Left or Right? Because a lot of the backgrounds in that game always looked kinda bad and kinda blurry. That was the trade-off with that gen. Great character models and lower quality environments.

I think the Squaresoft games are a bit tricky. Ryphecha told me about a few other games that rely on weird quirks. So far only Crash Bandicoot is playable, Spyro freezes just after the intro.

Gran Turismo crashes almost straight away with an invalid GPU command but that might be because I haven't implemented the MDEC yet.

If you know of PS1 games that don't have a pre-rendered intro requiring the MDEC I'm interested.

That Pentium is pretty much a Wolfdale Core 2 Duo with less cache and slightly slower FSB. It ought to be able to handle bsnes for most games.

I know a bunch of games that don't have any FMV before you can play the actual game.

Ace combat 3 (US+EU although EU doesn't have FMVs at all unlike the US version, JP has FMVs fucking everywhere)

Ape Escape (EU version has antipiracy bullshit that blocks all input on the title screen)

Break Out

C-12: Final Resistance

Crash 1-3 + CTR + Bash

Gran Turismo 2 (Simulation Disc only the other one has an FMV intro, interesting thing to note is that the model viewer in the showroom is HiRes while the race are standard res)

SLUS-01423 (new game has an fmv, simulator mode doesn't)

Raycrisis

Raystorm

Rayman 2

Spyro 1-3 (3 might be a pain in the ass simply because of it's antipiracy)

Oh and probably some games from the superlite 1500 and simple 1500 series, although those are JP only for the most part.

Pretty sure there's also a picross game among those, although that might be from the superlite 2000 series on PS2

I use the RA port, it's pretty much the best emulator if you don't care about >muh HD since it has the highest compatibility and accuracy of all PS1 emulators right now, it won't work with bad disc images like ePSXe would and lacks some advanced function no$PSX and pSX have but that's something you probably won't care about if you only play games.

It's not hard at all. If you want to go full retard, just play Mednafen through RetroArch. It needs proper cue sheets for games, though. Most rom sites out there have bad cue sheets and need some editing. There's a guide on the wiki. Very simple.

I use emuparadise for PSX games.

It's perfectly fine, but you'll have to do cue sheet editing for most of them. rutracker has clean uploads, uncapped speed, no captcha and essentially every game ever, so there's really no reason not to use it.

Okay so I have winLAME open. The medafen tutorial says to convert the mp3's in the cue to .wav. But everytime I try to drag the cue it says error opening input file and sys im trying to open the .bin

I doubt frame limiter was off, since it shows 60.00 VI/s. Judging by your description, it sounds like some sort of vsync is enabled.

So I'm having an issue with FBA and RetroArch. I'm trying to play Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (the second revision with extra characters), so I got the Euro version, which is in English. I KNOW I had this working before, probably on an older build. However, now on the latest build, the game runs, but it's in Japanese.

I know the Jap version needs to be present as a parent, but before I just needed to load the Euro ROM and it would be in English. Now regardless of which I choose, it's always the Japanese one that loads. What gives? Should I just go back to the older build?

That's true. Without the frame limiter, MK4 flutters between 60.0 and 60.5fps therebouts. The only other thing I can think of is LLE graphics, but the game's running too fast for that, IMO. MK4 LLE with GLideN64 runs at 10VIs on my PC.

Maybe the poster should post their hardware.

That looks like some scaling issue. It's likely emulation on a CRT. You could probably replicate it by either adding a blur pass before the CRT passes, or by replacing an existing blur in a CRT preset with a stronger one. 4k is a given, but you can just downscale.

Does RA let you shrink one of the screens, like Drastic does? The screens are very very rarely of equal value, after all. That menu shit could be a little thumbnail in the corner for that game, for example.

Nah, you can only switch the layout between a few presets in RA. You can also use the quick switch feature to get one screen in fullscreen, but it's blurry as shit, considering it's a handheld system.

I've been using emulators for years, but up until the past 8 or so it was just, figure out what works and use it.

Now everytime I dip into here just to lurk there is a new level of concern, how it looks when it emulates. That's really interesting.

How does one make a change like the one in OP's picture? I've got a hankering for Vangrant Story.

Is it possible to do that on any emulator, or just higher powered machines like PCs? (I have many devices just for emulating old shit)

PCSX:R and ePSXe have plugins that can increase the internal resolution. The SotN screenshot is an off-screen shot of a CRT and can only be replicated in UHD resolutions. Looks like the PSP version of SotN included in the Rondo of Blood remake, with xBRZ set to 2x.

You'll want to primarily use RetroArch if you want to get into shaders.

I don't see that at all. I don't see any xBRZ and it would be pretty annoying to get the psp port to output to a CRT properly, though I guess not impossible.

Well you can set it in game to be letterboxed (it's worth noting that the psp itself scales it horizontally with bilinear regardless) and then use use custom viewports to crop it. I'd personally just play it in mednafen.

There's still no xBRZ and no indication that it's the PSP port in that image.

What's the deal with Dolphin's resting point on sticks being horribly off?
Windows' game controller thing shows things perfectly fine, as do other programs. Only Dolphin displays my controller as having a huge nudge to the right side.
Is it possible to reset this within Dolphin somehow?

If you feel like diving in and doing real emulation work there's a lot of things to be done. MDEC and SPU emulation come to mind. If you've never written emulators it might be a bit daunting though. The CDROM is completely fucked as well but really you don't want to bother with that, it'll drive you crazy. You can always boot up a random game, see if it crashes and then try to fix it...

I'd also like to implement the libretro API at some point but I have no idea what's the amount of work involved to do that.

Note that the emulator is written in Rust which is a very young language, don't expect to find a job writing Rust code for a few years at least, and that's only if it ends up being successful. If you want to do low level programming you *have* to learn C at some point.

I figured it out, actually. Dolphin bound "Axis X-+" to the right stick, rather than just "Axis X+".
After I corrected that, it began working perfectly fine.

The GPU is probably the part of the code that's the most accessible without digging deep into the PlayStation's hardware behaviour. It's mostly frontend code in a way. There are many constraints but the interface with the rest of the hardware is well defined.

But I mostly played RPGs. The only Megaman game I ever played as a kid was Megaman X and Megaman Legends. Both had a lot more mobility in it than this.

I use OBS. After I record, I use WebmforRetards to convert it into a silent webm. Seems to work well enough. Do some research on what the best bit rates are for the size you want to make.

It took me a little bit to figure out what bitrates I needed for certain sizes while also trying to stay under the 3 MB size limit.

"CRT" shaders that are just a bunch of black lines are stupid. No one outside of hardcore turbo nerds have PVMs, and most people don't care about them. People use CRTs for games, and they look rounded with tiny invisible lines. That is what people remember from childhood, and that is what people see when they use CRTs today.

Depends on the screen size. Those 14 inch PVMs that are common would only require a just few feet before your eyes "blend" the scanlines together. Top that off with being bright, vibrant, and sharp and you have a really good retro game display.

It's shit. Your only viable option is CatSFC, and that requires copious amounts of frameskip to be even remotely playable, and even then a lot of games don't run well. And then there's the issue with resolution, as you mentioned.

If you're gonna emulate on a Nintendo handheld, the New 3DS is what you want. It can run CatSFC Plus (which has a superior audio engine) full speed on a lot of games without frameskip, and there's still lots of optimizations that can be done on it.

Most PVMs don't do 31KHz. PC CRTs are 31KHz and will display 240p linedoubled to 480p, which tends to look blocky. However they can display 240p natively by inserting black lines at 480p or using a video mode with doubled refresh rate and half resolution (i.e. 240p 120Hz), at which they tend to look like a PVM/BVM with high TVL (TV Lines, a measure of how much horizontal resolution can be displayed)

You can try it, but I personally think anything other than nearest neighbor looks like shit at such a low resolution. If you use bilinear, the blur is painfully obvious from one scanline to the next. Haven't messed with the smoothing filters/shaders, but I don't like those anyway. NTSC filters might be ok, haven't messed with those too much at 480p.

I do strongly recommend you setup a superwide resolution, though. There's a guide on the wiki for that. It's mainly for 240p/480i emulation, but just follow the steps until it gets to the part about adding a scanline/interlacing shader, and stop there.

That's not really how it works, one of the libretro people needs to get in contact (not that hard on IRC) with him and ask him if he's up to the task.

The problem is, your filter is not the definitive one. When you have a pic like that you want to show the raw output so that others can later apply their own filters to see it in different ways. As it is, your pic is not extensible enough because you have already filtered it.

Breddy gud actually. It accomplishes the goal of rounding pixels and blooming bright areas without looking overly blurry or inserting thick black lines.

Is retroarch's UI a performance hog for anyone else? Only happens with OpenGL video driver (with all menu drivers). Been like this for months IIRC.
This is without anything loaded, on an OC'ed 6600k. It's weird having my PC be quiet while emulating a game, then have the fan kick in when I open the menu.

Currently, I'm trying to set up to emulate using PSX, but I'm trying to get a Sixaxis DS3 controller to work before I do. I've got SCPMonitor running, and while my machine (Windows 10) picks up on the fact that I have a Playstation controller plugged in, PCS DS3 Monitor doesn't.

This is with the machine changed to a 440FX and CPU changed to a Pentium II Overdrive 333 MHz. BTW, this is before I changed it to allow for AGP bus multipliers, so it might be a little slower than the real thing.

Actually, it isn't too slow. It's just too slow at that resolution. I set Quake to 1024x768. At a smaller res, the game is perfectly playable.

That means you need more power to emulate it full speed so selecting the faster hardware in that emulator is not always better.

Why would you emulate Quake? There are numerous sourceports that are accurate, aren't there? Also, having that many desktop icons can use up (a little bit) of RAM.

FF games use a lot of framebuffer effects. All games with pre-rendered backgrounds like Jade Cocoon, Chrono Cross, FF and RE games require MDEC.

Just read that Capcom has found the 3D background files for RE0. They're now making proper 1080p backgrounds for the new HD release. This marks the first damn time that I know of where this has happened. Everyone else, including Capcom has had to release upscaled 2D backgrounds for their 2D/3D games.

RE1 PSX has 240p backgrounds that have been lost.

Remake GC/Wii has new 480p backgrounds. These have been lost as well. REmake HD, the new port either remakes the backgrounds or upscales them with a shitty filter.

RE0 promises to be the first true 2D/3D game with good HD backgrounds.
