No really. Many gens did. Gen V spoiled us because they made them actual characters. And the only reason people remembers Gen I leaders is because of the anime and childhood nostalgia

I really hope we get back to Gen V levels of characterization again. It's nice to see gym leaders as actual characters rather than checkpoints before you blitz the league

I think it's partly because Sugimori's designs were more memorable. Ohmura is the one designing them now. (Ohmura did BW too, but as you said, they were actual characters).

Gen 3 for me. Half of them didn't even look like their type. There was a surfer dude who was something retarded like ghost or something. Then the rock gym leader literally looks like a generic route trainer. Actually most of them did

Gen IV stands out a lot compared to previous gens. Like:

Roark was the son of Byron.
You meet Gardenia in front of the chateau.
Maylene is the daughter of a gambler you meet in the city.
Barry tries to become Wake's apprentice and they chase after the Galactic grunt.
Fantina does contests and shit.
You meet Candice outside the temple.
You help Volkner get through his existential crisis.

Apart from that they've all got unique personality traits. And you can also meet them in the Villa and Battleground

I liked the fact that every gym leader in gen 5 had an actual job outside of leading the gym. Those three aren't my favorite gym leaders, but I like them a lot better than, say, Bugsy.

My favorite part about Pokestar Studios was Sabrina ending up as an actress. She was always one of the least developed Kanto gym leaders, so I'm glad they finally did something with her.

Pre HGSS Morty had the worst and blandest design of any gym leader.

I'm no fan of HGSS but one of the things it nailed was Morty's redesign. Nigga looked pimpin. Too bad his team was still lame as fuck.

I remember Byron's son was the first gym but not his name, and there was a Fighting gym but I cannot remember what the other one was, or what type it was
