you know SFV is fun and all, but this tourney has made it extremely glaring just how incredibly homologous SFV is wrt gameplay variety.

The mid and long ranges in this game are complete deadzones. There is just absolutely nothing going on at those ranges, and even sim looks like he's designed with mid and close range in mind.

This could be really, really bad for the game.

which character archetype do you gravitate towards in fighting games?
Zoner, grappler, rushdown, the allrounder etc.

Jumping LK nerfed (hitbox and hitstun)
Can't do the midscreen Passion Rope wallbounce anymore (Slizzard was right)

that means a few things changed already

firstly cross up lk instead of being a deep cross in combo is now a better grab mix up because the hit stun made it so you had to delay the throws a bit

i guess ex butt needs to be done as a reversal now on wake up and its nerfed as an option to eat jabs on reset combos

I started out trying to play defensive zoners but most of them are too one-track for me and I like versatile characters with strong space control the most

i.e. I prefer zoners but it's never a smart idea or potential option for that character to close distance I probably don't like them

Welp. This is their financial report from today.

Capcom literally cannot afford SFV to be a flop on the level of NG/2I. I think they will get good initial sales, but if the game ends up being too shallow then word of mouth is going to spread like absolute wildfire due to the prevalence of streams. If they can't maintain DLC sales from casuals then SFV will be fucked.

Capcom made too many mistakes (read: flops) last gen and it has cost them dearly in this one.

it does really just depend on how much marketing is done by sony

even if sfv is the worst game ever though I don't see any majors or pros dropping the game

all of them have a lot of time invested and have done a lot of building up to this point, they kind of have to keep running with it or admit they wasted tons of effort

In SFV, why do most Ken combos I've seen begin with c.MP before going to the b.MP-HP target combo? Crouching strong might have good range, but b.MP has awful range and won't link if you're standing more than six inches away when you land the MP.

I guess a better question might be: if this is my go-to (for some reason), then how do I get in the range where it works without getting jabbed away? Most people just mash crouching jab when I use the VSkill to run in after a slower move is blocked, and we all know jump-ins are stupid against people who actually know how to play.

I guess what I'm asking is: how do I Ken in SFV?

starting with cr.mp lets you actually hitconfirm your shit. You can do it off of b.mp only, because it has plenty of time to be cancelled into the s.hp, but cr mp is just better

Use plenty of v.skill cancelled into blocking, just to close in. Throw in the occasional stepkick but make sure you space it cause that shit is very negative unless you hit it with the very tip

But most importantly, wait for at least the next beta because what you have access to is a very old build and there's no real point it putting too much effort into learning that version of Ken

They are really removing the fun stuff from SFV.

Meh, it doesn't matter if I'm working on links with an outdated build. It's still good practice. For some reason some of them feel "right" to me and others are impossible. Could easily land E.Ryu's 1f links every time, but now I'm having trouble with something that can't be worse than 3f.

Oh look, easy combos. Loook this is sooo easy - I can mash the buttons and still link like a pro. You think easy combos make a game easy to play?

So far, I've not heard anyone talk about this - so I will. Just cos some well known "pro" player speaks out saying the game might be too easy - doesn't mean they're right:

This game's hard. Normals have less range and are slower ALL AROUND. That means you really gotta know HOW and WHEN to hit your buttons. Unlike SFIV (Ken's sweep is a sufficient example of that ), where you could press buttons from certain ranges, and not care about a punish most of the time..unless they had a crazy super or focused extremely well.

Combos and damage is higher. In SFIV you would have to be hit with a combo like 5 to 8 times to die. In this game..2 or 3 combos and you're stunned or very close to stun. Thereafter its only KO that awaits.

Stun. Stun is a big deal and I don't wanna repeat myself here but YOU WILL GET STUNNED MUCH MORE EASILY THAN YOU DO IN SF4.

No FADC for your DPs + MUCH higher punishes on DPs using Crush Counter combos.

No backdashing. If you got the balls to DP and gamble 40% of your life (due to reasons mentioned above) then do it. But know that, your only real option after that is to BLOCK. Sure you can jump and backdash, but that will only evade throws. Get meatied son. In SFIV you could backdash, focus backdash, DP FADC and all sorta.

With regard to stun, a lot of people are overlooking something really important: alpha counters (uhh, "V Reversals") can not only give you a little breathing room, they also massively reduce your stun bar. They're not that great other than that, but when you use it to get out of near guaranteed stun, they are a godsend.

ex knee is good to get in or close space quickly. also good in the corner.
you can do hk knee to end combos instead of uppercut, but they have to be standing and somewhat close for you to get all hits.
it's also generally good to push back people with anti-fireball moves even on block because it leaves you at a really favorable range while staying safe (lk knee spaced properly). remember, you're usually trying to not get cornered, so moving forward and contesting space safely with lk knee is very useful.

-2hp no more crush counter
-2hp without claw slower
-st lk/st mk to 2mp (claw off) do not work anymore.
-Stand HP to 2mp (claw off) : same
-Qcb HP to ex flying, do not juggle anymore ( I think now QCB hp is almost useless if you don't have V-trigger or CA, it's so hard to use it well.)
-claw off biggest combo: HK to target, isn't possible anymore, Hk don't even link with 2mp.

But well, at least I saw two buffs :
-V-trigget hits crouched opponents (really good !)
-6HP has less on whiff-recovery. (We can use it sometimes now)

yep, I never though it'd make it to Beta 3 even. st.HP claw is still a great hitconfirm move. st.hp x cancel combos, st.hp target/QCB whatever on block
My only real complaint is cr.HP not CCing, but frankly the rest of the stuff follows their design philosophy of not letting lights combo.

Vega still has all his pokes, and the trigger buff is nice, as well as a slightly improved mixup game. I disagree with QCB HP being a bad AA, it was actually pretty strong if you can anticipate jumps imo

Not really. It becomes a huge threat with super from anywhere on screen. The opponent can't jump or can't throw out any slow attack without getting hit by it on reaction.

Even fireballs are risky because of jump forward instant rose. It's easy 200 damage. Can't combo into super from the jump though.

Hahahahano. You can mash within 3 frames of the window and it'll work. Which doesn't matter because most moves barely have more than 5 active and recovery frames all told, which is why you can randomly mash during any move. It doesn't work when a move has something like 30 active frames. At that point you're actually going to need to learn how to hit the 3 frame window, and mashing is going to get you DPed. I work for a company closely involved with Evo and have spoilers for the Evo 2016 lineup

My company is paying the Cannon brothers to have these two games to be featured on stage at Evo. This doesn't mean they'll be tournament games but I think it'll at least be an exhibition match on the main stream.

Not really. Sure he doesn't have 20 special moves like Seth but he has way more normals than most characters and I find his normal mix-up game to be a lot of fun.

I mean if more special moves = more interesting then maybe Seth is the character for you but I the booms, flash kicks and all those normals are all I need.

I'm hoping they leave most of him intact, especially he was such a multiple playstyle character. Every good Guile I've ever seen has been just as capable of rushing down as they are keeping people out.

He'll probably get the Shoto treatment for V though where his special moves are garbage unless he hits V-Trigger.

I really hope they keep sonic boom at default speed. It'd actually be nice to have one character that at least when he throws a fireball and Necalli throws himself at a character while completely ignoring your fireball, Guile gets the chance to go back to safety, so the fireball isn't completely useless.

But knowing this game that's unlikely.

Also looking at Vanilla SFIV EVO matches makes it really clear that what really fucked up the game was the addition of more and more characters after only a year. I guess that's why SFV doesn't really give me hope since it seems like they're making the same mistakes.
