What do you really need to do to finish it? Music and finish the level? Maybe set up a "infinite runner" level generator where it just sends various enemies your way and small stretches of spike floors? You can do that in 24 hours.

You seriously can't think of a single reason why games in the past have allowed players to use two key binds for a given input? You must not be thinking hard.

There's no conceivable way for more control options to be a negative for the player if you implement them correctly. That said, having two key binds for everything isn't exactly "industry standard" and nobody really expects it, so whatever. I probably won't be putting the ability in my game so I wouldn't expect other people to do the same, but if you didn't want to do it in the first place then you shouldn't have needed help talking yourself out of it.

Again, only if they're implemented poorly, which is a fault of the developer and not of the concept of dual key binds.
*click bind slot 1 for given thing* *press key to be bound*
alternatively
*click bind slot 2 for given thing* *press key to be bound*
*click bind slot 1 for given thing* *click "unbind" button*
etc.

I didn't want to get into it but I've learned the basics of blender Blender, tried dicking around in Unity, Gamemaker, and Smilebasic, and I can't figure a single one of them out and I've made nothing of worth. I've followed several tutorials and books on each and I just feel overwhelmed, I've been at this for months and I can't figure it out on my own. I'm just copying what people are doing to make the basics, not learning how to do them myself. I just want to start off by making a simple game where I get a shape to move to the other side of the screen and I can't even figure out how to do that. Maybe you're right.

I'm honing my 3D modeling but the closest thing I could think of as an end goal would be something visually like Auto Modelista but good. On the side I'm working with 2D games and physics now. Never knew about JSRFI before, neat.

As it turns out, UE4's "Reimport" option is fucked and doesn't actually reimport assets properly.
I've spent all day trying to figure out why my UV layout wasn't updating and why I consistently had a missing face on my static mesh despite re-exporting in different fbx formats with different settings and reimporting every time to see no changes.

I had to delete the entire asset and import from scratch to get any updates to show.
Fuck.

Optimizations like storing attribute locations in vertex array objects are done internally.
When vulkan comes out, there will be different types of optimizations like creating command buffers.

I like how the term itself sounds but that sentence is bad. I'd generally avoid having characters refer to "power levels" (or other fairly abstract mechanics) in-game. Find another way to say it.

I don't think you realize how huge the difference is between programming with OpenGL and programming with Vulkan.

I recommend at least learning what goes into programming in one of the new APIs if you ever plan on switching to one so that you know where to draw the line between "this can stay" and "I will have to rewrite this" so you can plan accordingly.

I wouldn't take it as too "representative" for what a dx12 renderer should look like as it's inflexible, doesn't make use of bundles, and is all one one thread, even though structure for multithreading is set in place, sort of, at least for the coarse simulation/rendering systems division

here I am, a day left in the halloween jam, with only a level editor, above-programmer graphics and sound, and a few juiced mechanics.
I had to gut the entire story, bosses, and spooky parts to make it this far, and its only 2 beginner levels.

I'd start out harder. No point fucking around with easy shit, it just makes the scores bigger.

Subjective, but try having the enemies move faster - so they hit the broom at the same rate, but are visually moving faster to get there. It got kinda crowded when a bunch came from the same direction.

Some kind of audio feedback when you hit a thing would make it easier to get into the rhythm too, but that'd probably conflict with the music.
Of course, if you could time them TO the music that'd be pretty sick too.

Also your UI could use better fonts and there's a couple of alignment issues but that doesn't matter. The game's neat

and I decided to add the puff of smoke and the broom knockback to make up for the lack of sound. I'll make the spawnrate constant so it might match the tempo of the music better, and only have the speed increase.

The fonts were random. and I'll be working on consistency and alignment in the future.

So I have a code that makes levels from reading the colour information from image files (in this case, a 32x32px png). Implemented what I though was an elegant way to place pillars by checking 4 pixels at a time and placing a pillar in the middle if there is at least one adjacent floor wall tile. It's giving me this error though, and I can't think of an obvious fix right away. And it's one of those errors that doesn't prevent me from running the game, so idk if I should even worry about it. Suggestions?

That's a common solution. I've heard it referred to as the "rubber ducky" method. Figure out how you'd explain what you're doing to a rubber duck (someone who doesn't understand coding/isn't involved in your coding). It helps.

The problem isn't that they're tough, it's that they're an unavoidable stage hazard with no interaction other than shooting at it for 3 seconds until it dies. Music was neat, if a bit unoriginal (I enjoyed it though, nice touch). Boss is great, but a bit too easy (and a boss battle track would benefit it)

eh I'm at that stage tbh, I've gone through enough "your engine is obsolete" and "our design requirements are too high" combined with the general heading of my life that led to me being the man I am today to just not think it worth it anymore

I legit vowed to myself silently to never open hammer again because it's simply not worth it. the dream is dead. life has ended. No one is gonna play my work. if they do, they'll just complain. it's not worth it to learn a new engine either because of two parts GROUND FLOOR OR NOT IN AT ALL and one part indie games just being all pointless schlock. I'd go back to school for architecture or civil planning or something but eh fuck it, too late

bone still comes from the skeleton's right if you face left

I'd add something to when you die - even just a tiny pause and a sound effect would be better than jumping straight back to start

final boss seemed to be getting hit by the bones every frame? maybe that's just how the sound effect works, that was what I thought was happening

I like the art style and the gameboy intro made me smile

I just downloaded Unity and I wish to try to make a "RPG Maker" kind of game on my own. (I hate the RPG Maker system)

My long therm plan is to make a 3D Harvest Moon 1 clone in low poly for fun.

I know some C because I'm an engineer and code some stuff on it for simulation and calculations on high complexity systems.

I used to have some fun on Actonscript 1.0/2.0 back in the days too.

Is this even possible or should I literally study coding way before trying to do anything?

2) C++ takes more than a few tutorials to use, you need to learn how to actually program, not just copy scripts from other people without understanding how the Sine function works
3) U5 tutorials are needed because majority of it's users are new to actual programming, unlike the majority of UE4 users

Fucking hell, seriously. I was so confused, and to a point I still am, about some of the workings of UE4. I would read through Sepples books and it would all make sense. Then I would use UE4's C++ and my felt retarded by not understand half of what was happening.

UE4 seemed more approachable at first because you can quickly make a simple game with blueprints... But doing anything complex there requires such complex mazes of blueprints that it seems counterproductive

i got arbitrary polygon lines to have properish draw orders. it may seem simple but its isnt because the line cant be a single object (since im ordering them based on y position), so i have to subdivide each line into multiple objects and coordinate them from a parent one

i made videos like first impression/review style for every game in the halloween gamejam so far.

Spooky Ghosty felt buggy it didn't look finished when I tried it so I didn't do anything with it and The Spooky Point and Click Adventure didn't work in Chrome the picture in index was really silly so I just gave up on it.

Ok so I played through this maybe five times cause I kept dying. Game overs are a failure of the game designer, so your next version should remove this.

the first four times I played, I didn't get a set of items I could combine into a trap before getting overrun by enemies. I am aware this is kind of the point of an RNG game so it's not really a complaint, but it's relevant because the *fifth* time I got the holy cross.

The holy cross is considerably fuckin' better than the bear traps. I don't know if it's intentional that you can stand inside of it and be safe from vampires forever, but you can.

the only other trap I got was the shock pool, which seemed pretty neat but didn't make me invincible so I fucking died. See my first point.

Bear traps take forever to place for just one vampire kill, especially considering the holy cross and shock pools went up faster. Plus, if you're going to lock down the player while they're placing them, you NEED an indicator of why that's happening.

Honestly though, most of it is minor shit holding back a decent game. Buff bear traps, add a "doing shit" indicator, maybe get a longer music loop if you can, shit like that. The core of it is pretty solid.

Made some progress on Skeletal Dance Simulator a few days ago. Since almost every player fails the first rounds at the game I added a tutorial in the beginning, telling you how to play it.

I used Unity Analytics to get some feedback. Graph shows level completion rate of all players. Blue is without tutorial, red is with tutorial. The tutorials seemed to help, but it looks like level 3 is to hard for most players. After level 7 the curve plains out.

made bear traps faster to deploy, enabled a for-some-reason-disabled junk item feature, added way more item spawn points, increased the visible size of the hp/sprint bar, and the sprint pool by a lot (more than double, though I'm not sure it's enough still), and added a little completion bar to trap building/resetting/bandaging.

That is the exact same thing I ran into when I started learning.

I had all these big plans, Unreal Engine, Maya/Blender installed I felt ready I thought I was hot shit. 5 hours in I had a super boxxy model with no animations moving around a world generated by a blueprint using every blueprint for movement I had available to me. I realized I had a long way to go before I could learn UE4 and modelling so I started doing mods for other games I enjoyed playing. I'm gonna try out coding and level design once I'm confident in my ability to make basic shapes in Maya

That's not bad for your first 5 hours with an engine/no modeling experience.

But you're right. For every skill you need to learn it's going to take you a couple years to get decent at it. Programming, modeling, 2d art, etc.

Even if you didn't have much to say, just watching you play was very informative. There's a lot of things I didn't notice when I was playing myself and a lot of mechanics that weren't as obvious to newcomers as I thought they were.

I'm hoping to polish it up over the next week and have a better version for the next Demo Day. I'll definitely allow full screen next time, so I hope you get a chance to play it again more clearly.
