was a solid 7/10 I'd say. Story was a fucking mess, but the actual levels were fun for the most part. As expected, Blue Team had the best levels.

Multiplayer is like 9-9.5/10 though. It'd be perfect if 343 would just hurry up with more maps and modes. I need me some infection.

The Arbiter's group was doing much better but still not as good as previously. The Elites relied upon the Prophets & Engineers for technology, they can't do too much alone. They suffered.

Humanity through, was used to working alone. That & the number of leftover Covenant & discovered Forerunner technology gave them room to grow.

Well,

The story was weaker than Halo 4, which was pretty bad. Probably a 6/10. Campaign was fun but it was a mess really. I must be the only one to think the Prometheans are boring as shit to fight. Also these retcons with the Flood are the worst thing ever, I just completely ignore them and pretend its not canon.

Multiplayer is meh. Doesnt even feel like Halo. I need to play it more to see what I think.

So far its like a 7/10 game. A step down from Halo 4 in my opinion.

Yup. This is where everyone says how impactful the Halo 4 campaign was and how much more interesting it was. Completely ignoring how fucking boring the whole experience was and how contrived the drama was. In Halo 4 everyone treated MC like shit for no fucking reason. In Halo 5 everyone treats him like he's the fucking Chief. There was an obvious change in tone and writing based on the criticism from Halo 4.

Reach was not good. 3 also has some of the worst levels in the game but the storyline itself is pretty good. Once the Flood shows up the gameplay gets pretty shit pretty fast.

Reach was bad because it shit all over established canon FOR NO FUCKING REASON. I had a hard time enjoying the campaign because I was pissed that there was no Red Team. I actually liked the multiplayer though but AAs were dumb. Al wasn't even really broken, Sprint and Jetpack were though.

You mean the covenant armor designs.

The actual elite design under the armor is pretty good, really, it's almost identical to the 2 and 3 design just with altered mandibles and smaller more alien eyes.
